Mommy Will Now Take Your Requests
July 19, 2010
Nate has recently started making song requests at nap time. He has a bunch of favorite songs and will tell Sharon which ones he wants to hear while they cuddle before nap time. Some of Nate's favorite songs to request are: "Cuggle" (Cuddle up a little closer), "Row" (Row, Row, Row your boat), "Star" (Twinkle, Twinkle), "Baseball" (Take me out to the ball game), "Hot Dog" (closing theme from Mickey Mouse Club House), "Key" (The Mickey Mouse Club song), and "Cow" (Old MacDonald, or Old Nate Bixby as we sing it). It is very cute. Although Mama Bee is a little insulted that most of the time when she sings for Nate, he stops her with an "All Dee." What can I say, the kid doesn't like off-key singing, and Mama Bee is tone deaf.

A Swim in the Pool is Really Cool
July 18, 2010
The first time we tried to take Nate to Nana and Papa's pool this summer he was hysterical. He didn't want to go anywhere near the water. We didn't blame him though it was still quite cold. But yesterday was really hot, and we had spent the whole afternoon outside at Ethan's birthday party. The mixture of more sun on the pool, lots of 90 degree days, and very little rain, meant that the pool was actually quite warm. We decided ahead of time that like it or not, Nate was getting in the pool. Sharon grabbed Nate and hopped right in the water, and after just a short protest, he started to really enjoy himself. His favorite thing to do was to jump off the steps on the count of three, or on "Ready, Set, Go!" He did it again and again and again. We were so happy that he got over his fear, and decided to go again today. Again he had a wonderful time. As a bonus we got to see Auntie Merry, Uncle Evan, Great Aunt Donna and Great Nana Bixby while we were there. All around it was a great visit. We hope to swim a lot more before the summer is over.

The Popsicle Monster
July 16, 2010
At the beginning of the summer Sharon bought a giant box of Flavor Ice popsicles (the ones that are in the plastic tubes). They have quickly become our favorite after dinner snack, and we have them most nights. Nate really loves them. This past week he hasn't got to eat many though. Nate has been basically refusing to eat his dinners. He'll look at it and say, "Nooo" and "All Dee" before he's even started. Then he'll push the plate back at us, or if that doesn't work he'll just throw it on the floor. We know that this is typical. But of course he can't have dessert if he doesn't eat his dinner. But he keeps pushing away his plate, and saying "Popple, Blue." We'll say "No, you didn't eat your dinner. First dinner then dessert." All he seems to hear is the no part, and then will request the "Popple, Red." I guess he thinks if he can't have the blue one, he'll settle for a red one. Poor little guy. He totally knows what he is doing though, and we're not going to give in. How'd this kid get so smart and cute?

Future All-Star
July 13, 2010
We haven't watched too much baseball lately, and were completely surprised to find out that the All-Star game was tonight. We decided that since Nate has been talking a lot about baseball lately that we would watch a little with him before bed. While watching the pre-game show Nate and Sharon were playing catch in the living room. Nate took an empty change purse that Jacqui left lying around and put it on one of his hand an started calling it his mitt. Where did he come up with this? We cracked up, of all things it was a Cinderella change purse and the little guy is running around calling it his mitt! We decided that we'll get a real mitt tomorrow for our future T-ball star. When the game started, Sharon and Nate shared some pretzels and watched the first 3 innings before Nate had to go to bed. Nate was very attentive and was pointing out all of the action using his words: bats, hats, balls, pitch, throw, hit, catch. He seems to have inherited Sharon's love of baseball! Now the only question is which team will he root for?

First Trip to the ER
July 11, 2010
Last night we made our first trip to the ER with Nate. But, don't worry he's fine, he just has a textbook case of croup.
Around 10:30pm Nate woke Sharon up. He was screaming for Mommy, and she knew that it was something wrong. When she went to get him his breathing sounded funny, and he had a terrible cough. He coughed so much he was throwing up all over the place. Sharon yelled down stairs to Jacqui, who was of course sound asleep on the couch, and she came up to find Sharon and Nate both in distress in the bathroom. Although not quite awake yet, Jacqui was able to take Sharon's directions and call the Pediatrician.
While we were waiting for a call back from the nurse, we took turns holding a very upset and scared Nate. We also stumbled upon croup in one of the toddler medical books at home. It sounded right on, because it came out of nowhere and Nate was definitely barking like a seal. When we heard back from the nurse she suggested running the hot shower in hopes that the steam would help Nate's cough. That didn't work, and when she called back to check in Nate's breathing sounded strained. We took the nurse's advice and rushed on over to the ER at UMass Memorial's University Campus. Nate was sounding a little better after being out in the cool night air (also a classic sign of croup), but was distressed and coughing again when he saw the triage nurse.
After a short wait in the pediatric waiting room, we were taken back to one of the pediatric ER rooms. Nate was immediately seen by a wonderful nurse and doctor (who did a pretty good Donald Duck impression). He was quickly given a dose of oral steroids and cool mist to help the cough. By the time we left, less than 2 hours later, Nate had eaten 2 popsicles and was sounding much better.
He gave us a pretty good scare, but he is definitely okay. And we are thankful for the wonderful nurses and doctors who put our minds at ease. Now we have one trip to the ER under our belt. We're sure it won't be the only trip, but hopefully there won't be many, and we survived the first. Great job being a brave boy Nate! Your moms are proud of you.
Check out this photo of Nate giving Mickey a check-up with his new doctor kit! We got it after the ER trip to help Nate be a little less afraid of doctors in the future.

Lights! Booms! and the 3rd Annual Reunion in VT
July 2-6, 2010
This 4th of July weekend we made our 3rd annual trip to Aunt Monique's in VT. We hadn't been back to VT since last 4th of July so we were very excited to be back, and of course excited to see Aunt Monique, Auntie Ro-Ro, Auntie Brenda, and Jessie. Monique had a busy weekend planned for us, and had even sent us an itinerary ahead of time. This was appreciated, especially by Sharon.
On Friday we went to a Montpelier Mountaineers' baseball game. Nate really had a great time. He was very interested in the game, and in Skip the mascot. He was very afraid to go near Skip, but enjoyed him from afar.
On Saturday morning Jessie had a tractor ride with Monique. There was a small incident with the tractor and the pond, but everything turned out ok. Nate didn't want to ride the tractor at all, which wasn't unexpected but was a little disappointing. Later, we went down to Montpelier for the Independence Day parade and festival. Nate really enjoyed the parade. There was a lot of things that Nate is interested in the parade: trucks, motorcycles, farm animals, tractors, music and dancing. The festival was also fun. We watched some circus performers and Jessie and Nate went in the bounce house twice. We stayed for the fireworks, and Nate really liked them. Sharon warned him that there would be lights and booms, and although he was a little nervous, he got close to his Auntie Brenda and watched the whole show.
On Sunday we had a picnic lunch at a pond. It was a little more crowded than we expected on the holiday, but we had great weather and a nice time. Nate was nervous to be near the water, but the rest of us waded in. Nate enjoyed taking walks up the road and picking up rocks. And Jessie got extra dirty making mud pies. We spotted some loons and frogs, but only Aunt Monique saw a turtle.
Jessie requested horse back riding as something special, so on Monday we all went to TNT Stables for horse back riding. Nate was scared to go on his pony ride, but Sharon and Aunt Monique walked with him and talke to him about what he was seeing, and by the end he had calmed down a little. When he got off he said goodbye to the horse and told us he would go again. Then Monique played with Nate while the rest of us took a trail ride. We had never been before, and were nervous but excited at the same time. We all got off to a rocky start when Lori's horse, Reno, kicked Sharon's horse, Chubbers, in the head. After that we had a good ride although Lori was a little nervous, and Reno went back and forth between running and stopping to eat. Jessie rode Ginger, Jacqui rode Charlie, and Brenda rode Boo. Jessie wants to go again next year. We all would like to go again too, but Lori refuses to ride Reno ever again. When we got back to the house we had some summer water fun in the yard with the kiddie pool and the sprinkler.
Our last day we had a few last tractor rides, and tried to fly a kite. Nate and Jessie played in the dog crates, which will now be known as "kid cages." We want to assure everyone that they both caged themselves on their own, so don't call CPS on us! Before we left we had to take our group photo of course. Can't wait for the 4th annual reunion!

Garages: The Good and the Very Bad
June 27, 2010
The Good: Nate loves the garage, all garages in fact. And really who can blame him. They are full of cool stuff like muh-mows, cars (well not ours, but usually), tools, and trash. Nate has been getting so excited about the garage lately. He wants to look in every time we go out to the car, so even if we don't need to go in we open it up so he can look in and point to all the cool stuff. He loves the garage so much that we decided to call our shed Nate's garage. He has his bubble mower, car, and his tool in there. He loves it.
The Very Bad: On Saturday, Jacqui took Nate out in the morning to go to the bank and run some other errands. She had her hands full on the way out the door, so she promised Nate that when they got home they would open the garage and look inside. When they got home she went to open the door and it got stuck. So she tried again, and with a big crash the whole garage door fell off the track! The top part was hanging down (it landed on Nate's picnic table), and the bottom got wedged in the door frame. Luckily, before opening the door Jacqui made Nate stand back, and thankfully no one got hurt. But we realize it could have been an awful accident. We had no idea what to do, but of course called our parents for advice. Jacqui's dad was nice enough to give up his Saturday afternoon to help us fix it. We ran through Plan A, Plan B, all the way to about Plan W before we had the door taken down, unassembled, reassembled with the help of Nana and Papa. Then we tried to open it again, and.....it fell off the track again! Luckily it didn't actually fall down though and Papa was able to guide it down so that we were left with a broken door, off the track, but the garage was closed up. We all decided that it was too much for us to try ourselves again, and much too dangerous. So, we will have a professional fix it. Hopefully it won't cost too much. But, we need to have it safe especially with Nate around.
Update: The door recently got fixed. We just needed to replace some pulleys and have the track tightened up, and a few other small things. Nate was very excited to see the repairman fixing his garage and using tools to fix it! It now works better than before, and we feel much safer.

Happy 1st Day of Summer
June 21, 2010
Happy Summer!
Today was a beautiful day and great start to the summer at our house. Sharon's work schedule changed and she will only be going in on Wednesdays for the summer. So today was one of the first Mondays in awhile that she and Nate didn't have to rush out the door.
They spent the morning playing in the yard. When Jacqui got home, we all played in the yard while Sharon grilled some chicken. We played with Nate's trucks in his sand box, with magnetic alphabet letters on doors to the shed (which will now be known as "Nate's Garage"), and also played with his surprise first day of summer gift: a pirate ship water table. We all had fun splashing in the table, and Sharon squirted Nate and Jacqui with the water cannon. This will be a great toy for the summer, allowing Nate to get just wet enough to cool down, but not as soaked as he'd get with his hose or sprinkler.
After dinner we all went to CoCo's Tropical Ice for Italian ices. Sharon and Nate shared a blue raspberry, and Jacqui had coconut ice mixed with chocolate soft-serve. Yum!
Lately, Nate has been obsessed with the garage and shed, so after dinner Sharon cleaned out the shed and removed the moldy carpet and gas can. Now Nate can freely go in and out of his "garage" to get his car, mower, ball and bubbles.
Here's to hoping for a nice, long, beautiful summer with great weather for backyard play!!!

Balls and Bats and Hats and Grandpas
June 20, 2010
Happy Fathers Day to all of Nate's Grandpas! Papa Bixby, Grampy Stein and Papa Marano!!!
Today we celebrated Father's Day with a trip to the PawSox with Nana, Papa, Auntie Merry and Uncle Evan. This was Nate's second trip to the PawSox (we all went last year around Father's Day). Last time we all took turns walking Nate back and forth on the concourse. None of us saw much of the game. This year Nate enjoyed himself much more. Eventhough the game started right at nap time, Nate was excited for baseball. As soon as he saw the field he said "baseball," and he commented on the bats and balls and hats. He moved from lap to lap thoughout the game, but actually watched some of the action. Unfortuantely, midway through the game it started thunder and lightning and pouring rain and the game went on rain delay. We didn't get a whole game in, but still had a lot of fun. While we were waiting for the rain to stop Nate had fun talking to his family about everything he saw, and he had fun feeling the wind and the mist on his hands. It was nice to see everyone, and we hope to see them again soon.
When we got home Nate was talking about calling his Grampy and Papa in NY, and he had a quick conversation with them on the speaker phone. We hope to get down there soon. Nate missed his Grampy and Papa this Father's Day.

Not Swimming at Nana and Papa's
June 19, 2010
Today Nana called to invite us over for a BBQ and swimming. She called while Jacqui was out mowing the lawn, so she jumped at the chance to go swimming. We thought that Nate would be excited too. He had seen the neighbors using their pool yesterday, and was interested, and this morning he told Jacqui that he wanted "pool" today. We were planning on just using the sprinkler when Jacqui was done mowing the lawn. Well, we packed up all of Nate's swim stuff and even his life jacket that he is terrified of, and went over to Nana and Papa's house. We thought Nate might be a little afraid, but he was not happy at all to be near the pool. He immediately wanted to go "innie" (inside the house). Jacqui and Nana were the only ones who really went in, and it was probably for the best, because it was FREEZING.
Nate sat for awhile with Sharon and Papa, and Papa gave him a tour of his shed and garage (garages are one of Nate's new fascinations). He really enjoyed that. And he did great at dinner, too.
Nate may take some time to warm up to swimming so we will have to take a few more trips over throughout the summer, and we will have to plan on going in the morning when the pool is in the sun. Hopefully, he will grow to enjoy being in the water, even if he never grows to love wearing his life jacket.

Laugh Until You Cry
June 17, 2010
Today we had a particularly fun time at dinner. Nate ate well enough to earn a Flavor Ice popsicle after dinner and of course ate the whole thing. When Sharon and Nate were done with their popsicles, Sharon tried to keep Nate entertained for a little bit, by blowing the popsicle wrapper at Nate. Nate thought that this was the absolute funniest thing ever, and laughed so hard that he had tears in his eyes. Sometimes it is just the little things that make your day, and this certainly made our day to see Nate laughing and smiling.

Happy 30th Birthday Mommy
June 14, 2010
Happy Birthday Mommy/Sharon!!! Today was Sharon's 30th birthday! Mommies both had to work today, but Jacqui snuck out a little early to get home and celebrate the big day. Before going out for dinner Jacqui gave Sharon her first present, which was a replacement for our hammock that broke last year. With some difficulty we got it set up and Sharon and Nate gave it a test swing. After that, we all went out for dinner at Outback Steakhouse, one of Sharon's favorites. We had a delicious dinner despite the fact that Nate was not on his best behavior. He threw a lot of stuff on the floor, but it could have been worse, and we still had a nice dinner. Afterwards, we went home for birthday cake and presents. Jacqui made Sharon one of her home made birthday cakes, and Nate helped blow out the candles. This year's creation was a Mickey Mouse Ears cake, in honor of the vacation we are all anxiously awaiting. Jacqui put 30 small Mickey heads on the side the cake. It was a low-key birthday, but still nice to spend it as a family.

Nate's First (Full Length) Movie
June 13, 2010
Nate had been dealing with a nasty cold all weekend, and was just not himself. We decided that Nate could have a special treat tonight and watch a movie.
We have tried movie and TV time a little already. He has watched a little bit of Finding Nemo, and a little bit of Cars. And there are a few shows on Playhouse Disney that he kind of sits for: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Handy Manny. He gets excited when they come on, but they never hold his attention for a full episode.
We expected the samething to happen tonight. Nate would watch a few minutes and then be climbing down off the couch to play with something or chase the cats. Well it may have just been that he wasn't feeling well, but Nate sat through the entire Toy Story movie. He was captivated. He spent the entire movie pointing out Buzz and Woody and Rex. It ended up being a great night spent on the couch as a family. We probably won't have movie nights too often with Nate, but tonight was really great. It's fun raising another little Disney/Pixar fan!

A Weekend in White Plains
June 11-13, 2010
This weekend we went down to visit Grammy and Grampy in White Plains. Even though we had been down a lot lately we wanted to visit Papa in the hospital again, and Lori, Brenda and Jessie were there and we wanted to see them.
We got down late Friday night, but Nate was excited to see everyone. We hadn't seen Brenda since February and Nate was very happy to have her fly him around the house. Nate was of course happy to see his cousin Jessie. And his Grammy and Grampy.
We had a little belated birthday celebration with Auntie Ro-Ro (Nate's new name for Lori), whose birthday was the 10th. We had some of the left over cake and gave her her presents. Nate had picked out a card for Lori all by himself. It had Mickey Mouse on it of course.
Papa was still in the hospital recovering from his surgery. He seems to be doing relatively well (if a little depressed) and has started his dialysis. Everyone made their trips to the hospital to visit with him. We even took Nate, and he did surprizingly well at the hospital. He seemed to put Papa in a good mood, and enjoyed looking out the hospital window with Grammy and Auntie Ro-Ro.
Nate had a lot of fun with Jessie this trip. They played at the park with Sharon, Dee and Peter. And one of the highlights of the trip was when Jessie decided to help Nate turn a cardboard box into a tractor for Nate. They spent a long time on the floor coloring the box, and it turned out really cool. Thanks for the great idea, Jessie. We didn't save the box and the next day Nate seemed to be looking for his "tractor."
Mommies and Aunties all got a little kid free time on Saturday night to celebrate Sharon and Lori's birthdays. Grammy and Grampy watched Nate and Jessie while the Moms all went out for pizza, dessert and an attempt at star gazing on a very overcast night. We even found a cool pirate themed playground in Mamaroneck that we plan on taking the kids to next visit.
It was a short visit, but we fit a lot in. We know that we will be seeing everyone soon for our big camping trip, and we will probably be down even sooner than that if we can find the time, because we would like to see Papa again when he is home and feeling better. Get well soon, Papa.

In A Word.....No
June 9, 2010
Thanks to Aunt Lori, ever since we've returned from our quick trip to White Plains, Nate has been all about "No". It's his new favorite thing and he uses it constantly whether he means it or not. Paired with his vigorous head shaking it's pretty convincing, even if he's actually still reaching for the cookie he just turned down.
Ahh, another new stage of toddlerhood.

Visiting Papa
June 3 - 5, 2010
Sharon and Nate took another quick trip down to White Plains to visit Papa now that he is out of the hospital. Nate missed him on our last trip, and was very excited to see him this time. As a bonus, he also got to see Auntie Lori who made the trip down too.
Nate had a very good visit. He loved seeing so much of Mimi & Grandpa who have been staying at Grammy & Grampy's house. Auntie "Ro-Ro" kept Nate laughing the whole trip bopping him around the house. Nate played outside in the yard, got soaking wet playing with the hose and washing the cars, and even squeezed in a trip to the playground with Auntie Lori & Grampy.
It was hard to say good-bye Saturday morning, but knowing we'll be heading back next weekend helped a lot.

Memorial Day Festivities
May 31, 2010
We continued our Memorial Day Weekend celebration by attending Auburn's Memorial Day parade. Nate got to see lots of veterans marching, lots of antique and classic cars, the town scout groups, the Shriners and their fancy go-carts, and several marching bands. We also got a special surprise when two fighter jets flew overhead. Nate that was particularly cool, and kept looking long after they were out of sight.
After the parade Auburn hosted a festival over at the library. There were lots of kid games, face painting, raffles, and a duck race fundraiser. Nate really got a kick out of watching all the little rubber duckies make their way down river.

"Track-tur" Show
May 30, 2010
Thanks to Aunt Merry Nate got to experience his first (and possibly not last) Antique Tractor Show out in Hadley, MA today. The local event showcased over 100 tractors, a petting zoo with baby farm animals, horse drawn wagon rides, and a trackless train ride featuring cow-cars pulled by a tractor. Needless to say, this was quite a fun day for Nate.
Nate got to try a little bit of everything. The petting zoo was a big hit, and although there were no sheep Nate still enjoyed petting the baby goats and bunnies. We also got to see some adorable piglets, chicks, and a calf. He checked out lots of the tractors, examining them up close and even sitting on a few (although he never lasted long). He took a wagon ride with Mommy, Nana, Merry & Evan and got to see some cows in the neighboring fields. Then he faced off against Auntie Merry & Uncle Evan in a duck race. But the true highlight of the trip had to be his cow ride with Auntie Merry.

Wet & Wild
May 25, 2010
Today was a very hot day here in Auburn and Sharon & Nate were looking for ways to beat the heat. Fortunately, Sharon had picked up a fun backyard sprinkler on a recent trip to Toys 'R Us and today seemed like just the day to break it out. Nate got slathered in sunscreen, dressed in his swim trunks and rash guard and headed out to the backyard. He wasn't quite sure what to make of the water fountain that seemed to sprout up in our backyard during naptime, but it wasn't long before he was brave enough to venture in. He had a blast running close, getting sprayed and then running back to give Sharon big, wet hugs. He was soaked through in no time but was so happy about it.

A Visit with Po-Po & Hwha-Hoo
May 21 - 23, 2010
Nate was so excited to be making another trip down to White Plains this weekend. He spent the days leading up to the trip talking about everyone he was going to be seeing - especially his favorite cousin Peter, or as Nate would say "Po-Po".
We packed a lot into our weekend visit. We went to visit the duck pond and Nate got to try to feed them through the fence. Unfortunately they stayed so far away that only Sharon could throw the bread far enough to reach them. We did find a very cool playground at the same park that we explored afterwards. We will definitely head back there on future trips, and hopefully with cousin Jessie along too.
We spent Sunday celebrating Auntie Angie's 80th birthday with the whole family. Nate loved running in and out of Douglas & Laura's house with various family members chasing after him. He tried steering the boys' golf cart, spotted frogs in the fountain with Ronnie, and went up and down the slide dozens of times running to hug Kelly after each descent.
Nate also got to meet his cousin Tiffany for the very first time. We had been practicing her name leading up to the trip and for some reason he keeps calling her "Hwha-hoo" which is Nate speak for "flower". The cousins spent a little time playing on the same blanket together, but Nate was more interested in playing with Tiffany's toys than actually playing with her. By the end of our visit he was pointing her way, saying "baby" and calling her name - "Wha-hoo". Hopefully the next time they get together they'll be ready to appreciate each other a little more.

Nate's Escape Hatch
May 16, 2010
We set up our tent today to air it out after it had been in the basement during our flood. Surprisingly it was still in good shape and we just rinsed it off a little. We are looking forward to trying camping again with Nate this year. He had fun playing in the tent this afternoon. He especially liked going in and out of the semi-circle hole in the side of the tent. He dove in and out until we dragged him in for dinner.

Baa, Baa Black (and White) Sheep
May 16, 2010
Whenever we ask Nate what we are going to do today, he always says "Baa!" Which means of couse that he wants to go to the zoo. Who knows why he thinks of sheep first when he thinks of the zoo and not elephants or monkeys or something, but it is always sheep. The petting zoo was one of our first stops at the zoo today. We thought that Nate was probably old enough now to get out of his stroller and to actually pet the animals. Nate had the time of his life petting his favorite zoo animal. He ran back and forth between the black sheep and the white sheep, petting them on their heads and backs. It was definitely his favorite part of today's zoo trip, followed closely by playing in the water fountain. Or as Nate would say "wha-woo."

2nd Annual Mother's Day Garden
May 15, 2010
Today we planted our second annual Mother's Day garden. While Jacqui mowed the lawn, Sharon and Nate weeded the flower bed. Then we all planted the flowers and Nate helped water them. He was very happy to be digging in the dirt and using the tools. He even wanted to wear gardening gloves. It is great to get to include him in the things we do around the yard. He really seems to like to be outside and he loves to help. Appropriately, Nate has recently started saying "flower" (which in Nate-speak sounds something like "hwha-hoo"), and we got to hear it a lot today.

Happy 1 1/2 Birthday, Nate!
May 13, 2010
Today was Nate's 1 1/2 year birthday, and we celebrated with one of Nate's favorite snacks: "cuh-cays!" It is hard to believe that our little guy is 18 months old now, but he truly is a toddler, and looks like a little boy now, not a baby. He is running and talking and so much fun. He can tell us what he wants, and we can almost have a conversation with him. He loves to dance, and to make us laugh. This really is a great age! Happy Birthday, Nathaniel!

Happy Mothers' Day
May 9, 2010
We had a nice Mother's Day with Nate today. Nate learned to say "waffles" today, when he and Jacqui served waffles in bed to Sharon for breakfast. In the afternoon we went to the park, and we finished our day with a trip to Friendly's for dinner and ice cream. Thanks for a Happy Mother's Day Nate!!!!

Nate's First Popsicle
May 2, 2010
We had yet another beautiful day today and spent a lot of time out in the yard. We played in the sand table, blew bubbles, played with the hose, and ate popsicles on the back hill. Nate enjoyed his first strawberry popsicle and had the sticky red face and hands afterwards to prove it.

Happy 60th Birthday Grrrram-pee!
April 24, 2010
Today we celebrated Grampy's 60th birthday with a party at Sharon's Aunt Linda's house. We had a great time visiting with Aunt Linda, Uncle Dave, Aunt Pam, and Uncle Jim, and Mike and Andrea and all the rest of the family. Nate had fun playing on the slide and with the toys that Aunt Linda pulled out for him and he like looking at the various cars, trucks and tractors that Uncle Dave has. He learned to say "tractor" which he repeated over and over again as he watched the neighbor drive his ride on mower. Grampy seemed to have fun visiting with his family that he doesn't see often. Our family and Aunt Lori's family gave Grampy a pair of camping chairs and a promise for us all to go camping and fishing with him and Grammy this summer. We are all looking forward to spending a long weekend camping together later this summer.

Buffalo Zoo
April 23, 2010
Jacqui didn't remember, but the Buffalo Zoo was just down the street from Lori's first Buffalo apartment. We had never been before, but our Roger Williams Zoo membership gave us 1/2 price admission at the Buffalo Zoo. We all decided to go so that we could spend the day together doing something fun. The zoo was very nice and they had great animals: polar bears, lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes. Nate had fun walking around with Aunt Lori and his grandparents, and had fun playing in the dinosaur dig site with Jessie. We look forward to going back sometime.

Cousins
April 22, 2010
We went up to Buffalo to visit for Jessie and Grampy's birthdays. Jessie got a bedroom makeover for her present from her parents. She got a cool loft bed. She was excited to show us her new 11 year old room. Here she is with Nate up in her loft.

Warning - Construction Zone
April 15, 2010
Grammy and Grampy bought Nate a sand table and a set of construction vehicles for Easter. With all the nice weather, Sharon finally went out to get some play sand for the table, and Nate got to try it out for the first time outside today. He had fun driving his cars around and digging in the sand with the scoops and shovels and even his hands. We are looking forward to taking him to the beach later this summer to play in the sand.
|
|
"I'm Not Afraid Anymore!"
April 13, 2010
Nate is finally not afraid of play-doh. He and Sharon spent a nice afternoon rolling out dough, making snakes, and using all the accessories. Nate really liked getting to use the spaghetti maker and the scissors. We're hoping that he is getting over the sensory issues a little. Maybe we'll have to try Jell-O again soon....

Boo!
April 12, 2010
Nate has a new morning ritual. Every morning when he is in our bedroom while we are getting ready, he goes into the closet and hides. We have 4 sliding mirror doors, and Nate will get in the closet and slide the doors all around. You never know where he is going to pop out. He loves that it cracks us up, and each time he pops out he lets out the cutest little boo!

Two!
April 12, 2010
Sharon and Nate always count the stairs in the house when they go up and down, and Nate seems to have picked up on it. When he climbs up the steps on his ladder he says two on the second step. He doesn't have "one" yet, but he says "two" and sometimes something that sounds kind of like "three." He also "counts" things in his books. If we are looking at a book with lots of one thing on the page. If we ask him to count them. He points to them all one at a time. He doesn't say the numbers, but he seems to know that count means show me all of the dogs on the page for example.

Sticks and Stones
April 12, 2010
One of Nate's current obsessions is picking up sticks and rocks in the yard. He has a little green bucket that he collects rocks in. He loves to put them, in and take them out, and line them up, and then do it all over again. He also loves collecting all the sticks from in the grass and put them on our wood pile. He is collecting the kindling for our fire pit one stick at a time. We are really enjoying watching our boy explore his yard. He is so curious about everything out there from the trees, to the grass and rocks, and the birds (teet-teets) he hears in the trees.

Best Buddies
April 11, 2010
Sharon was at work today so Jacqui took Nate to Diane and Annette's house. Deb, Trish and Ethan were there, and we hadn't seen them in a long time. Ethan got so much bigger, and has started to crawl. The boys were extra cute together today. Nate had a great time visiting with some of his favorite people. We missed Sharon, but it was a great way to spend our day.

Happy Easter!
April 4, 2010
Nate had spent his first Easter in Buffalo at Lori's, but this year we traveled down to White Plains for Easter. We had been looking forward to Nate's second Easter, because he had been playing with the plastic eggs we had laying around the house as decorations. We were hoping that Nate would do some egg hunting. The Easter Bunny left Nate a nice basket filled with many of his favorite things. He got a Disney coloring book, Winnie the Pooh toys, a stuffed Pluto, and bunny shaped crackers. The Easter bunny hid lots of eggs for Nate and filled them with Nate's favorite bunny shaped cookies. Grammy helped Nate search the house for eggs, and he actually did a pretty good job of finding them. It was another nice visit, and Nate was happy to see his Grammy, Grampy, Mimi and Grandpa.

Happy April!
April 1, 2010
Nate is an outdoor boy. He wants to be outside as much as possible. He has been spending a lot of time on his new climber. Here he is at the wheel.

Nate's Playground
March 25, 2010
Sharon had been anxiously awaiting delivery of Nate's new climbing structure, and didn't even wait for Jacqui to get home to help assemble it. Nate was again very cooperative, and took a long nap. Sharon was able to get the climber together while he slept, and they went out for a first climb when he woke up. He ran right over to check it out, and was able to climb up the ladder with very little help. He was most excited about the steering wheel at the top (also one of his favorite things at the park), and put himself down the slide. It seems like it is perfect for him, and with spring right around the corner we are looking forward to a lot of time spent climbing and sliding in the backyard.

Surprise! A surprise visit in White Plains!
March 20, 2010
Ok, we weren't the surprise in White Plains, but we were surprised when we got to Grammy and Grampy's house when Lori and Jessie were there for a visit, too (unfortunately Brenda had to work)! We had extra nice weather for this trip and spend a day at the Kensico Dam park. There was a big field to run around in and a playground. Nate had a lot of fun with Grammy and Grampy running in the field. He was excited to see a helicopter overhead, and kept pointing and signing for more. Jessie did a great job of chasing Nate around on the busy playground. It is clear that these two cousins adore eachother, and we love to see them together. Thanks Lori and Jessie for the great surprise!

Cozy Coupe
March 18, 2010
Today while Nate was napping we assembled his new Cozy Coupe. Thankfully he took a relatively long nap today, because this was a tough assembly project. We are happy with the final product and Nate seems to be, too. He was very excited to see it when he came down from his nap, and we had to go out right away to test it out. He likes climbing in and out of his new car, but isn't at all interested in being pushed around or trying to make it go in the Fred Flintstone mode.

Another day at the Zoo
March 7, 2010
We took Nate to the Zoo again today, and we decided not to bring the stroller. He did a great job of running around and really enjoyed seeing all of his animal friends again. He took a couple of spills when he was running, and when we got home we realized that Nate got his first skinned knee. He wasn't upset when he fell, so we were surprised that he had a scrape. We're sure that we are in for many more skinned knees with an active boy like Nate.

Masterpiece, part 2
March 2, 2010
Here is Nate with his first attempts at a paint with water book. Sharon finally found one that you just have to put water on the page, no dipping into a color palette or anything complicated. Nate isn't a big fan of his smock, but he did a good job, and his beautiful painting of Spot the dog is now hanging in his playroom.

Masterpiece
February 27, 2010
Nate isn't too into art yet, but we have got him to sit down on a few occasions and make some scribbles. Here is one of his first masterpieces.

Finally!
February 25, 2010
I know. I know. It has been an eternity since we updated Nate's website. It has just been so busy around here. Nate keeps us so busy, and our spare time lately has been spent watching the Winter Olympics. But, finally we have update the blog entries. We have also completed the Favorite Photos of 2009 folder in the Photo Album Section. Also, check out Nate's growth on his growth chart. Sorry it had been so long. We'll try to do better!

Nate's 15 Month Well Visit
February 24, 2010
Today Sharon took Nate to his 15 month well visit with Dr. DeTora. Nate did a really good job waiting in the waiting room. He was of course watching the fish in the aquarium and checking out the other kids.
He did really well during his appointment, too. He got to stand on the scale all by himself, and was weighed in at 24 pounds. That was a little less than we expected, because he was 26 pounds when Sharon weighed him on the scale at home recently. He is at the 41st percentile for weight, at at 32 inches tall he is in the 74th percentile for height.
Dr. DeTora thought he seemed on track developmentally, so we have nothing to be concerned about. She even thought that he was on track with his speech, which we were watching since at his last appointment his only word was "cat."
Nate got two immunizations, one in each leg. And he got a new book at the end of his appointment. It is a really funny book about a dog named Hally Tosis who has really bad breath.
After his appointment he was a little cranky, and later in the evening he was limping. Jacqui was concerned about the limp, and called the doctor's office. They reassured her that his leg was probably just sore from the shot, and that there was nothing to worry about.
Nate's next appointment will be in 3 months, when he is 18 months old!

Photo Albums
February 23, 2010
One of Nate's favorite things to do is look at photo albums. Sharon made him his own album out of extra photos that we had around the house. He loves to look at pictures. He likes to look at pictures of himself. He will point to himself in a picture, and then point to himself. He also does this when he sees himself in the mirror. We like to have him look at photos of his family members and had him look at photos of Lori, Brenda and Jessie before we visisted them. He knows pretty much all of his family members, and can point to them if you ask him where they are. He points to everyone, but he especially likes to point out his Mamas, his Nana and his Pa(pa), because he can point and say their names too. He also has a special sound for Jessie, which is "cuh," which we think is because we call her cousin Jessie.

Baby Signs
February 24, 2010
Nate has learned a few new signs lately. His new ones are cup, sleep, and bath. He signs sleep when he is tired, and also whenever he sees a bed. Last night after dinner we asked Nate what it was time for and without prompting he signed "bath."

Lots to Say
February 22, 2010
Nate has been working on a few new words. He has mastered two very similar words: hat and hot.
When we were on our way home from Buffalo, we stopped to change Nate at a rest area. He was wearing a hat. When he saw himself in the mirror, he said "hat" very clearly. We thought it was a fluke, but when Sharon walked him into the gift shop he saw a display of Syracuse hats, and said hat again.
His other word is "hot." Sharon has been trying to teach Nate that the oven is hot. Whenever she is baking, she tells him that the oven is hot and he has to stay back. He Stands at a safe distance on the mat in front of the kitchen sink, and now he says "hot" while pointing at the oven. He has been very good about standing away from the oven when it is open, but now he thinks it is hot all of the time. He also thinks that the microwave and the toaster oven are hot all of the time. The other night at dinner we were having frozen pizza. Sharon must have made an off hand comment that the pizza was hot, but Nate heard her because even after the pizza was cool and on his plate. He kept saying "hot" and refused to eat it for a good long while. It is amazing to know that he is actually understanding it. He amazes us every day!

Up to New Tricks
February 20, 2010
Nate is in the middle of another explosion of skills. He is doing so many new things lately. One of his recent skills is doing puzzles. He finally figured them out. His favorite puzzle is one that Aunt Lori, Aunt Brenda and Jessie gave him for his birhtday. It has baby zoo animals on it, which he loves. It isn't an easy puzzle, but he seems to remember where the pieces go and loves to make the animal noises while he is working on it.
One of Nate's other new things is pointing. For awhile he was "pointing" using all of his fingers at the same time, but recently he started just using the one finger. He points at what he wants, and points at pictures in his books. He has gotten so good that in most of his books you can ask him where anything in the picture is and he will point to it. He knows a lot more words than you would think. If you ask him how many of something there is in a picture he will point to them all one at a time. He has been really liking looking at his Elmo book that is kind of like a "Where's Waldo?" for toddlers.
It has been a lot of fun helping Nate practice these new skills, and he seems so proud of himself when he completes a puzzle or finds something in a book.

Escape Artist
February 17, 2010
We recently had to have Papa come and install a gate at the top of our stairs. It was long overdue. We should have done it long ago. But better late than never. One of the things that really pushed us to get it installed was that Nate has figured out how to open doors. All of the doors in our house have levers for handles instead of handles that you turn, so Nate can easily open a door that isn't locked. He has been escaping from the bathroom and our bedroom when we have tried to contain him behind a closed door. Now that the gate is up, Nate has a little more free range of the upstairs. He can run up and down the hall, and play with the toys in his toy box at the top of the stairs. He also has been enjoying using his lawnmower in the hallway upstairs. We think he might think that he is vacuuming. Anyway, with such an active boy we are happy that he is now a little safer with that gate in place.

Waddle, Waddle, Waddle
February 14, 2010
We went out to Buffalo to visit Lori, Brenda and Jessie this weekend. Nate did fairly well in the car for such a long ride. We were happy to get to Lori's though. We had a lot of plans for our visit. The first night we were there we went to visit Sharon's cousin Mike and his wife Andrea at their new house. We had been wanting to see their house for a while, and we had a really nice visit with them. We ended up staying late, and Nate took a nap in Jacqui's arms at the table. They live really close to Lori now, so hopefully we will be seeing more of them.
The next day was Valentine's Day, and we spent it by visiting one of Nate and Jessie's favorite places: the Niagara Aquarium. We had visited in August while we were in Buffalo for Lori and Brenda's wedding, and Nate had really liked it. Jessie is a big fan of the penguins and wanted to visit them with her little cousin. We all had a good time. Jessie of course loved the penguins and Nate loved seeing everything. He was making his fish face the whole time. His favorite thing though was the sea lions. They were in a big tank in the center of the aquarium, and he loved seeing them swim by and do flips. He bolted toward the big tank on several occasions hoping to catch another glimpse of them.
Lori and Brenda scheduled a playdate for Nate on Monday with TJ, the son of one of Brenda's friends. Neither Nate or TJ has moved beyond parrallel play yet, and they didn't interact much, but we really liked Brenda's friend Angie a lot, and hopefully this was just the first of many playdates Nate will have with TJ over the years.
Monday night after Nate was asleep, the adults had a game night with some of Lori and Brenda's friends. It was nice to get to play some board games. We really enjoy it, but rarely have time any more.
We all had a wonderful visit with Aunt Lori, Aunt Brenda and Jessie. Nate really loves all three of them a lot. And Jessie is so good with him. She chased after him the whole weekend. We don't get to see them often enough, but hopefully we will see them in April for Grampy and Jessie's birthdays. Love you guys! Thanks for a great visit!

Just Doing a Little Research...
February 3, 2010
We have been planning on taking Nate to our favorite place on Earth (Walt Disney World, of course) some time in the fall before he turns 2. A little while ago, he found a Disney World advertisment featuring the Muppets in one of our parenting magazines. Sharon ripped it out for him to look at and he has been looking at it everyday. Today he was especially into it and spent a long time lounging on the couch researching his first Disney vacation.

Little Mr. Fix It
February 2, 2010
Nate has really enjoyed playing with the tool box that Ronnie gave him for his first Christmas. He always liked playing with the hammer and the saw, but didn't really have much interest in the screwdriver until tonight. Without any prompting, Nate took out his screwdriver and put the end right into the top of one of the toy screws! Nate's Mamas can't wait until he starts fixing stuff around the house. We have a lot that needs fixing!

Just Warming Up
January 31, 2010
Whenever we see Jacqui's Aunt Donna, she jokes that Nate never wants anything to do with her. It is true that he doesn't usually want to go to her. He tends to be a little slow to warm up to people, especially when he is in an unfamiliar place. Today we visited Great Nana Bixby at her apartment. Nate was shy at first, but he finally did a good job of sitting with Great Nana and Great Aunt Donna. Even if it took bribing with oyster crackers. In the end he had fun with Aunt Donna because she rough housed a little with him, and flipped him over a couple of times. Hopefully the next time he sees her, he will warm up a little faster.

Big Shoes to Fill
January 30, 2010
Nate really loves to stand at the front window and watch the cars go by. He usually stands on top of our shoes to get just a little bit taller. Today instead of standing on Momma Bee's shoes, Nate stood in her shoes.

J-E-L-L-Ew!
January 30, 2010
Momma Bee thought that a good activity for today would be making JELL-O Jigglers with Nate. What kid doesn't like getting a little Jiggley? Well, apparently Nate does not. He absolutely hated the JELL-O. He didn't want to touch it and he didn't want to eat it either. It will probably be a good long while before we try that again. Although Mommy and Momma Bee had fun cutting out JELL-O with cookie cutters.

Over the River and Through the Woods...
January 24, 2010
... To Grammy and Grampy's house we go!
On Friday, we went down to New York to visit with Grammy and Grampy. We hadn't visited since Christmas, so it was time. We had a nice drive down and Nate slept most of the way. When we got there, Mimi and Grandpa decided to come over, and Nate stayed up until almost 11pm visiting with everybody.
Nate was on particularly good behavior this weekend. He was happy to show off his animal noises and his sign language. And overall he was just in a good mood. This trip he was very good with the dog. He was very interested in her and spent most of the weekend barking at her, but he wasn't rough with her. Nate was very excited to explore the house and was of course interested in climbing the stairs and touching the fragile stuff in the livingroom, but luckily he didn't get into any trouble.
Nate was especially attached to his Grammy this weekend. He spent a lot of time in her arms and playing with her. He wanted lots of hugs from her, and shared his toys with her. He also got a special treat when Grammy came with him to the playground.
We just got home and are already looking forward to our next trip. Nate is, too. When we got home he was pointing at pictures of Grammy. We think he misses his family already.

Touch Your Nose
January 19, 2010
It seems like Nate is learning something new everyday. Now in addition to touching his head on command, he can touch his nose and touch his mouth. We think that we will work on touching ears and eyes next. Okay, we'll have to be careful with the eyes, we don't want him to poke himself in the eye!!!

Mail Call
January 18, 2010
Nate got a mailbox toy for Christmas this year, and it comes with a post card, a valentine and a birthday present. It is a great toy and Nate loves opening the mailbox, taking out the mail, opening the packages and removing the stamps. Sharon had the idea of putting some of his small stocking stuffers in the birthday package as a surprise for Nate. He has been getting a new small toy everyday, and it has been fun to see him get excited about the new toys. So far his favorite toy has been the small Pluto figurine. He carries it around all day, barking the whole time.

Roger Williams Park Zoo
January 16, 2010
We got a family membership to the Roger Williams Park Zoo in RI for Christmas. They are open year-round and we decided that we had better get as much use out of it as we can, and today was an unseasonably warm day so it was perfect for a trip to the zoo.
We were excited to visit a zoo with Nate again, especially since he has been all about animals lately. There were lots of animals to see even in the cold. We didn't have time to see them all, but what we did see Nate really seemed to love. He really enjoyed the harbor seals, the crowned crane and the elephants.
We waited a long time to see the elephants. They were supposed to be getting their baths indoors. While their space was getting cleaned, one of the elephants poked her trunk out from behind a door as if she was peeking at us. When they finally came out they were getting exercised and paraded in and out holding on to one another's tails with their trunks. Nate was so excited everytime they emerged, and so disappointed everytime they left. Unfortuately, we didn't get to watch their bath today. But, luckily we have the membership, so we'll see it one of these times.
Also, housed with the elephants were the giraffes. Nate learned that giraffes were tall, and when asked how tall giraffes are he now raises his arms over his head.
Nate really liked the petting zoo, too. He was in the stroller, and didn't pet any of the animals, but he liked to get to try out his animal sounds: moo, baa, and neigh.
The funniest thing was what Nate's real favorite part of the zoo was. And it wasn't an animal! Right at the zoo entrance there was a row of Coke machines that had pictures of animals on it. Three of them had lions on them. Lions are one of Nate's new favorite animals because he has just started to make a pseudo-roaring sound. We think is sounds more like he has something caught in his throat, but he is really trying. Well, as soon as Nate saw those lions he started "roaring." Then when we tried to walk him toward the zebras, he kept turning around and running back toward the lions. For the next couple of exhibits he continued to try to make a run for the lions. Eventually we did get him to temporarily forget about the lions and enjoy the rest of the zoo. And, of course, he got to say goodbye and roar at the lions on the way out of the zoo.
We are looking forward to many more trips to the zoo over the next year, and look forward to see which exhibits will become Nate's favorites.

Touchdown!!!
January 10, 2010
Today was a Patriots' playoff game so we were making our usual trip to Diane and Annette's to watch the game. While we were getting ready we were playing with Nate and encouraging him to reach his arms over his head when we shouted, "Touchdown!" We have been working on this since the pre-season and he hadn't done it yet. Well he finally got it today. He did it several times before we left for our friends' house, and then he showed off for them once we were there. Unfortunately, the other team made more touchdowns than the Pats did and it was the last Pats game of the season. Looks like Nate learned his new trick just in time!

Nate's First (Real) Haircut
January 9, 2010
Jacqui has been giving Nate little trims here and there, and it had been looking good. But she really has no idea how to cut hair, and now that Nate has so much of it he was starting to get a little too shaggy. We decided that it was time to bite the bullet and take him for his first real haircut. We love his long, whispy hair and were a little afraid that it would end up too short, but somthing had to be done.
We decided to take him to Snip-Its in Millbury, on the recommendations of many moms at the Y. We walked in and they said they could take Nate right away. Unfortunately, we got a very unfriendly hairdresser, and Nate started screaming as soon as he was put in the chair. Although she wasn't friendly, she did work quick, and Nate's hair was done in just a few minutes. He looked so handsome with his new cut, and we were proud of him even though he cried. It doesn't look much different, it is just neater and layered a bit. He got a package of crayons as a prize, and a certificate for his first haircut with some of the trimmings on it.
We are so proud of our big boy. We all decided to go out to dinner at Red Robin to celebrate Nate's first haircut, and Nate even got to order off the kids' menu for the first time. He ordered Mac 'n' Cheese with cantaloupe, and did a really good job of eating. He even did a good job of not dropping too much.
Congratulations, Nate! We promise not to take you for another haircut too soon.

Milk and Cookies
January 6, 2010
Nate and Sharon have been hard at work with their sign language, and today Nate learned a new sign: cookies. He has his own modified, one handed way to sign it, and it is so cute. With his expanding sign language vocabulary, he can now make sentences. He keeps asking for "more milk and cookies!"

One Man Band
January 6, 2010
Sharon had a coupon to use at our favorite toy/game store, so she decided to pick something up for Nate. He has been so into music lately, so she decided the best thing to get was a band-in-a-box. It came with cymbals, maracas, a clacker, a triangle, and a tambourine. Nate's favorite one was definitely the triangle. It just makes a really nice sound. He wanted us to get in on the fun too and distributed instruments to us so we could all play. We are looking forward to many more jam sessions with Nate.

3, 2, 1, Blast-off!
January 3, 2010
Nate and Sharon have been taking many trips into outer space lately courtesy of the rocketship that Santa brought for Nate. He loves when we shake it like it is blasting off. He also likes just hiding in it. Here is a photo of Sharon and Nate preparing for take-off!

Nate has been lounging in his reading corner a lot lately. He looks as comfy as can be here with his teddy and his Mickey Mouse!

Stacking Blocks
January 3, 2010
Sometime months ago we had read that Nate might be at the age when he could start stacking blocks. We have been gently trying to encourage block towers for a very long time, and Nate has had no interest in doing much more than knocking stacks of blocks to the ground. Well he finally seems to have the motivation/coordination to make block towers, and today he made a fairly tall one before knocking in down. We were so excited and proud for Nate to acquire this new skill. Sharon can't wait for Nate to graduate to Legos, but that is many years away.

Nate Loves Sledding
January 2, 2010
We have been anxious for Nate to try the sled that he got for Christmas from Mimi and Grandpa. We got more snow again today, so Momma Bee decided to put Nate's sled together so that Mommy could take Nate sledding. It took awhile to assemble, but it looked great all put together.
As soon as Nate saw it assembled he got excited. He climbed right in even before we had taken it outside. Somehow he knew he was supposed to sit in it. Once we all got suited up and went outside we got Nate right in the sled to try it out. Sharon pulled Nate all over the yard. He was so happy. Everytime she stopped he would sign "more," so we knew he was having fun. He really wanted to go fast, and insisted on Sharon running around the yard pulling the sled. He got even more excited when she pulled him down the hill in the front yard.
Our boy definitely has a need for speed!

I Can't Put My Arms Down!
December 31, 2009
Happy New Year's Eve!
For some reason it seems that either Jacqui or Sharon gets sick every year around Christmas time. Well this year it was Jacqui's turn. She got a nasty stomach bug, and had to go to the emergency room today for IV fluids because she was getting dehydrated. We decided to have Nana drive her so that Nate wouldn't have to be exposed to the germs at the hospital. She felt much better after her ER visit and will be 100% in no time.
While Jacqui was gone, Sharon got Nate suited up in his brand new snowsuit. He looked adorable, and was so cute stomping around in the snow. He liked it so much that he seemed to fall down on purpose. And while on the ground he would take a few tastes of snow. Sharon can't wait to take him out again, and hopefully try his new sled soon. You can tell how much fun he was having from the smile on his face in this photo.

He's Exceptional
December 28, 2009
We forgot to take this photo before Jessie had to head back home, so we'll have to take another next time Nate and Jessie are both in White Plains. This was Grammy and Grampy's gift from Great Aunt Monique.

Little Drummer Boy
December 26, 2009
Aunt Lori got Beatles Rock Band for Christmas and everyone spent a lot of time playing with it while we were in White Plains. We have both been saying for a long time that Nate seems to have some rhythm, and Aunt Lori let him test it out on the drums. He got a real kick out of using the drum sticks. Sharon wouldn't be disappointed if Nate followed in her footsteps and became a drummer. He seems to enjoy music so much, it will be interesting to see if he tries to learn an instrument when he gets older.

Christmas in White Plains
December 25, 2009
We zipped down to White Plains fairly quickly because there wasn't much traffic on Christmas Day. We were excited to see everyone because we hadn't seen them since Nate's birthday party, and he has been changing so fast.
We arrived in time for Christmas dinner and had a nice meal with everyone. After dinner we exchanged presents with everyone. By now Nate is getting really good at unwrapping presents, and he had a lot to open! Nate made out very well. He got some really terrific gifts. He got blocks, bath toys, a camera, a sled, a fire station, a baseball tee, and a NY Yankees cap to name a few.

Nate's 2nd Christmas
December 25, 2009
Merry Christmas, Nate!
Nate's Christmas morning got off to a rocky start. He didn't sleep well in the unfamiliar place, and Momma Bee ended up downstairs on the couch with him for much of the night. Things got much better though. We were trying to wait until after breakfast for Nate to see the tree, but he snuck a peek anyway, and we just had to let him go look. As soon as Sharon put him down he ran right for the tree, and the big Mickey Mouse and rocket ship that Santa left unwrapped for him.
Great Nana Bixby came over, and we all enjoyed a yummy breakfast of french toast and hash browns. After breakfast we opened presents. Nate was very lucky this year. He got lots of great stuff. In addition to the gifts from Santa, he got a lawn mower and blocks from Nana and Papa, and books and a dragon Beanie Baby from Auntie Merry and Uncle Evan. Mommy and Momma Bee also got some great gifts, and Nana and Great Nana really liked the calendars that we made for them with photos of Nate each month.
We all had a really great Christmas morning, but unfortunately had a long drive ahead of us so that we could make it to White Plains for Christmas dinner. We let Nate pack a couple of new toys, and hit the road for NY.

Twas the Night Before Christmas
December 24, 2009
We decided to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas morning at Nana and Papa's house. Auntie Merry was there, too (Evan was visiting his brother in Israel). We had a nice dinner with them - pasta and meatballs, which is Nate's favorite meal. Then Papa read "Twas the Night Before Christmas" before Nate set out cookies and milk for Santa. Momma Bee remembers Papa reading to her when she was little, and was happy to have Papa read to Nate this year. Of course we missed Sharon's family in NY. Not the 7 fishes so much, but the family for sure. But, it was a really nice night.

Cookie Delivery
December 23, 2009
Nate has been very busy in the kitchen. He helped us bake some cookies the other day, and he has been more than willing to taste test our cookie creations. Today we had another job for him. Sharon had made up a few bags of cookies for our neighbors, and she enlisted our little elf to to deliver them next door and across the street.

More Please!
December 22, 2009
We had grand plans of teaching Nate some baby sign language early on, but we hadn't been good about it. Sharon decided recently that Nate really needed to learn how to sign "more" because he has been getting so frustrated, particularly at mealtimes. She has been working on "more" with Nate the last few days, and today he has it down. He's being pretty demanding, but signing "more" is a lot better than screaming.

What is Mickey doing on my plate?
December 20, 2009
Nate (and Mommy) got a special treat for breakfast today. Momma Bee made special Mickey Mouse waffles. We're not sure that Nate recognized the Mickey face, but he thought they were delicious!

Meeting Santa
December 21, 2009
Momma Bee had in her head that she wanted to take Nate to meet Santa at the mall. She wanted to bring him last year, but Sharon talked her out of it. Well, with time running out, we decided that we would try to go tonight. We went down to the Auburn Mall and took our place at the end of the very long line. It took almost 2 hours to get to Santa, but Nate entertained himself by watching the kiddie train circle around Santa's Village and climbing on the mechanical ride-on cars. When we finally got up to Santa Nate cried when we put him on his lap, but we did get a picture of him smiling.

X-Mas at Diane and Annette's
December 19, 2009
Today we had a X-Mas get together at Diane and Annette's house. Ethan and his moms, and another friend Sue were there too. Nate was on really good behavior and we all had a great time.

Hi, Santa!
December 16, 2009
Ever since Nate met Santa at the Y, he has started to recognize Santa. We have a lot of Christmas decorations around, and Nate likes to check them all out. Whenever he finds a Santa he points at it and yells "CAT!" We have one particular Santa that he especially likes. Outside hanging from our porch we have a rope ladder decoration that has a snowman, elf, reindeer, and Santa climbing up it. Everytime Nate leaves the house or comes home, he walks over to the ladder and waves at the Santa. It is really cute. Even though we know that he doesn't understand, it is great to see him so excited about Christmas.

Simon Says
December 15, 2009
Nate might not have much to say yet, but he certainly understands a lot. He has been getting really good at following commands. He can touch his head, blow kisses, dance, and wave on command. Momma Bee does need to give Nate a break though; she's always trying to make him perform.

What Does Nate Say?
December 13, 2009
Tonight while Jacqui was giving Nate a bath they were playing with some of Nate's fish toys. Jacqui of course was making Nate do his fish face, by asking him what a fish says. She said, "What does a fish say?" Nate made his fish face. Then she asked, "What does a Nate say?" Without hesitation Nate said, "CAT!" Jacqui called Sharon into the bathroom to see if she could get him to do it again. He did, and then he laughed because we were laughing. He's too much fun right now. We love you Nate!
P.S. - Happy 13 Month Birthday!!

Bye-Bye Bottles
December 13, 2009
We are officially weaning Nate from bottles.Sharon is still nursing of course, but he really seems ready to give up his bottle. He had been messing around with the sippy cup, and spitting everything out, but lately he has been doing great with his cup. We are going to give him a cup all the time now. Bye-bye bottle!!!

Getting So Big
December 12, 2009
Just had to post this photo. We can't believe how big he is getting. He is growing up so fast. He has really been liking climbing into his chair all my himself.

More Winter Weather
December 9, 2009
It seems as though winter is sticking around here in New England. We woke up this morning with even more snow on the ground. Sharon bundled Nate up in lots of layers (think "A Christmas Story) and trekked outside to keep Jacqui company while she shoveled the driveway before work.
Nate wasn't quite sure how to react to the 5 inches of snow on the ground and the flakes still falling down. He tried walking around in the yard, but didn't make it too far too fast. He plopped down to do a little digging but quickly realized it was too cold. He slid himself down the hill in the yard on his belly, feet first and then screamed when he couldn't get back up. After trying lots of snowy pursuits, he finally found a way to enjoy the winter weather. Apparently Nate really loves toddling around the freshly shoveled driveway. Go figure!

Nana's Holiday Party
December 6, 2009
Today we went to Nana's house to visit with some family that Nate had not met yet. Nana had invited her brother and sisters and their families over for a get together since they all don't see each other much and no one had met Nate. It was really nice to see everyone again, and for Great Aunts Patty and Cathy to finally get to meet Nate. Nate was a little slow to warm up and wanted to be held much of the time. But, by then end of the night he was running around and wanting to be held by everyone. Nate also got to meet a new friend, Alex, a 2 1/2 year old boy. Hopefully they will be able to have a playdate in the future. Nana and her siblings are tentatively planning a BBQ for next summer, and we will be looking forward to seeing the family again.

Winter Wonderland
December 6, 2009
We awoke to a couple of inches of snow on the ground. It was really beautiful. Enough snow to cover the grass, but not enough to need to be shoveled. We played outside for a few minutes before we had to leave for Nana and Papa's house. Here is one of the cute photos we got of Nate playing in the snow.

Snow!
December 5, 2009
When we got home from the YMCA holiday party there was snow sticking on the ground at home. We lingered outside in the snow for awhile so Nate could enjoy this first real snowfall of the year. He seemed very intrigued by it all, and especially liked seeing Sharon's breath in the cold air. He kept trying to stick his hands in her mouth so see what it was and where it was coming from. We are really looking forward to actually getting to play in snow with Nate as we get more snow this winter.

YMCA Holiday Festival
December 5, 2009
Today we all went to the Holiday Festival at the YMCA. Unfortunately, Sharon had to work at the party so Jacqui and Nate were mostly on their own. Sharon was in charge of Snowman Games and the Christmas in Italy table. She had prepared a craft, and two batches of yummy struffoli for the Italy table. She didn't get many kids for the games, but the struffoli was a big hit.
While Sharon was working Jacqui and Nate checked out the tables for the other holidays. They learned about Diwali an Indian holiday, and about the feasts that Muslims celebrate in the fall. They made a crown for Nate to wear for Three Kings Day, and got Nate's name written in hieroglyphics at the Egypt table. The part that Nate liked the best was the music. Jacqui and Nate checked out a traditional Indian dance, a string quartet and a Christmas carol sing-along. Nate really enjoyed dancing to holiday music and shaking some jingle bells.
At the end of the party Santa made an appearance. Jacqui and Nate got in line to meet Santa. This was Nate's first time meeting him and we were a little nervous that Nate might be scared, but while they were in line Nate started waving at Santa, and when we got up to him Nate was fine and even shook Santa's hand. Nate didn't have to sit on Santa's lap (we assume because Santa didn't want to risk catching the flu when it is so close to his busiest night of the year) so Jacqui held him near Santa for the photo.

Mama?
December 4, 2009
We have been anxiously awaiting the day when Nate would say "mama." We would have figured that since he has two mommies, it would have happened already. We've been working on getting him to say it for awhile. Well, last night at dinner every time we said, "say Mama," Nate would say "Papa." Of course we had to call Jacqui's dad to tell him, and he thought it was pretty funny.
Today was our turn though. Nate finally said "mama," and said it a lot. We are so proud of him, and every time he says it in his sweet voice we get really excited. He seems to be making the association, and we don't think he is just mimicking us. A very happy day for us mommies!

Playing at the Park
December 3, 2009
Today was an unseasonably warm 70 degree day so Sharon decided to sneak in a trip to the playground with Nate. We hadn't been to the park since Nate has mastered his walking so Sharon was curious to see just what Nate would do.
When we got out of the car and Nate realized where he was, he immediately started to do his wiggle to get down maneuver. Sharon plopped him down on his feet and off he went. He ran over to the equipment and was scrambling to get himself up. He was all over everything climbing, sliding and swinging.
The highlight of Nate's trip was definitely the slide. He went down sitting up a few times while Sharon held on to him, but it wasn't long before he was exerting his independence and trying to do things by himself. So, Sharon had him try sliding down on his belly feet first. He couldn't get enough of it and after each trip down the slide he was doing all he could to get himself back up to do it again, smiling and laughing the whole time.

Cookie Thief
November 29, 2009
Today we were attempting to get a good picture of Nate for our Christmas card. Nate had been posing for a while, and he was getting a little bit disinterested so Sharon decided to try enticing him with some cookies. The cookies worked. Nate perked right up, and we were able to get a few good shots. Then, while we were distracted checking out the pictures on the camera Nate took full advantage. He grabbed the whole box of cookies and took off running. It took us a moment to realize what had happened, but when we caught up with him there was no denying the truth.

Tree Trimming
November 28, 2009
We're so excited for Nate to experience all the sights, sounds and smells of Christmas this year now that he'll be able to better appreciate them. We were very eager to get our Christmas tree up and decorated to get the holiday season started.
We put the tree up in the living room while Nate was taking his nap. He could hardly believe his eyes when he came back downstairs and found the bare tree standing there. We let Nate try to help hang up some ornaments, but mostly he enjoyed taking them all off the lower branches. He spotted a Mickey Mouse ornament as soon as it was put up, and was pointing and shouting at it repeatedly. Nate is also particularly fond of a felt snowman ornament that Nana had made a few years ago. He loves pulling it off the tree and carrying it around the house.

Happy Turkey Day!
November 26, 2009
Nate got his first taste of real Thanksgiving fare today. Like last year, we celebrated Thanksgiving at Nana and Papa's house. Unlike last year, Nate did not sleep through dinner, but instead sat with us all at the table in his high chair. We gave him an opportunity to try a little bit of everything, but he was most interested in stuffing, squash, cranberry sauce and cornbread. Nate enjoyed dinner and even took it as an opportunity to perfect his waving technique. He waved across the table to Great Nana Bixby throughout the meal.

I Can Do It Myself
November 25, 2009
Toddlerhood is supposed to be all about independence and Nate is certainly taking that to heart. Today at dinner he insisted on feeding himself with his own spoon. He's done a few bites here and there before, but tonight he was going to do it all by himself. It took a little while for him to get his aim figured out (and he ended up with a lot of green bean mush on his face), but he got himself in a pretty good groove by the end. It wasn't neat, and he didn't get it all in, but it was still a proud toddler moment.

Hide & Seek and Flashlight Games
November 23, 2009
It had been a long time since we tried to play hide and seek with Nate, but Nate was in a particularly fun mood tonight so we decided to give it a try. Nate and Momma Bee counted while Mommy did the hiding. Nate had a great time searching upstairs and down. He needed a little help staying on task, as he kept finding fun things to stop and do along the way. He managed to find Mommy hiding under a table, behind a door, and in the foyer. After Nate got bored with seeking, Sharon got out the flashlight and we sat in the playroom and Sharon shined the light on things around the room and identified them for Nate. He really seemed to enjoy it and we all did a lot of laughing tonight.

Crawl No More
November 19, 2009
Nate is getting much more confidant with his walking, and now he doesn't want to crawl anymore. Pretty much the only time Nate is crawling now is to get over to something to pull up on. And once he is up he is zipping all over the house. It's hard to believe that he wasn't even walking a few weeks ago, and now he doesn't want to stop. He actually spends more time just walking around than he does playing with his toys.

One Year Check-Up
November 18, 2009
Nate had his big one year check-up today with Dr. DeTora. She hadn't seen Nate in three months, and was so surprised to see how much he had grown, and how much older he looked. Nate did well being put through the paces of his examination. Nate measured 30 1/2 inches, landing him in the 72nd percentile for height. His weight came in at 22 1/2 pounds, the 46th percentile.Thankfully everything is looking good and Nate is right on pace with most of his milestones. Aside from the usual pokes and prods, Nate also received his Chicken Pox vaccine and the first of two H1N1 shots.
Dr. DeTora was very impressed with Nate's food repertoire and Sharon's report of how well Nate has been eating. As a result, Nate was given the go ahead to start trying a lot more foods, and whole milk too. Good thing he's got a molar coming in because he's going to need it for all his upcoming taste testing.

Nate's Corner
November 16, 2009
Nate has a new favorite spot in his playroom. He loves the corner between the table and his toy bins. Sometimes he plays hide and seek from there, sometimes he drags toys over there and barricades himself in, and sometimes he just sits there doing nothing in particular. He is so happy in that spot that we have caught several cute photos of him grinning there.

Nate's Party
November 14, 2009
Today we had Nate's big first birthday party. This was our first ever party in our house, and we had about 20 people coming. Sharon had been planning the details for several weeks and we pretty much knew what we had left to do to prepare, and luckily we had Lori, Brenda, Jessie and Monique to help us get things together.
Nate woke up from his nap just in time for his guests to start arriving, and he seemed to have a good time roaming around the first floor and visiting with everyone. We had a good time, too. It was nice to get to see and talk with our friends and family that we don't get to see often enough.
We didn't have a real theme for the party, but we did decide that the desserts would be based on Nate's two favorite books. We made frosted cut out cookies in the shapes of the animals form "Brown Bear, Brown Bear". The cake that Jacqui made was a red barn with animals from "Big Red Barn". Nate did a good job with his cake again today. He had fun playing with the cake and getting green frosting between his fingers.
Nate did really well during the party and didn't get cranky until after cake, when it was time to open presents. He didn't really sit still to unwrap his presents (a preview of Christmas morning?), but he got a lot of great gifts. Nate's family and friends were very generous and he got lots of great toys and clothes.
All in all is was a great day, and we were sad for it to be over and for our guests to be leaving. Thanks to everyone who made the trip and helped us celebrate Nate's first year!

Happy 1st Birthday Nate!
November 13, 2009
Today was Nate's first birthday. We got the celebration started early by tiptoeing into his room at midnight to catch him exactly at 12:01am, the time he was born. Thankfully, Nate was sleeping at 12:01, but it was nice to just look at him and remember meeting him for the first time one year ago.
It has been such an exciting year filled with so many firsts and surprises. Nate has been a wonderful baby, and so much fun for us right from the start. Every day has brought something new. He's been the best addition to our family, and we feel like the luckiest mommies in the world.
Tomorrow is Nate's big 1st birthday party, but we still wanted to celebrate today on his actual birthday. We had a house full for Nate's birthday dinner. Grammy, Grampy, Mimi, Grandpa, Aunt Lori, Aunt Brenda and Jessie all arrived today in time for one of Nate's favorite meals: baked ziti. Nate being the good little bambino that he is, ate a good helping of pasta, and even saved some room for the highway cake that Momma Bee made for him. He got to open a few gifts today. Mommy and Momma Bee gave him a Little People barn, and a magnetic farm. And Grammy and Grampy let him open up a gigantic bag of Mega Blocks.
It was a really good birthday and we were happy that Nate had so much family to share his birthday with. It seemed to go by a lot faster than the day he was born, and before we knew it Nate was in bed and we were decorating for tomorrow's big party.

One Foot in Front of the Other
November 8, 2009
It seems like Nate has really gotten the hang of walking over the last day or two. He's been doing much better stringing multiple steps together, and even catching his balance a bit better. Most importantly he's gotten much better at falling. Instead of lunging forward and falling on his face, Nate's realized that landing on his diapered tush makes for a much softer landing.

Handy Man
November 7, 2009
Papa stopped by today to help us with a few home repair projects. As usual, Nate was fascinated watching Papa. To get him in on the action, we took Nate's tool box out of the toy box. It was a total hit. He loved playing with the wrench and screwdriver, and took a particular interest in the little plastic saw - probably because it makes a really neat noise when he runs the serrated edge across anything. He's been carrying around his tools ever since, and has been working on a remodeling project in his playroom.

Pudding Painting
November 4, 2009
Sharon is eager for Nate to start doing some arts and crafts. Recently she happened upon a pudding painting idea that sounded like it could be right up Nate's alley given how much he's loved playing with his food lately. Sharon got some vanilla pudding, tinted it with food coloring and spooned some onto Nate's highchair tray. Much to her surprise, Nate just sat and looked at the pudding and showed no interest in touching it. Sharon demonstrated squishing and swirling the pudding paint around, and Nate eventually got his hands a little messy. He tasted the pudding, but he never really got into the whole painting thing. So, it seems as though we'll have to wait a bit longer before he's ready to get those creative juices flowing.

First Steps
November 1, 2009
Nate has been standing on his own pretty well lately, and we knew he was getting close to being ready to walk, but we thought it would be another few weeks before he was brave enough to give it a try. Well, we got a big surprise tonight when Nate decided to take his first steps.
Jacqui and Nate were hanging out in the playroom while Sharon was on the phone with Grammy. Jacqui decided to stand Nate up and see how long he could stand on his own. She put him down in front of her, and he took about a step and a half before falling into her arms. She screamed for Sharon to come. Sharon quickly got off the phone with Grammy telling her that she had to go because Nate was taking his first steps.
With lots of encouragement from his proud mommies Nate walk/fell back and forth between Mommy and Momma Bee. What started as a step or two, turned into an incredible 8 steps at once! He did especially good walking while holding onto his Mickey Mouse stuffed animal.
Nate's moms couldn't have been prouder. We were so excited for him, and he was so excited that we were excited. He knew he was making us proud. We were able to catch some of the first steps on video, so check it out in our home movies section.

Trick-or-Treat
October 31, 2009
Happy 1st Halloween! Mommy's little monster celebrated his first Halloween today with lots of fun and activity. We traveled to Westborough to visit Great Nana Bixby for some trick-or-treating, and got to see Nana & Papa too. Nate looked adorable in his furry blue monster costume, carrying his little trick-or-treat bucket. Nate didn't get any candy, but he did get a bag of oyster crackers (which he ate right away), and Nana gave him a 3-eyed monster trick-or-treat bucket filled with his favorite Gerber snack puffs and animal crackers. Yummy!
We had company for Halloween night. Diane & Annette, Deb & Trish, and Nate's best friend Ethan, all came by for dinner and to help us hand out candy. Nate & Ethan both got dressed in their costumes (Ethan was an adorable penguin), and we took a quick trick-or-treat trip across the street to see our neighbors.
It was an unusually warm Halloween night, and we all ended up staying out on the porch to greet all the nearly 200 trick-or-treaters. Nate had a great time watching all the kids coming and going, and stomping around the yard. At one point he even led Sharon down the path and driveway to go walk in the street like the big kids.

Mmmm... Crayola
October 28, 2009
Today Sharon decided to indulge Nate's creative side by breaking out his box of jumbo crayons. He got all settled in his highchair, paper taped down to the tray, crayons in hand. Sharon demonstrated how the crayons worked, and let Nate do his thing. We didn't get any coloring done, but Nate did discover that crayons don't taste so good.

The Great Pumpkin
October 27, 2009
In anticipation of Nate's first Halloween we broke out the carving tools and got working on our 3 pumpkins tonight. Jacqui did all the hard work, but Nate got his hands dirty reaching into his tiny pumpkin and scooping out a little pumpkin guts. He mimicked Sharon scraping out the pumpkin, and absolutely loved playing with all the mushy pumpkin innards, squishing them in his hands and flinging them from his high chair. He was having so much fun that he cried when we took the pumpkin away so Jacqui could actually carve it. In the end, Jacqui did a fabulous job carving a ghost, a cat and a furry monster into our three pumpkins and we can't wait to see them all lit up on Halloween night.

Toddler Gym
October 26, 2009
Every Monday morning Sharon teaches a Toddler Gym class at the Y. This session, Nate is old enough to join her in class and he participated for the first time this morning. Even though Nate is the youngest toddler in the class he did a pretty good job keeping up with the bigger kids. He scaled the mountain of mats, climbed the stairs and scurried down the ramps. He clapped his hands during the circle time songs, and even had a good bit of face time with some of the other kids. Sharon was so proud!

YMCA Halloween Party
October 24, 2009
Today we took Nate to a family Halloween party at the YMCA. He got all dressed up in his furry, blue monster costume and we checked out all the festivities. There were crafts to do and games to play. Even though Nate wasn't quite ready for most of the activities he loved looking at all the decorations and seeing all the kids dressed up in their costumes. According to Nate, everyone was dressed as a "CAT!". He saw a lot of his YMCA Child Watch babysitters and greeted them with big smiles. He even walked us over to Miss Shannon when he saw her from across the gym. It was great!
The last bit of the party was devoted to a costume parade for all the kids. Each age group got a chance to parade around and judges voted for the best costume. Sharon and Nate took their turn in the 0-2 year old age group and amazingly Nate won first prize! He received a big Halloween bucket full of temporary tattoos, a Halloween bib, a Trick-or-Treat shirt, and a teddy bear dressed as a witch.
We had such a good time at the party, and Nate really seemed to enjoy himself too. It's fun to watch him exploring and just soaking everything in. We can't wait until next year's party when Nate will be sure to enjoy it even more.

A New Lovey
October 23, 2009
We've been commenting lately that Nate hasn't found a lovey for himself. He's not particularly attached to any toy, blanket, or anything else for that matter. Well over the last few days that's started to change. He's gotten quite found of a stuffed Mickey Mouse that he found in his toy box. He's been holding on to him throughout the day, chewing on his nose and ears, and exclaiming "CAT!" and pointing when Mickey is out of reach.

Nate's Toaster Dance
October 15, 2009
Nate is still loving his Laugh & Learn Kitchen. Recently he discovered a fun little song the toaster plays when he pushes the toast down. It gets him dancing every time. Check out the video in Home Movies.

Tougas Farm
October 12, 2009
With Jacqui off for Columbus Day, and it being a beautiful crisp fall day, we decided to take Nate to a local farm to enjoy some classic fall activities. We wandered the pumpkin patch and found a perfect little pumpkin for Nate's upcoming First Halloween. Nate did a super job walking around holding his mommies hands and navigating over the roots, plants and pumpkins.
Nate loved seeing the tractors coming and going, and would stop dead in his tracks to watch every one of them pass us by. We decided to take him on a tractor ride out to the apple orchard and he really seemed to like it. We wandered the rows of trees and picked ourselves a peck of fresh apples. Nate got to taste one straight off the tree and couldn't get enough of it.
We finished off our trip to the farm with a tractor ride back to the farmhouse kitchen. We had some fresh cider and Nate got to try his first apple cider donut - one of Sharon's very favorite fall treats. A yummy way to end the day.

Reading for the Record
October 8, 2009
Today Jumpstart held their annual "Read for the Record" event to promote early literacy. The hope was to have a record breaking number of people reading "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" all on the same day. Schools and libraries all over the world participated, and so did we from the comfort of our living room couch. We curled up with Nate and his own very hungry caterpillar to do our part to break the record. It was a fun way to make our usual bedtime story a little more special.

Momma Bee's Birthday
October 7, 2009
Today Nate helped Jacqui celebrate her 29th Birthday -- her first birthday as a Momma. Sharon and Nate went shopping and made sure to have a few presents, balloons and a cake ready for the big day. Nate helped Jacqui open her cards and presents, and happily held onto her balloons for her. He wasn't quite singing "Happy Birthday" yet, but he did do some good clapping when Jacqui blew out her candles.

Playground Pro
October 6, 2009
We made a trip to our local playground today to give Nate a chance to burn off some energy. We hadn't been there in a while and we were curious to see how Nate would do. Well he didn't miss a beat. He was happy to stomp around and check everything out all over again. He used the swing, and the slide, and bounced on all the ride-ons. He crawled all over the equipment, and made short work of the steps that had once been such a challenge for him. It was great to see him climbing all over with such a big smile on his face. We were amazed at how well he did and how much easier things seemed to be for him all of a sudden. Our baby boy is getting so big!

Fall Weather
October 5, 2009
We've had a stretch of really nice fall weather and we've spent quite a bit of time outside in the yard. Nate loves feeling the wind in his face, and he opens his mouth to try to taste it. He watches the breeze blow the trees and leaves around, and stretches out to touch them. He loves crawling around in the grass and crunching through the leaves. He likes to collect the leaves and inspect them all with his hands and his mouth. Yuck! We love watching him experience everything for the first time with wide eyes and boundless curiosity.

Fixin' Up the Playroom
September 25-27, 2009
Sharon has been eager to get some work done on Nate's playroom. She's got tons of ideas swirling in her head about how to best maximize his small playroom space, and give Nate some fun new activities to try.
Well this weekend the playroom transformation begins. Before we can get to work with the fun stuff, we are patching up all the walls and giving the room a new paint job. We're hoping to really clean it up and make it a happier place for us all to be spending our time. Look for some pictures of our new space over the next little bit.

Good Brushing
September 20, 2009
Nate's got eight big, strong teeth now, and it's made us very reluctant to stick our fingers in his mouth to brush his teeth for him. So, today he got his very own toddler toothbrush. He gave it a good inspection out of the package, and chomped down on it a few times. He got used to it right away, and didn't resist much at all. Good thing, because we want to keep those little chompers sparkly clean.

Way Behind
October 13, 2009
OK, so it's pretty obvious that we are WAY behind with our journal entries lately. Nate's been doing plenty to keep us busy, but we haven't been able to make the time to write it all down. We're going to do our best to play catch up over the next little bit and get things back on track. Stay tuned

Boogers
September 18, 2009
For the last few days Nate has been battling another cold. Fortunately it's only been a runny nose and restless sleep. No fever or coughing. It's made for some tough nights for us moms, but hopefully he'll be feeling better again soon.

Sweet Pea Playgroup
September 15, 2009
Sharon and Nate tried out a new playgroup today at the YMCA and it seems like a great fit for Nate. It's just for toddlers 9 months to 2 years, and lets them romp and play in the indoor Nature Adventure Zone Playground (think McDonald's play area but way cooler and cleaner). There are mats to climb all over, balls, bean bags, slides (big and little) and of course the huge play structure. Nate had a blast checking everything out and trying to keep up with some of the older kids. He wanted to go everywhere they did, and he actually climbed up to the very top. So cool! We know where we're going to be every Tuesday morning.

New York State of Mind
September 11-13, 2009
We made another trip to White Plains this weekend to pay a visit to Grammy & Grampy, and Mimi & Grandpa. We got to see a lot of family this trip, and Nate even got some time with the guys when Douglas, Dee & Peter stopped by for the afternoon.
Nate had a great time romping around Grammy & Grampy's house, and climbing their stairs over and over again. He got his first taste of real NY pizza and sported his Yankee t-shirt in friendlier territory. Nate even got some driving practice with the new ride-on toy that Grammy & Grampy picked out for him.
We took a quick walk to explore the neighborhood playground with Grampy. Nate loved climbing up the steps, gliding along the zipline, crawling across the bridge, and testing out all the slides with Jacqui & Grampy's help.

What's "In" Right Now
September 9, 2009
After months of working on the "in" concept, Nate finally caught on. Sharon was so excited when he figured it out by putting some of his bath toys back in their storage bin. Of course Sharon needed to test this new found skill. She proceeded to make Nate put his basketball in the hoop, put his fish in the fish bowl, and put the ball in the hole. Nate did it all successfully and it seems like "in" has finally clicked.

Bookworm
September 8, 2009
We have always made reading and storytime a priority with Nate and it seems to be paying off. He has definitely developed a love for books. Nate has been spending a lot of time in the book corner of his playroom flipping through his board books. He's even has found a few go-to favorites that he consistently pulls out of the piles, and flips through page by page. Lately he's most interested in "Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?", "Big Red Barn" and his Natural Baby "Eat" book.

Bucking Brontosaurus
September 6, 2009
While we were at Diane and Annette's house today, Nate took a ride on a ride-on dinosaur. We had no idea that he would actually be able to do it, but he loved it and spent quite awhile riding back and forth across the room.

The Great Playground Hunt
September 5, 2009
We have been all about playgrounds lately. Nate finally seems to be able to do enough stuff there, and is really starting to enjoy the swings and slides. We really like the playground near the house, but have dreams of finding an even bigger and better playground with lots of toddler activities for Nate to do. Sharon recently found a website that listed a few highly recommended playgrounds in the area. We decided that we would check out a few of them today.
We headed out to Sudbury, MA in search of one playground that sounded really good on the website. Well, after almost an hour in the car, we got there and it had a different name than what the website said, so we were a little confused. But it fit the description, and looked pretty cool. Unfortunately, there was no one playing to the playground. There were a lot of kids there, and a lot of parents with shovels, and a lot of caution tape all over the slides and climbing structures. It turns out that the parents were there sprucing up the playground and it was closed for the day. First major disappointment of the day!
Nate was starting to get a little restless, so it was good that we had directions to a second playground in Sudbury. We quickly drove to playground number two. This playground was open, but it wasn't anything special, and it had no shade so the slides were too hot to use. Nate spent about 2 minutes in a swing, and we decided to leave. Second major disappointment of the day! We had a little ice cream at a stand in Marlborough, before heading to playground number three.
We went to Dean Park in Shrewsbury, which Sharon and Jacqui had been to before. This park was much better. Nate had a good time climbing and sliding on the dinosaur slide, swinging on the swings, and sliding down a rolly slide. We put him in a sand box for a minute, but he didn't seem to like how the sand felt in his hands. But the highlight of the trip was the dancing fountains. There is a nice pond at the park that you can fish in, and at one end there is a large grouping of fountains that dance. Nate was completely mesmerized.
After all our running around we have decided that the best park for Nate right now is really the park near our house. It is too bad we had to spend so much time in the car to realize this.

Nate's First Word
September 4, 2009
As we just posted, Nate has been doing a lot of babbling lately. We have been predicting for awhile now that Nate's first word would be "cat" because he seems to love them so much, and already had his own sound for cat. Well today he finally said his first word, and as predicted it was "cat!"
It was another typical morning at our house. Jacqui had gone to get Nate out of his crib in the morning, and brought him back to bed so Sharon could feed him. The cats were kind of hovering around waiting for someone to feed them, and Nate was of course excited to see them. He was making his sound for cat, and Jacqui corrected him and said, "Cat!" Well Nate looked at her and said, "Cat!" Sharon and Jacqui looked at each other, both surprised that he had actually said it correctly. Obviously he was just mimicking, but that is the next step in talking, and it was a very exciting morning. Auntie Merry is especially proud.

2 More Teeth - That Makes 8
September 1, 2009
Tonight while sitting at the dinner table Momma Bee noticed that Nate had another tooth coming in, and upon closer inspection she notice that there were actually two more teeth coming in! That brings the total to 8 teeth, 4 on the top and 4 on the bottom. No wonder Nate has been cranky. That's a lot of teeth for us to brush! Good thing Nate likes his Elmo toothpaste.
The upside of the teeth is that Nate seems to be doing much better eating. The downside is that it really hurts when he bites. We don't have a good picture yet of all these new teeth, but hopefully they'll come though a little more soon and start to show up in photos.

Playdate with Ethan
September 1, 2009
Today Sharon and Nate went to visit Trish and Ethan at their house for the first time. They met Diane there in the afternoon, and had a nice time visiting and keeping Trish company while Deb was back at work. Nate got to see Ethan's cool nursery, and played with his dog Bailey. Nate was happy to give Trish a preview of all the baby proofing that they will need to do when Ethan starts getting moving. They had a nice visit and hope to do it again soon.

"Truck"
August 30, 2009
Today we went to see our friends Annette and Deb play in their championship softball game. Nate really seems to like going to the games because he really likes to be outside and he gets a lot of attention, especially from Diane. So we all donned our red shirts and headed out to the game to root for the red team. This was the last game of the season, and it was an exciting game, but unfortunately they lost.
One of their players was injured sliding into second base, and an ambulance had to be called. While everyone was worried about the player, Nate was watching the ambulance. This was very exciting for him, because he got to see an ambulance up close with the flashing lights on. Nate was mesmerized, and kept trying to say "truck." He was actually pretty close. Perhaps we have a paramedic in our future.

Chatty Beanie
August 28, 2009
Nate has been extra talkative lately. He had been making a lot of noises before, but now he is talking significantly more noises that seem to mean things to him. His favorite word of course is "cat." He had a very distinct sound that he saves just for when he sees Bailey and Nemo. He also has a "Muh" sound that he makes when he wants more water from Sharon's glass. And he has a "dat" type sound when he gets excited and wants something. He really uses his voice a lot now when he wants to tell us something. He has also been trying to mimic us a lot, which has been a lot of fun.
The other thing he has been doing is getting vocal when he is angry. Lately he has been very cranky, which we think is due to teething. Every night after dinner he seems particularly cranky, and he will get angry and say, "rah, rah, rah, Rah, Rah, RAH!" It is so cute it is hard not to laugh at him, but he really is mad, so we take it as a sign that we need to start getting ready for bed.

Spaghetti & Meatballs
August 27, 2009
Today Nate had his first taste of pasta and meatballs, and our little Italian bambino loved every bite of it! He is getting so much better at chewing and eating things on his own, and we try to give him something off our plates every night. Today we had shells and meatballs, so Nate had to try some too. He loved it, and ate almost half a meatball by himself. He may have to put in a request for one of Mimi's meatballs during his next trip to White Plains.

Playground Kids
August 27, 2009
Today was a nice day, and Sharon decided to take Nate to one of the playgrounds near our house. It is a pretty good playground behind the ice rink in town. While there, Nate saw his friend from the library, Brady, and his grandmother. He also met a new friend Olivia. He had a wonderful time crawling around in the wood chips and swinging in the toddler swing. He climbed up on the jungle gym, and took a few trips down the slide, with Sharon's help of course!

Back at Home
August 19, 2009
After traveling for the weekend Nate definitely was off his routine for a few too many days. As a result he's been having a bit of a tough time back at home. While we were away he caught a nasty cold, and that certainly isn't helping out attempts to get back on schedule either. He's having trouble breathing and sleeping through the night, and has been a bit extra cranky as a result. Hopefully Nate will start feeling better soon and things will be back to normal before too long. In the meantime it's sleepless nights and exhausting days for everyone.

Lori & Brenda's Wedding Weekend
August 13 - 17, 2009
Nate had an action packed weekend traveling to Buffalo and Niagara Falls for Aunt Lori & Aunt Brenda's wedding. Aside from doing a fantastic job serving as Lori & Brenda's ring bearer, Nate really enjoyed all the other fun stuff we managed to fit in to our trip. While we were there Nate visited the Aquarium of Niagara, became an international traveler by crossing the border to Canada three times, saw Niagara Falls, and visited the famous Anchor Bar - home of the original buffalo chicken wing. He visited with lots of family, got a ton of pictures taken of him, and had a great time.
There are far too many pictures to post here, so look for a full album of the weekend festivities on our Stein-Bixby Shutterfly Share Site at http://steinbixbyfamily.shutterfly.com

9-Month Check-Up
August 11, 2009
Nate had his 9-month well visit today. After waiting way too long and getting extra cranky Nate finally got to see Dr. DeTora. He measured in at 29 1/2 inches (around the 80th percentile) and 21 pounds (right about the 50th percentile). He seemed right on pace with his speech and motor development, and Dr. DeTora confirmed that he has 3 more teeth coming in. She also diagnosed Nate's rash as Eczema and prescribed him a new cream to help manage the flare-ups.
Nate also got his 3rd Hepatitis shot and got blood drawn to measure his lead and iron levels. He was a great bleeder, and despite the cute cartoon band-aids Nate ended up making a bloody mess of himself on the car ride to CVS for his medicine. He gave Sharon the scare of her life when she came around to get him out of the car and he was fast asleep and covered in blood from head to toe.
Nate will be back for another check-up in November when he hits the 12-month mark. Scary!

More Teeth
August 9, 2009
This morning Jacqui noticed that Nate is getting not one, but two more teeth. It looks as though he's got another tooth coming in on the bottom, and a first tooth coming in on the top too. I guess now when we brush his teeth we have a little extra scrubbing to do.

King of the Playground
August 8, 2009
Today we took Nate on a playground playdate with Ethan, Elana & Tetsu (and their respective grown-ups). Diane & Annette knew of a great playground near them that could quite possibly be the best playground Sharon has ever seen. There were tons of play structures and activities for kids of any age. It was great!
Nate and Jacqui got right into things. They tried a bouncy ride-on, tested out some of the many slides, and even sat and spun around in a cool tulip looking seat. He checked out the club house and played with some of the mounted toys. The best part by far though was his attempt at the mini rock wall. It was more like a sloped ramp with rock wall hand and foot holds, but it was pretty cool for a little guy like Nate. Of course he needed some help along the way, but he did crawl all the way up to meet Sharon at the summit.
Nate wasn't quite sure about a lot of the activities, but it was fun watching him try things out. He also really liked watching Tetsu and Elana run and climb all over the bigger kid equipment. Ethan was pretty content too, and although he wasn't climbing around he did try a little sliding with his moms. Quite an accomplishment for a 3 1/2 week old guy.
The playdate was a great way to spend a beautiful summer day, and the playground was a terrific find. It will definitely be a place we return to again and again as Nate gets bigger.

Yay for Cheerios!
August 6, 2009
Nate has been eating a lot more finger foods and has been working on his pincer grasp. He's slowly getting better at it, but often still ends up with Cheerios stuck in his palm. This morning at breakfast he was particularly focused and managed to get a lot more Cheerios in his mouth than usual. We were so happy for him, and he was certainly proud of himself. In fact, after each Cheerio made it to his mouth, he clapped for himself.

Stair Master
August 5, 2009
Nate is very intrigued by the stairs in our house. Probably because the cats spend so much time sitting on them and running up and down trying to evade Nate. For the last several days Nate's been crawling over to the stairs and trying desperately to get himself up onto the first step. Thankfully he's been completely unsuccessful. Unfortunately today was different. Not only did Nate make it up on the first step (with Sharon sitting right there of course), he actually scaled the entire flight of stairs. He did it completely on his own with one rest about halfway up. Sharon climbed step by step with him spotting his ascent with a hand on his tush. And what was his reward at the top of the stairs? A handful of fur off a very unsuspecting cat.

Piggly Wiggly
August 3, 2009
We read an article on one of those parenting websites about what kinds of foods and how much food babies should be eating at different ages. The article suggested that Nate should be eating significantly more cereal, fruits and veggies and also be trying meats and dairy by now. It also made it seem that he should be eating 2 or 3 solid food meals a day. He's nowhere near that, but we're not worried he's not getting enough of what he needs. Instead we kind of looked at it as a green light to offer him some more varied foods and give him more opportunities to eat solids throughout the day.
When Sharon first tried swapping some solid food meal times for typical nursing sessions Nate wanted nothing to do with it. He didn't eat much, and of course was hungry and looking to nurse again soon after. Today all that changed. He absolutely devoured everything Sharon put in front of him for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He enjoyed some Cheerios for breakfast with some fresh apple pieces. For lunch he ate half a banana and got to try some yogurt for the first time. He ate every spoonful that Sharon gave him. At dinner he tried some pieces of our chicken, some mashed potatoes and some baby food green beans.
All of a sudden this boy can eat!

Nate's Big Move
August 2, 2009
Last night Nate finally spent his first night in his own room. It was a very tough decision for us Moms to move him down the hall, but we knew it was time. It took a bit longer than usual to get him down to sleep for the night, and we probably checked on him twice as much as usual, but in the end he slept through the night with no trouble. When we heard him wake up over the baby monitor this morning, we couldn't wait to scoop him up out of his crib. Nate must have been anxiously waiting too, because he was standing up at the foot of the crib just waiting to see Momma Bee coming down the hallway.

Kid Party!
August 1, 2009
Today Nate attended Diane & Annette's famous Kid Party. He was one of the littler guys there, but that didn't stop him from trying out some of the fun activities. He tried the Bounce House with Annette, but was totally freaked out. He played in the grass, tried the kiddie slide, and splashed around in the kiddie pool.
We retreated into the house for a while and Nate got to hang out with the other babies at the party. He visited with Ethan again, and also got to play with Jackson, his buddy from his very first playdate. Nate and Jackson were good company for each other, and they sure noticed each other a lot more than they had back in January (when they were only 2 1/2 months old). They were both crawling all over the place and pulling up on everything. They shared and stole some toys from each other, but overall were on very good behavior.
The party was so much fun and we were so glad to give Nate another opportunity to do some new things and be around a bunch of other kids and babies too. We can't wait for next year's party when Nate will be running all over the yard and enjoying things that much more.

If You're Happy and You Know It
July 30, 2009
After lots of practice and Sharon's incessant singing of "If You're Happy and You Know It" and "Patty-Cake", Nate finally began clapping his hands by himself. He was smiling from ear-to-ear and you could just tell he was so proud of himself for finally figuring it out.

Backyard Swimming
July 28, 2009
Sharon brought out Nate's backyard wading pool today to help beat the heat. After a good bit of encouragement from Mom, Nate finally got in and got comfy. The last time he was in his own little pool he was barely sitting and it made it hard to fully enjoy it. Today Nate was completely independent. He splish-splashed around, went after his toys, and even climbed in and out of the pool by himself. He had a ball and Sharon loved watching every minute of it.

A New Mode of Transportation
July 27, 2009
Nate is doing so well with his commando crawling. He zips all around the house now, and you would think he would be content with his new found freedom and independent mobility. Not so. Nate in constantly moving, crawling, climbing and pulling up in new places and in different ways. He even did a little cruising for the first time today. However, he demonstrated another new mode of transportation tonight that might just be our new favorite. Check it out in the Home Movies section.

Nate's New Best Friend
July 26, 2009
Our friends Trish and Deb welcomed their son Ethan into the world last Wednesday. We are thrilled for them, and excited that Nate already has a friend of his own. The two boys had their first meeting today, and although Nate screamed at the sight of Ethan, and Ethan slept through their whole visit, we're sure they'll become fast friends and be great company for each other come football season.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game
July 26, 2009
We took Nate to his first baseball game today. We went to see the PawSox (the Red Sox's AAA affiliate) with Nana, Papa, Auntie Merry, and Uncle Evan as a Father's Day present for Papa.
It was a hot and humid day, and unfortunately our seats out in left field were right in the sun. Nate did better than we expected but was still a bit fussy. He tried to keep him entertained with his baseball rattle, and let him gnaw on a piece of Sharon's hot pretzel. We all took turns walking him down to the shady concourse, where he met Paws and Sox, the team mascots.
In the end the sun and the heat were just too much for him and we ended up leaving in the eighth inning before the PawSox won the game. It was still a good time, and we know we'll be back to try again next season.

Backyard Campout
July 25, 2009
We have been anxious to go camping since it's been so long, but we have our doubts about how Nate would do out on a campsite all day and night long. So, we decided to do a little test run out in the backyard today. We set up our tent, set out the lawn chairs and blankets, and got a campfire going in the fire pit. We spent the afternoon outside enjoying the sun and warm weather. Nate loved crawling around and playing inside the tent, and bouncing around in his ExerSaucer out in the fresh air. For dinner we roasted hot dogs on the fire, and we all shared some watermelon. Of course we had to have s'mores for dessert too. Even Nate tried a sticky bite. We really had a nice evening.
When it came time for bedtime, we got Nate all ready in the house (yes we cheated). We curled up around the fire until he drifted off to sleep and then tried to put him down in his Pack & Play that we set-up inside our tent. That didn't go so well. Nate was crying and screaming loud enough to disturb the whole neighborhood. It took a few extra tries to get him down, but eventually he seemed to settle in. Sharon & Jacqui spent a little more time enjoying the night air and beautiful crescent moon before turning in themselves.
Nate stayed asleep until 1:00, but then woke up screaming. Sharon snuggled him up in the sleeping bag for awhile and Nate drifted in and out of sleep for the next 2 1/2 hours but never really settled back in. He cried off and on, and just seemed uncomfortable. At 3:30 Sharon finally woke up Jacqui (yes, Momma Bee slept through it all) and convinced her it was time to pack it up. We schlepped the essentials back into the house and all made it back to sleep by around 4:00.
So, I guess we learned that as much as Nate loves being outside he's not quite ready for camping yet. I'm afraid Nate would have kept the whole campground up with him until the wee hours of the morning. Maybe we'll do the backyard thing again with tent, campfire and outdoor fun, but we'll stick to sleeping inside so everyone can sleep peacefully.

Nate's Pots & Pans Band
July 24, 2009
Nate showed off his musical talents today when Sharon dragged out some pots and pans to play with. He happily banged lids together, and beat on the bottom of the pots with spoons. At times it almost seemed that he had found some rhythm. He made quite a racket, and Sharon probably should have closed the windows to spare the neighbors.

Fresh Food
July 23, 2009
This week Sharon really stocked up on fresh produce when she went grocery shopping so we could put Nate's fresh food bag to use. All week he's been sampling all kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables. Apples, bananas, peaches, watermelon and carrots all found their way into Nate's bag this week and he loved every bite. He seems to really enjoy feeding himself, and it's amazing how much he can eat.

First Swim
July 19, 2009
The weekend weather has been less than stellar lately, so we hadn't had an opportunity to take Nate swimming over at Nana & Papa's house. Fortunately we lucked out with a sunny day today. So, after Nate took an unprecedented 3 hour nap, we made the trip over for a dip.
Nate donned his swimmy diapers and his cute little swim trunks for his first swim. He joined Jacqui in the water and applied a death-grip on her shoulders, crawling right up her body to get his little toes out of the water. He was a little unsure and afraid, but he did seem to relax after a little while. He liked splashing the water with his hands and feet, and loved when Sharon spun him around in the water. He even tried to doggy paddle at one point. He wasn't quite brave enough to try out his airplane floaty raft, but overall he did really well for a first attempt. Hopefully we'll have a few more sunny days to enjoy the pool again this summer.

Playroom Pandemonium
July 18, 2009
Nate has been loving his playroom lately and has been spending a lot of time in there playing with his new toys. Now that his crawling has improved he's started playing a lot more independently. He scoots himself over to one pile of toys, sits himself up and plays for a bit. Then he flops down, crawls clear across the room, and pulls something else off a shelf to play with. And, if at any time the doors on his pop-up farm are open, he insists on crawling over and shutting them all before moving on to something else. Every once in a while he even crawls over to check in with Sharon and pull himself up on her lap. Too funny!
It's really fun to watch Nate do so much on his own. He acts so deliberately now, and has started developing clear preferences for certain toys. He loves his piano / xylophone, his kitchen and his zoo from Aunt Lori. The only downside to all this play - the disastrous state of the playroom when he's done.

Just a Trim
July 16, 2009
Nate's bald spot and stripe are long gone, and with all his new hair coming in he's started to look a little shaggy. His hair has grown long in the back and has even started creeping down over his ears. He was long overdue for a bit of a trim. Tonight Jacqui seized an opportunity to give him a little snip while he sat playing on the floor in his room. She did a great job and Nate looks extra cute all cleaned up.

Nate's First Prescription
July 15, 2009
You may have noticed in the last several pictures that Nate has developed a bit of a rash on his face. Sharon had called the doctor about it last week and they suggested using some Eucerin cream in hopes of clearing it up. Well, after a week of slathering Nate with lotion, the rash wasn't really looking any better and at times seemed worse. So, Sharon called the doctor again today and this time brought Nate in for an appointment. It turns out he has impetigo and needs to be on antibiotics. Hopefully the medicine won't upset his system too much and his rash will clear up soon.

Good Morning Mommy
July 14, 2009
Nate is still sleeping in our room overnight, and he typically wakes Sharon up every morning with some babbling and occasionally a little crying mixed in. He's pretty good about letting us sleep, but when he's stuck in his crib with nowhere to go and nothing to do he makes his displeasure known. This morning, when Nate woke Sharon up and she looked over, she was surprised to find him sitting straight up in his crib. He was just sitting there happily babbling away as content as can be. This whole independent baby thing is great!

Long Time No See
July 12, 2009
It had been quite awhile since Nate got to visit with Great Nana Bixby. She had been in the hospital for awhile and then moved to a rehabilitation facility. Even though she still isn't back home, we all got to pay her a visit today on the grounds of her nursing home. Nate took a little while to warm-up (it's been months since he's seen Nana), but he showed off his commando crawling and ended up giving her some toothy smiles before our visit was over. We had a very nice visit and hopefully we won't have to wait so long to see Nana Bixby again.

Creeping Crawler
July 11, 2009
Nate has been so restless lately just bubbling over with energy. Today he put all of it to very good use. While we were visiting at Diane & Annette's house, Nate decided to try some real crawling out in the grass. It didn't last too long, but he got himself up on his hands and knees and took a few good crawls. It was so exciting and he looked so happy with himself. Not only that, but he also figured out how to get himself back into a sitting position after being on his tummy. Now he's lunging all over the place, crawling over to whatever it is that he wants, and then sitting himself back up to use it. So cool! He must have really tired himself out and burned a ton of calories because afterward he ate a whole banana in his new Fresh Food Feeder. Mmmm...

The Big Dipper
July 11, 2009
Today we happened on quite possibly the best local festival we could imagine. An all you can eat ice cream fundraiser at a local Worcester park. Needless to say we had to go check it out. The Big Dipper Ice Cream festival was awesome. They had 9 local ice cream shops scooping up samples of all kinds of different flavors. All you needed was a hand stamp and a spoon. They had music, carnival games, face painting and bounce houses. The park itself was really nice and the weather couldn't have been better. Both Sharon & Jacqui ate more than their $5 entrance fee worth of ice cream, and Nate got some tastes too. We're definitely putting The Big Dipper on the calendar for next year.

Off-Roading
July 10, 2009
Today Nate spent the day over at Nana & Papa' house and got to take a new toy for a spin. Nana bought Nate his very own Jeep Renegade walker and he took it for it's first test drive. He was a little unsure at first, but Jacqui was shocked to see how quickly he learned to maneuver himself around. He steered up and down the hallways and around the kitchen grinning from ear to ear.

Master Chef in the Making
July 9, 2009
Sharon and Nate made another trip to Toys 'R Us this morning, hoping to find a fun new activity table for Nate. They were completely disappointed with what they found - everything was boring, push-button, music playing plastic. After taking a few trips up and down the aisles, Sharon found the perfect toy - a Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Kitchen. She scooped it up right after getting Jacqui's go-ahead over the phone.
After getting it home and putting it together Sharon was even more impressed. It has doors to open and close, knobs to turn, a light switch to flip on and off, a sink with a drain to drop balls down and a faucet to turn on and off. And that's only some of the things to play with it. It's just great and has plenty more to do than just pushing buttons. It talks and play music to teach letters, numbers and opposites.
Nate was intrigued right away. Sharon demonstrated some of the things to play with and he watched carefully. He commando crawled over and pushed and pulled a few things. There's a lot going on and he'll figure things out little by little. Hopefully it will be a toy that will last awhile and he can grow with.

Paint with Water
July 8, 2009
Sharon has been eager to get Nate doing some arts & crafty activities during their days together, but has been a little anxious since everything Nate gets his hands on goes right in his mouth. Well today she found the perfect project in one of her parenting books -- painting with water. She set Nate up in his highchair with some colorful cardstock paper, a bowl of water, and a kids paintbrush. Then she just watched what would happen. Well Nate got right into things and had a blast. He splashed his hands in the water, made prints all over the paper and ate the paintbrush (oh well). He loved it and was smiling and laughing the whole time, giving Sharon that "you're really not going to take this away from me?" look. Definitely a project we will do again, and if it keeps going well fingerpaints won't be too far behind.

4th of July Weekend
July 3-5, 2009
Last year we traveled to Aunt Monique's up in Vermont for 4th of July Weekend. We had such a good time, that we decided to make it a new family tradition and returned this year with Nate in tow. Aunt Lori, Aunt Brenda, and Jessie made the trip too and it was great to see everyone since we hadn't been together since April.
Right from the start Nate was in a "look at me, look at me" kind of mood. He practiced walking around the living room with Jessie, helped open belated birthday presents, and showed off his new toys for everyone. He cleaned Monique's floors commando crawling around, and terrorized the dogs with his busy hands.
Saturday was a beautiful day (such a nice change from all the rain we've been getting in MA) and we spent the much of the morning outside. Nate got a trip down to the pond and watched as Jessie and his aunts hunted frogs. He didn't seem to notice them too much even when Aunt Lori brought a little one right up close. After frogging, we took some time to check out all of Aunt Anne's memorial plantings. They were beautiful, and Nate really enjoyed checking out all the flowers. We might just have a landscape architect in our midst. Although, by Saturday afternoon Nate might have changed career paths to librarian. While we all watched, he single-handedly removed books one-by-one from Monique's bookshelf, opened them as if to read each one, and piled them on the floor. Now all we need to do is get him to re-shelve them.
On Sunday Nate started his morning with his first taste of real Vermont maple syrup on some pancakes. Aunt Monique insisted he try the real thing, and since it's sweet he loved it of course. Monique, Sharon & Nate took a special trip to visit Monique's mom Dorrie in her new nursing home. Then we spent the rest of Sunday playing games and playing with Nate.
Although our 4th of July parade and fireworks plans got rained out, we had a great time getting to spend a full weekend of uninterrupted time together.

Toys 'R Us Shopping
June 30, 2009
Today Sharon & Nate took a trip to Toys 'R Us to do a little shopping. Granted, Nate has plenty of toys, but unfortunately he's outgrowing most of them. So, we thought we'd take a look and see if we could find some more age appropriate toys for him to try. You know, something he could play with, instead of just eat. We took our time checking out the many aisles of baby and toddler toys and Nate tested out a few. In the end we picked out 4 new toys to bring home and add to the playroom. It was a lot of fun, and Nate is already enjoying them, especially his tiger xylophone.

A Second Tooth
June 29, 2009
Just when we thought Nate was over his teething crankiness (at least for the time being), we were surprised to find another tooth popping up in his mouth. Jacqui discovered it when Nate bit her hand and left two little tooth prints side-by-side.

Out in the Woods
June 28, 2009
We've been itching to try camping with Nate, but we're a little unsure of how well he'll handle things. We've wanted to give it a try in the backyard but the never-ending rain has put a damper on our plans. Well today we were invited to go hang out with Diane & Annette, Deb & Trish at a campground they were staying at for the weekend. Nate slept through the first part of our visit, but woke up soon enough to join us around the campfire. As usual he was fascinated by everything around him, especially the trees and plants. He also got to meet and play with Bailey (Deb & Trish's dog). After hanging out for a bit and exploring the campground a little we all headed over to Kimball's for some ice cream. We plopped Nate right on the picnic table with everyone and he happily sampled a little ice cream. The whole afternoon was a lot of fun and made us want to get back camping again soon.

Independence Day Festivities
June 27, 2009
We all got dressed in our red, white and blue today to celebrate Auburn's Independence Day parade. Luckily, the parade passes by just a few blocks from our house, and we were able to get a prime viewing spot on a curb in the shade. The parade was lot of fun. We got to see police cars and fire trucks, as well as quite a few classic and antique cars. Local veterans, cub scouts, and politicians marched. The Shriner's had several different marching groups riding motorcycles, go carts and mini 18-wheelers. There was a band and even some clowns and puppeteers. It really was a cute local town parade and I'm sure that Nate will grow to love it more and more as the years go by.

Commando Crawling
June 23, 2009
Nate is on the move! All of a sudden he's figured out the whole commando crawl thing and is scurrying around the house. He had made a few inch-worm type moves before, but now he's really got the hang of it. Needless to say we're incredibly proud and impressed. Check out the video clip in Home Movies.

Library Storytime
June 22, 2009
This week starts Sharon & Nate's new summer schedule. The local Auburn Library offers a free storytime for the under two age group every Monday morning, so we decided to check it out. The program was exactly the kind of thing Sharon was looking to get Nate involved in. There were about 8 kids in the group and Nate was one of the youngest, but it didn't seem to matter at all. The librarian who ran the program was great about including everyone and picking appropriate activities. We started with a story, and then she led the group through some nursery rhymes and songs. Then at the end of class she put on some kids music and let all the kids dance around. Nate loved the whole thing, and even got into bouncing around to the music. We'll definitely be making the storytime a permanent part of our schedule from here on out, and we're even going to participate in the summer reading program just for fun.

Father's Day Weekend
June 20-21, 2009
Since we spent Mother's Day here at home with Jacqui's family, we decided it was only right to visit White Plains for Father's Day.
We had a very nice visit with everyone, and Nate seemed to be on very good behavior despite his teething. He got treated to his first taste of a donut at Mimi's urging, but ended up gagging on it, startling everyone. We all went out to dinner Saturday night and Nate sat contented through most of the meal. He even colored his kid's menu with some help from Momma-Bee.
On Sunday, we all enjoyed dinner together for Father's Day. Nate presented his gifts to Grampy and Grandpa and even helped open them.

Cutting a Tooth
June 19, 2009
It's official! Nate is cutting his first tooth. Sharon discovered it this morning as a hard, raised bump in his mouth. Fortunately she found it with her finger, and not through Nate biting her during a nursing session. After closer inspection we could definitely see the sharp white peak of a first tooth cutting through Nate's bottom gum.

Mmmm... Waffles
June 18, 2009
Only eating pureed baby food must get a little boring, so when it makes sense we've been giving Nate small bits of real food. This morning he got a chance to have a bit of our breakfast waffles. Not surprisingly he loved them. He actually ate more than we expected and was pretty good at gumming them to bits.

Sweet Stuff
June 17, 2009
Nate is continuing to work his way through the food rainbow and is still working on his orange foods. Today he got his first taste of sweet potatoes and they were a hit. Unfortunately most of it ended up on his face, and not in his mouth. It's not bad manners, he's just still learning.

Mom's Little Y-Bee
June 16, 2009
Sharon was at the YMCA again today for a training. Nate came along too, and got to go to the Child Watch room for the first time all by himself. It wasn't going to be long, but Sharon wasn't too sure how it was going to go. Lately Nate has started to develop a bit of separation anxiety and Sharon spent the whole training just waiting for a Child Watch staffer to come get her. Luckily she made it through without any interruptions, and when she went to pick up Nate he was happily playing on the floor. He got a glowing report from the staff and Sharon was so proud. Sharon starts teaching her regular classes at the Y next week, so it's quite a relief to know that Nate can do his own thing and have a good time too.

Ready or Not, Here We Come
June 15, 2009
Nate has been loving playing Peek-a-Boo, so today we took it one step further. We started playing Hide & Seek with him around the house. Sharon and Jacqui both took turns hiding, and helping Nate go seeking. He walked all over the house (with help of course) and got a real kick out of finally finding a mommy. Now if it ever stops raining around here we'll take the game outside too. It should be fun.

Mom's Birthday
June 14, 2009
Today we celebrated Sharon's 29th birthday. It was great to spend the day celebrating as a family of three for the very first time. We had a low-key kind of day since the weather was so crummy, but Jacqui made it special by making Sharon breakfast, dinner, and a special camping themed birthday cake. Nate had a great day and was in a particularly good mood. He spent a lot of time playing around with Sharon, getting horsey rides, and sliding around the floor on his blanket. When it came time to open presents, Nate was a big help and made short work of all the wrapping paper.

Trot, Trot to Boston
June 13, 2009
Nate made his first trip into Boston today. We went in to watch the Boston Pride Parade, but ended up making a day of it and enjoying the city. Nate took his first ride on the T and did super. He was content sitting on Sharon's lap the whole way and spent the trip looking out the window and checking out the other passengers.
We met Diane and Annette for the Pride festival and parade and found ourselves a good viewing spot (or so we thought). Unfortunately once the parade started a rush of people swarmed in to block our view. Nate couldn't care less, especially after he fell asleep in Diane's arms. After the parade we enjoyed a little of the festival and some music before going off to explore the city.
We took a walk over to Boston Common and strolled the park with Nate. We stopped by The Frog Pond, and stopped to listen to a concert in the park. Next we made our way over to the Public Garden and enjoyed the flowers and fountains. We brought Nate over to see the "Make Way for Ducklings" statues, and then to see the live ducks over by the swan boats. We had a very nice day and Nate seemed to really like being out in the park. We can't wait to take him back when he can appreciate it all that much more.

Spam
June 12, 2009
We have been getting a few spam messages on our guestbook page lately, so we have decided to approve the messages before they get posted. You will also have to type in one of those twisted words that appears on the screen (kind of like when you order tickets online). We hope this won't deter our friends and family from continuing to post messages for Nate, and we hope this will eliminate the spam. Thanks for bearing with us!!!

I'm Gonna Get You!
June 10, 2009
Nate is fascinated with Bailey and Nemo and is constantly reaching out to touch and grab them whenever they come within arm's reach. Now that Nate is so close to being mobile the cats are really in trouble. Of course Sharon isn't helping things. She takes Nate's hands to help him walk and they run around the house chasing the cats. Nate squeals and laughs hysterically, and the cats scurry in all directions until they can make a break for the basement stairs.

Bits and Pieces
June 8, 2009
Nate has been doing a bit better with eating his pureed baby food. We're working our way through the long list of new foods, checking off another fruit or vegetable every 3 days or so. He's getting better about eating off a spoon, but today we discovered that he is much more interested in eating bits of whatever is on our plate. He tried some carrots today cooked soft and cut up very small. He absolutely loved gobbling them up and we didn't get the tight lips face once.

New Sounds
June 7, 2009
Nate can be a talker when the mood strikes him, but has stuck to the vowel sounds so far. We've been reading about how he should be adding consonants to his repertoire for months, but it just hadn't happened yet. Today, while Nate was visiting with Nana & Papa something must have clicked. When we went back to pick him up, he was babbling mamamama, babababa, and dadadada. We could hardly believe it. He was so funny just talking away to himself the whole ride home.

First Licks
June 6, 2009
Sharon has had Friendly's Free Ice Cream Day up on the calendar for weeks, and we've been looking forward to going for a sweet treat. Today was finally the day. Both Sharon and Jacqui got their free cones, and Nate got his first lick of ice cream off Sharon's scoop of Cookies & Cream. He sure liked it and eagerly grabbed Sharon's cone for another taste.

Gymboree
June 5, 2009
As part of Sharon's Mother's Day present, Jacqui signed her and Nate up for a free class at the local Gymboree. Sharon had really been looking forward to it, and today was the day that she and Nate got to go check it out.
The class started with some sing-a-long songs and a quick puppet show. Next, the teacher set up some different activity areas around the room. There were mats to roll on, stairs to climb, balls to play with, and even some slides to try out. There wasn't any real instruction, so Sharon and Nate just did their own thing testing out each of the different pieces of equipment. The class was for babies 6 months and up, so Nate was definitely on the younger end of the spectrum. He did pretty well keeping up, but wasn't ready to use a lot of the equipment as intended. Good thing Sharon is creative, because she found a way to modify most things so Nate could use them.
After about 30 minutes of free play exploring the room, the class came back together again. We all played some parachute games and ended with some more songs and a shower of bubbles. That was probably the highlight for Nate-Bean.
All in all, Sharon left a little disappointed. She didn't really come away with any new activities for Nate, and wasn't too impressed with the teacher. There just wasn't enough instruction or guidance, especially for a class with new participants. Nate didn't really seem excited by anything he tried, and there was very little opportunity for interaction with the other babies. So, it doesn't look like that's the class for us. It was fun to check it out, but I think we're going to keep looking for something that would be a better fit for us.

A Much Better Day
June 4, 2009
Nate's really seemed to be having a lot of trouble with his routine lately. We really seemed to have had a good thing going, but once we started introducing Nate to solid foods, things seemed to come apart at the seams. Nate hasn't been going to sleep easily, or sleeping well overnight. His naps that were already few and far between have become non-existant. He's been refusing his solid foods (with last night as an exception), and not nursing particularly well either. Worst of all, he just hasn't seemed to be his usual happy self. We haven't been seeing nearly as many smiles or hearing as much laughter. It's just been tough.
Well today, things finally seemed to turn around. For starters, he slept through then night allowing everyone some much needed rest and recouperation. He was back on his typical nursing schedule and really seemed to enjoy our outing to the YMCA. We even managed to sneak in a nap this afternoon. He sat well in his high chair through our dinner, and even if he didn't eat much of his carrots and rice, he didn't have a meltdown over it either. He was in a great mood all day and it was contagious. He even got to bed on time tonight. Now that's the Nate we know and love. Good day buddy!

Checking Out Child Watch
June 4, 2009
Sharon and Nate took another trip to the YMCA today. Sharon wanted to observe the current soccer coach and see what the kids have been working on before she ends up taking over the class this summer. Nate came along too of course and brought his own soccer ball so he could play along. Sharon and Nate sat on the sidelines and Nate was glued to the action on the field. He watched the kids running around and tracked the ball when it came our way. It held his attention much longer than Sharon expected and was a lot of fun.
After class Sharon brought Nate over to the Child Watch room where he'll be spending his time while Sharon is teaching. They spent a bit of time playing together on the floor and checking out the toys. Nate must have taste tested a dozen of them. He seemed pretty comfortable with the staff and with the other babies. It was good to get a chance to feel things out and get Nate introduced to the place. We're planning on testing out a ilttle drop-off time the next time we visit. That will be the true test.

A Healthy Appetite
June 3, 2009
After over a week and a half of not really eating, Nate did a great job scarfing down his bananas tonight. He actually seemed to like them and hungrily devoured the whole bowl full. It was such a relief to see him eating again, and his whole mood seemed better after. Hopefully we've come to the turning point. We're keeping our fingers crossed.

Wedding Party Duds
June 2, 2009
Nate has been given the honor of serving in Aunt Lori & Aunt Brenda's summer wedding as their official ring bearer. We're not exactly sure just yet how a barely 9 month old Nate is going to perform his duties, but we do know he has to look good doing it.
Today Sharon and Nate went shopping for his wedding clothes and totally lucked out. We found the perfect little outfit. He's going to look great! We can't wait until August 15th for his ring bearer debut.

Joe Cool
June 1, 2009
We've been spending a lot of time outside with Nate and with the sun being so strong lately we decided it was time to pick up some cool shades to protect his eyes. We loved these sunglasses from Carter's with a little blue whale on each lense. Nate's not too sure how he feels about them yet. He hates them on his face, but loves chewing on the ear piece.

Bananas
May 31, 2009
Since Nate seems to have no interest in his apple sauce, pears, or anything else he's been eating, we're moving on. Today's new food.....bananas. Unfortunately Nate didn't like them much either. Oh well, we'll try again tomorrow.

Picky Eater
May 29, 2009
Nate had been doing so well with trying all his new foods. He'd even gotten to the point that he was chasing the spoon and anticipating each incoming bite. Well all of a sudden he's completely disinterested. He's pinching his lips so tight, turning his head and pushing the spoon away. Even foods he was loving before he's refusing. Weird.

|
Standing Tall
May 28, 2009
Nate accomplished yet another physical feat today, pulling up all by himself. He's always liked being held up, but now he's starting to get the hang of doing it all by himself. He's been grabbing our hands, wiggling his feet underneath himself and pressing up. Today he managed to do the same thing with the use of his toy box. He grabbed the edge, and did a little pull-up so he could peer inside. The look on his face was priceless. He was so proud of himself, and so excited to be taking everything in from his new vantage point. He even got brave enough to let go with one hand and dig into the toy box for something to play with.

Insomnia
May 28, 2009
Nate had another nearly sleepless night last night. He was in a good mood when he and Sharon went out to Walmart in the morning, but he was cranky all evening. Twice during the day he refused to sit and eat his cereal and applesauce. Right after we put him to bed he woke up a few times, but then seemed to settle in. But, at 11:15pm he woke up very angry and was practically inconsolable. Sharon fed him a little, and he kept falling asleep in our arms as we took turns trying to calm him down. At 1am he still wasn't asleep, so Jacqui took him down stairs to let Sharon get some rest. Nate finally fell asleep again around 1:30am while Jacqui was watching TV. She tiptoed upstairs and put him in the crib at 1:45am, hoping that he would stay asleep. Well, luckily he did and she was able to get 4 hours of sleep before heading off to work. Let's hope Nate takes a nap or two during the day and lets Sharon rest, and we'll all hope that tonight goes better.

An Apple a Day
May 26, 2009
Mealtimes are getting messy around here!
Nate has just added his 4th solid food to his menu. Today he had applesauce for the first time. He had the same reaction to his first bite of apples as his first bite of pears. He seemed to enjoy it, but still make a sourpuss face.
After a few days of applesauce, Nate will be moving on to bananas. He has been doing really well eating, and it is really fun to see how Nate reacts to each new food. Look for future updates as Nate's menu gets longer and we get closer to trying some Cheerios!

Happy Memorial Day
May 25, 2009
After a busy couple days, we decided to lay low today and spend a relaxing day at home enjoying another beautiful day out in the yard. We went for a neighborhood walk and after we got home we had a visit from Nana & Papa. We spent the rest of the afternoon outside in the yard. Nate played on a blanket in the grass, and snuggled up in a lawn chair again. Sharon and Jacqui enjoyed dinner out in the yard (BBQ leftovers), and then brought Nate inside to enjoy his dinner - oatmeal and pears. It's not burgers and dogs, but he seems to like it well enough.

Memorial Day Weekend BBQ
May 24, 2009
After driving Grammy & Grampy to the train station, we headed over to Diane & Annette's for a Memorial Day Weekend BBQ. Luckily we made it there just before the rain, thunderstorms, and hail. Needless to say it ended up being an indoor BBQ, but Nate didn't seem to mind at all. He loved playing with all the new and different toys that Diane & Annette have at their house. He loved the truck and train, and he showed off his musical talents playing with a piano / xylophone toy. He even snuck in a rousing game of peek-a-boo with Sharon. He got so excited smiling and laughing, and really seemed to be anticipaiting where Sharon would appear next. So cute! When the weather finally cleared, he got to spend a little time outside on the porch swing with Diane.

Grampy's Little Helper
May 24, 2009
Over the course of his stay, Grampy did a lot of odd jobs and chores for us around the house. The most important work he did was some babyproofing. Nate was very interested in all that Grampy was doing. He was facinated by his drill, and watched every little project get done. Well, when Grampy was working on his final project, anchoring bookshelves to the wall, Nate got out his tools too. When everything was anchored tightly, Grampy propped Nate right up on the shelf, screwdriver in hand.

Backyard Campfire
May 23, 2009
To celebrate the Memorial Day Weekend and the unofficial start of summer, we decided to have a backyard BBQ tonight with Grammy & Grampy. Sharon fired up the grill and we dined on some burgers and hot dogs along with some other BBQ favorites.
After dinner, we all gathered around Sharon's new backyard firepit (an early birthday present from Grammy & Grampy) and enjoyed Nate's first campfire. Nate watched the flames intensely before drifting off to sleep in Sharon's arms. We all stayed snuggled up around the fire roasting marshmallows before heading in to put Nate to bed for the night.

|
Messy Eater
May 22, 2009
While Sharon and Grampy spent most of the day cleaning up the basement after a plumbing leak, Nate spent most of the day hanging out with Grammy. They enjoyed his playroom together, sat outside in the sun, and curled up on the couch. Grammy even got the chance to try to feed Nate his newest food - oatmeal. Nate liked the oatmeal after his first timid spoonfuls, and happily smeared it all over his face, hands, and high chair. Yummy!

Backyard Pool
May 21, 2009
It was a beautiful hot day here today and we decided to spend a good bit of our time outside in the yard. Grampy bought Nate a little baby pool to use in the backyard and we quickly inflated it and filled it up for him. Nate donned his little swim trunks and bucket hat, and took his very first dip. We brought out some bath toys to play with and Nate really seemed to like splashing around out in the sunshine. He lasted for quite a while before getting out and curling up in a blanket in Sharon's arms for a little nap.

Grammy & Grampy's Visit
May 20, 2009
We have been going to White Plains to visit Grammy & Grampy every month, but this month Grammy & Grampy came to visit us. They arrived this afternoon on the train, and were greeted by Sharon and Nate at the train station. We are looking forward to a nice visit here at home and can't wait to see Nate show off his tricks and toys on his own turf. It should be fun

Yay! Poop!
May 19, 2009
Well it looks like the pears did the trick. Nate finally pooped. In fact he pooped three times today. I guess we don't need to worry much about that anymore.
|
|
Waiting for a Poop
May 18, 2009
So, we spent the whole weekend expecting Nate to explode a diaper at the most inopportune moment. Luckily, it never happened and we didn't have to deal with any leaking diapers while we were away. However, there is a bit of a problem. Nate hasn't pooped since Thursday, and that's a bit long even for a breastfed baby.
Sharon called the doctor's office to see what they thought of Nate's little situation and what we should do. They didn't seem too concerned, but suggested Nate lay off the rice cereal for a bit and maybe try some peaches, pears or prunes to help things along. I guess we'll give it a try.

Home Again
May 17, 2009
When we got home from Provincetown Jacqui had a package waiting for her on the doorstep. It was the second part of her Mother's Day present from Nate - a stone marker for the garden. We went out right away to find a good spot for it amid the flowers.
Nate was eager to get back in his playroom. He was so excited to be surrounded by all his toys that he almost started crawling to reach some on the floor. He was able to get his belly up off the ground and onto his hands and knees, but didn't make it anywhere before belly-flopping back down.
All that playing helped Nate work up quite an appetite and we strapped him into his highchair for some rice cereal. We didn't bring any with us for the weekend, so it had been a few days since his last taste. Well, he must have missed it or something, because Nate could not eat that rice cereal fast enough. He was chasing the spoon with his mouth wide open and even trying to help. It was like all of a sudden the whole eating thing just clicked for him. He ended up polished off two bowls of rice cereal before Sharon cut him off.

A Fabulous Weekend Getaway
May 17, 2009
We didn't have much time left down in P-Town, before we needed to head for home. We enjoyed some final glimpses of the beach from our suite while Jacqui enjoyed her leftover cake and ice cream for breakfast. We stopped for a little breakfast on the way out of town, and again for ice cream at Ben & Jerry's before heading back to Diane and Annette's.
We really had a fantastic time in P-Town and loved getting to spend the weekend with Diane and Annette. Nate did really well, and seemed to enjoy all that we did. He made vacationing as a family (and with friends) a lot easier than we ever could have imagined. We hope to have the chance to do it again sometime soon.

Our Day in P-Town
May 16, 2009
Saturday ended up being a beautiful day down in Provincetown and we took full advantage. We took off for the beach first thing and gave Nate another chance to feel the sand. This time we stuck him on a sand dune. He seemed to like it alright at first, but then a little panic seemed to set in and he needed a rescue from Mom.
After the beach we headed in to town to walk around and do some shopping. We made our way down Commercial Street popping in and out of shops. We all got souvenir t-shirts, but Nate's won't fit for a while. It was too cute to pass up though. We also found Nate a new book that we just had to have - "Mommy, Mama and Me." How could we resist? We stopped at the Purple Feather for some pastries and gelato, and later made a stop for some elephant ears. Yum.
We went back to the suite for a quick afternoon break. Nate took a nap and Diane & Annette were nice enough to babysit him while we took a walk on the beach ourselves. When we returned Nate was awake and ready to head back in to town. We did a little bit more window shopping before heading to Bayside Betsy's for dinner. Nate was a hit at the restaurant and got lots of attention from Betsy herself, our waiter and the other diners. He did pretty well sitting during dinner, and tried to swipe some food off our plates. He got a little cranky by the end of the night, but managed to hang in a little bit longer thanks to Annette snuggling him close in her sweatshirt.
After we went back to the suite and got Nate to bed, all us adults enjoyed some dessert and played a few rounds of Rummikub. Yup, every kid's suspicion is true - the fun does continue when they go to bed.

A Walk on the Beach
May 15, 2009
This weekend we were invited to go to Provincetown with Diane and Annette. It's Nate's first vacation somewhere other than a family visit and his first trip to the beach. We were very excited.
We all stayed together in a 2 bedroom suite at the Crow's Nest Resort, right on the bay. The suite was really nice, and had everything we needed for a successful Nate vacation. It had a full kitchen, living room, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and water views from every room. It was right on the beach and we could open our windows and hear the ocean.
After settling in and enjoying Diane's pasta dinner, we all decided to go for a walk on the beach. The weekend weather forecast was a little questionable, so we thought it was best to get out on the beach while the weather looked good. We took turns carrying Nate, and he seemed to enjoy being out in the sun hearing the waves. He got the chance to put his feet in the sand for the first time and left a pair of incredibly cute little footprints. Unfortunately we had to cut our walk short when a heavy fog seemed to roll in out of nowhere.

6 Month Check-Up
May 15, 2009
Nate took a trip to the doctor's office today for his regular check-up, and he had his first appointment with his new doctor. We really liked Dr. DeTora and feel very comfortable with her being Nate's doctor going forward. She even endeared herself to Nate by giving him a present - a new book to enjoy and slobber all over.
The appointment was pretty uneventful. Nate weighed in at 19 pounds, 2 ounces and measured 27 inches. It puts him perfectly proportioned at the 75th percentile. Nate was also given the green light to start on some more solid foods. Dr. DeTora suggested that Nate be introduced to fruits and vegetables starting with light colors and then working through the rainbow spectrum. How fitting.

Hoopster
May 14, 2009
Nate got a chance to try out his half-birthday present and shoot some hoops today. Sharon even got him dressed in his basketball shorts and t-shirt. Nate didn't make too many baskets, but he loved the sound effects and the miniature basketballs. We'll keep practicing and hopefully Nate will improve his stats.

Happy Half-Birthday Nate!
May 13, 2009
We couldn't think of a better way to celebrate Nate's half-birthday than with half a birthday cake. Jacqui made Nana's signature chocolate cake (with chocolate frosting) and Nana and Papa came over to celebrate with us. Unfortunately Nate didn't last too long at his own party and headed off to bed a little early. He barely got to enjoy his present, a baby sized basketball hoop from his mommies.

A Much Better Night
May 12, 2009
For the first night in over a week, Nate actually slept through the night without waking up. He's been suffering from a cold, and us moms have been suffering from sleep deprivation as a result. Last night we all got a good night's sleep and are feeling much better.

Back at the Y
May 11, 2009
Since Sharon is going to be home a while longer she decided it was the perfect time to get back to the Y. She's going to be teaching a soccer class and a t-ball class this summer and is super excited about it. Running around with a class full of 4-6 year olds is just a blast.
Well, to get everything in order Sharon had to make another visit to the Y today. Aside from the paperwork and business conversations, Sharon & Nate had a nice visit. Nate got to meet Christie, the Early Childhood Coordinator, and the teachers in the Child Watch room where Nate will get to spend some time while Sharon is coaching. It will be great for him to have a little social time and play with some other babies a few times a week. We toured the building and chatted with some old friends. We even took a sneak peek at the Nature Adventure Zone playground. Nate seemed awfully interested in it, but will have to wait until he's big enough to go play. The way time is flying it won't be too long.

Mother's Day
May 10, 2009
We thought last year's Mother's Day was special knowing that we were expecting a Bean. This year was even better. We had a pretty low-key kind of day, but it was fantastic celebrating Mother's Day with our little Nate for the first time.
Jacqui and Nate got up and made Mother's Day breakfast complete with waffles and fresh fruit. We spent some time all snuggling and playing together in Nate's playroom. We headed over to Westborough to see Nana and enjoy a BBQ lunch. Aunt Donna was in town and Aunt Merry & Uncle Evan were around too. After a nice visit there we swung by the hospital so Jacqui could visit Nana Bixby.
We got home in time to enjoy a little more play time and then some cute mommy and baby bedtime stories before Nate driffed off to sleep all cuddled up in our arms.

Green Thumbs
May 9, 2009
The pressure was on to come up with a good first Mother's Day present this year. Sharon & Nate spent quite a bit of time shopping around for the perfect present for Jacqui but nothing really seemed to fit.
In the end, Sharon & Nate decided to do the traditional flower thing, but with a twist. Instead of a bouquet that would last a few days, Sharon & Nate decided to plant Jacqui a small garden in the flower bed in the front yard. Now she can enjoy her Mother's Day flowers all spring and summer long.

A Long Night
May 7 - 8, 2009
Nate's been suffering from a bit of a cold for the last week. He's all stuffed up and if you listen closely you can hear his little nose whistle. His nightime routine has been a little off, and he's woken up a few extra times. Well, last night was one rough night. He was up for 4 hours over night. He has two exhausted moms, but surprisingly he seems none the worse for wear. Go figure.

Surprise Visit
May 6, 2009
Nate got a special surprise visit from Aunt Merry & Uncle Evan today. They were nearby visiting Nana Bixby in the hospital, and decided to pop in on Nate too. They didn't stay too long, but they did get to check out Nate's playroom and see some of his newer toys.

A Place of His Own
May 5, 2009
The playroom project continues. Sharon schlepped all of the office type things out and moved Nate's stuff in over the last two days. Nate has a bookshelf with all his books on it, and a day bed to use as a good cuddle up reading spot. His toy box found a home, as well as his ExerSaucer, bouncy chair, and playmat. We were able to find a space for some of his bigger toys so they can stay out and be easier to play with. Best of all, there's a good bit of open, carpeted floor space so Nate can practice his sitting, rolling over and evenutally crawling. The room isn't painted or decorated yet, but at least it's a very Nate-friendly space.
With all the rearranging done, Nate was able to get in there and play in his own space for the first time today. Sharon sat him down right in the middle of the room and just watched. Nate sat there turning his head side-to-side taking it all in. He tried out a new penguin toy, and played with some old favorites. At one point he even rolled himself over to reach something different. He seemed very happy in his own space, and that certainly made all the lifting and lugging well worth it.

Go Yankees!
May 4, 2009
Tonight the Yankees are playing the Red Sox at the new Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Sharon doesn't get to see many Yankee games televised up here in the middle of Red Sox Nation, so she was excited at the thought of sitting down with Nate to watch his first Yankee game. They both got dressed in their Yankee gear (Jacqui wore her Red Sox shirt), and got comfy on the couch. Unfortunately the game ended up on rain delay and Nate had to go to bed before it even got started. Maybe it's for the best since the Yankees ended up losing. Oh well, there's always tomorrow night's game.

Extreme Home Makeover
May 3, 2009
Nate is a very active boy, and it seems as though it's only a matter of time before he'll be rolling, scooting, crawling or cruising all over the house. So, today we decided to start a serious babyproofing effort.
Our main focus right now is to convert our office into a safe playroom for Nate. We hope to get all our stuff out of the room, and get all (or at least most) of Nate's toys and gear in where he can enjoy it a little more comfortably and safely on the carpet.
Sharon loves reconfigurating the house and rearranging the furniture, so she's very excited about getting the project underway. Jacqui is excited about the prospect of repainting the brown room, getting rid of the ugly light fixture and decorating.

Our Proud Family
May 2, 2009
Nate participated in his first Pride Day (or Rainbow Party as Jessie calls it) in Northampton today. We headed out to the parade with Diane and Annette, and were joined by Aunt Merry and Uncle Evan when we arrived for the festivities. Although we don't live in Northampton, we like going to their Pride Day because it has always seemed very family friendly and welcoming. This year we were thrilled to get to attend with Nate in tow.
The weather ended up being great, and we sat and watched most of the parade from a blanket in the grass. Nate was most intereted in playing with the grass, but seemed to take notice of the bright colors, people marching past, and the dogs out enjoying the day. The highlight for Nate and Sharon was definitely the marching band. Nate got kinda excited when they passed us by and that made Sharon very happy.
We spent some time at the festival afterwards and Diane and Annette bought Nate his first Pride T-shirt, a white and red baseball shirt with "Family" across the front all rainbowy. It's really cute and should fit him next year. After the festival we headed for lunch at Sylvester's and had ice cream at Herrel's. Mmmm....
We finished out the day with a visit to Aunt Merry and Uncle Evan's apartment. Nate got a brand new toy to gum and slobber on while we played Bohnanza. He tried to get up close and personal with Mocha T. Cat, but she wanted nothing to do with him (maybe that's for the best). We had a very nice visit but headed for home so Nate could make it to bed at a reasonable time after his very busy day.

A Quick Visit with Auntie Amanda
May 1, 2009
Auntie Amanda came by for a visit tonight, but unfortunately didn't get to enjoy Nate's company for too long. Shortly after her arrival Nate exploded a diaper and had to be whisked away to get cleaned up. Then, after joining us at the table for dinner, Nate got overtired and ended up going to bed early. Bummer. I guess Auntie Amanda (and Uncle Dan too) will have to come back for another visit so Nate can make up for lost time.

It's Official!
May 1, 2009
Earlier this week, after a lot of number crunching and debate, Sharon gave Crossroads her official notice that she will not be returning to her teaching position on June 1st. Instead, we have decided that Sharon will continue to stay home with Nate as a full-time Mom.
We both feel that it is important to put our family first right now. Nate is thriving at home with Sharon, and she has loved every minute of the last 5 1/2 months she has spent with him. We're excited to make this commitment to Nate and our family life.
Thanks to our wonderful parents and families for their love and support of our decision.

Lovin' Spoonful
April 30, 2009
With Nate's 6-month Birthday closing in fast, we've had to begin thinking about getting Nate started on some solid foods. Nate has been showing us all the signs that he is ready and willing to try some new foods. He has been watching intently as we eat, and even grabbing for food off our plates.
Well, tonight was Nate's lucky night. He got his very first taste of some "real" food - rice cereal. Granted, it was more like a bowl of breastmilk with some rice flakes in it, but you gotta start somewhere. Jacqui had the honors of feeding Nate his first bites, and he did super. It's incredible, but this kiddo makes everything easy. Nate was so eager and so cooperative that he actually finished the whole little bowl one tiny spoonful at a time.
Seeing that it went so well, we're planning to keep offering Nate the rice cereal once a day until his 6 month check-up. Then who knows, maybe he can move on to oatmeal or even applesauce. Yay!

Here's What I Have to Say About That...
April 29, 2009
Shriek!!!
It seems as though Nate has discovered a new skill.....screaming. All of a sudden he's been busting out with shrieking screams.
Sometimes Nate screams when you put him down. Sometimes he screams when you take something away. "Newspapers are for reading, not eating, Nate." Sometimes the screams happen when he's happy playing with a toy, and sometimes they happen for no apparent reason at all.
Maybe Nate's having some teething pain, maybe he's started rebelling and protesting already, or maybe it's just new and fun.

Off to School
April 28, 2009
Today Nate made another trip to his future daycare in Westborough. Everyone there was very happy to see him and were surprised by how much he had grown since his last visit.
This trip was a little different then before, because this time Nate got to stay and play for a little while in Ms. Rosie's room while Mom did her own thing for a few hours. According to Ms. Rosie, Nate did great. He played on the floor with a bunch of different toys, impressed his teachers with his independent sitting, used the ExerSaucer, took a bottle with no trouble and had two diaper changes with no exploding diapers. Yay!
Ms. Rosie said Nate was very happy the whole time and didn't cry at all, except when she tried to put him down for a nap. Big surprise. Sharon was happy to hear such a glowing report from Ms. Rosie, but was even happier to have Nate back in her arms.

Spring is in Bloom
April 27, 2009
Back at home today the good weather continued and Sharon and Nate spent some more time outside. They went swinging in the hammock, blew bubbles, chased butterflies and played in the grass a little. While we were away for the weekend, lots of wildflowers (alright, weeds) seemed to blossom all over our yard. Nate seemed to notice them, and when Sharon put him down in the grass to sit, he was reaching for all the flowers and even tried picking some. An early Mother's Day present perhaps?

A Special Visit
April 26, 2009
One of the reasons we were so excited to make a trip up to Vermont was so we could visit Monique's mom, Dorrie. Dorrie hadn't had the opportunity to meet Nate yet, so we were thrilled to stop by and have him pay her a visit.
Nate was sleeping when we first got to Dorrie's apartment, but he woke up soon after. He cuddled up on Dorrie's lap for a while and then showed off his independent sitting skills. Nate wasn't too talkative, but he was on his best behavior. We had nice visit, and look forward to seeing Dorrie again when we head back to Vermont in July.

A Perfect Country Day
April 25, 2009
We could not have asked for a better Vermont country day to spend with Monique. The weather was absolutely beautiful, sunny and very warm. Nate even got to wear some shorts for the very first time. His chunky little legs looked so cute.
We took advantage of the weather and spent a good bit of time outside. We tried to sneak up on some ducks on Monique's backyard pond, but unfortunately we scared them off before we could get too close. Instead we got to see some frogs, and all the frog eggs waiting to hatch.
After exploring the frog pond we took a quick trip to see two horses over in a neighbor's yard. Nate was able to get very close to Lakota, and he and Sharon got a chance to pet her. Lakota was terrific and was very interested in Nate too. She got so close, Nate's toes were practically up her nose.
We took a little trip for some Maple Creamies and to see the rabbit hutch that they had out back. Then we took off for a small town Mud Festival (how much more VT can you get for a little boy?). Nate got to see a local fire truck up close at the festival, and we imagine if he was a little bigger and not all strapped in his carrier he might have climbed all over that truck. Maybe next year. We took a quick tour of downtown Montpelier, and now Nate can cross his first state capital off his travel list.
We wrapped up our day back at Monique's house. Nate enjoyed playing with the dogs and rolling around a bit on the floor. Us grown-ups enjoyed a sampling of some new Ben & Jerry's flavors. Mmmm....
What a perfect Vermont day.

On the Road Again
April 24, 2009
We were back on the road again today, this time heading up to Vermont to visit Aunt Monique. Even though we've been away from home so much, we were really looking forward to this trip. We always have so much fun up in Vermont with Monique, and we haven't seen her (and she hasn't seen Nate) since Christmas.
We made it up to Vermont with only one stop for a feeding and diapering. Even though it was well past Monique's bedtime when we arrived, she was ready to spend a bit of time with Nate. Nate napped in the car, and luckily was up for a little socializiing himself. Nate loved looking around the house, and especially loved seeing Monique's two poodles.

YMCA Visit
April 23, 2009
Nate made his first trip to the YMCA today to visit some of Sharon's friends and check-out the place. Sharon hadn't been back for a visit herself in a while, and nobody there had met Nate yet.
Well, Nate seemed right at home at the Y and did very well visiting with everyone. He was in a really good mood, very content and smiley. He got passed around a bit and luckily managed to keep his lunch down and off everyone's work clothes. He really seemed to like sitting at Lori's Executive Director desk playing with her calculator.
We toured the building and Nate was very interested in watching all the children runniing around. He was also fascinated by the swimming pool. Sharon was happy to see him enjoying the YMCA so much, and is really looking forward to getting him involved there. Maybe there's a Mommy & Me swim class in our future.

Working Backwards
April 23, 2009
So obviously there haven't been any updates on here for a while now. Don't worry, we haven't abandoned the site, we've just been especially busy lately and haven't had a lot of time to devote to keeping things up to date. We're going to do our best to do a little back-tracking and fill in the gaps. Stay tuned.

Backwards "Crawling"
April 22, 2009
Today Nate had some visitors stop by the house. Sharon's friend Michele, Diane & Annette all came over for a visit. It had been quite some time since they had seen Nate and he had a lot of new tricks to show off.
While Nate was laying on the floor enjoying some tummy time, he took advantage of his captive audience. He actually started doing a little backwards crawling. He's been doing the inchworm crawl lately, but this time he managed to pick himself up a little, get his tummy off the floor and wiggle himself backwards. He actually made it right off the blanket on the floor. Looks like full baby-proofing is right around the corner.

Happy to Be Home
April 19, 2009
We have been traveling so much lately and Nate has done fantastic. We are so lucky that he is such and easy-going guy and we can pick-up and go places as much as we do. Today we wrapped up our White Plains visit and headed back home just the three of us. After schleping everything back into the house we all got comfy in the living room for a little much needed down-time. Nate looked so happy and content to be back home with his own things. He played with the cats, had some time in his Exer-Saucer, and got to get his hands on a bunch of his toys that hadn't made the trip with us. He was so happy, smiling, laughing and talking up a storm. He was so obviously happy to be back home.

Happy Birthday Cousin Jessie!
April 18, 2009
Today was Cousin Jessie's 10th Birthday and we all got to celebrate together down in White Plains at Grammy & Grampy's house. There were a ton of party-goers celebrating with us, and Nate had the chance to see some friends and family he hasn't seen since Christmas. He even got to meet Cousins Michelle and Emily for the first time.

Team Rainbow Tie-Dye
April 17, 2009
To celebrate our week together with Jessie, and to show off our super cool new t-shirts, we all got dressed in our tie-dye before jumping in the car to head down to White Plains for the weekend. We were quite a sight when we arrived in all our rainbow tie-dye glory.

Undivided Attention
April 17, 2009
It has been a really busy week around here with Cousin Jessie staying with us. Nate has been a really good sport and has gone along with everything that Jessie has wanted to do, but today he got to do his own thing when he spent the day with Nana & Papa.
Jacqui brought Nate over first thing this morning, and as usual Nana & Papa were ready for him. The stroller was out and ready for a walk, and the car seat was strapped into the backseat. Nate had a nice visit testing out Nana's new stroller on a neighborhood walk, and taking a quick shopping trip to his very favorite store...Target.
Sharon & Jessie came by later in the afternoon to pick up Nate and bring him home for a little playtime before getting back in the car and heading down to White Plains.

Mmmm... Toe Cheese
April 16, 2009
It was only a matter of time. We knew that it wouldn't take long after Nate discovered his feet that he would manage to get them in his mouth. Today was the day. Today, Nate had his first taste of his smelly Stein feet. Thanks for those genes Grampy.

Peek-A-Boo
April 15, 2009
Nate has recently discovered the joy of a never-ending round of Peek-a-Boo. Jessie kept him entertained for quite a while during one particularly exciting game today. Check out the clip in Home Movies.

Fun in the Sun
April 15, 2009
Nate had another full day with Cousin Jessie. We were fortunate enough to have a second beautiful weather day and got to spend our time outside again. We enjoyed the hammock some more (one of Jessie's very favorite things), and had a picnic lunch in the backyard. Most of us enjoyed sandwiches, apple sauce and Swiss Rolls, but Nate was stuck with his bottle. We played some Bocce, and even though Jessie hasn't been practicing at all she beat Sharon and Nate in a very close game.
Our big project of the day was tie-dying some t-shirts. Fortunately Jacqui has done a lot of tie-dying before and remembered how to make all the different shirt designs. She and Jessie did all the dirty work while Sharon and Nate looked on. They made some adult t-shirts, a bunch of kids t-shirts for Jessie, and even two onesies for Nate. After our full day, we went out to Red Robin for dinner and did a little shopping at Target. Then we had to get Nate back home in time for Jessie to help with stories and bedtime.

Happy Tax Day from the best tax deduction ever!
P.S. Thanks Nate for ensuring your Moms a refund this year.

A Busy Day with Jessie
April 14, 2009
Jessie has a long list of things she wants to do with Nate during her visit, and she got off to a great start today. We all got up early and Jessie changed Nate's diaper (just a wet one - she doesn't do poop), and picked out his outift. She helped Sharon give Nate a bath in his tub before she got him dressed for the day.
Jessie wanted to do some baking, and picked out Brownies to make as a surprise for Jacqui. Sharon held on to Nate (to keep his drool out of the batter) and let him play with some mixing bowls and a whisk. Jessie read all the directions, measure all the ingredients and made the Brownies all by herself. She did great!
After baking and some lunch, we went outside to spend some time in the yard and in the hammock together. After a little while Jessie decided she was ready to take Nate for a walk and we got him all set in his stroller. Jessie pushed him all the way down to the playground about 1/2 mile from the house. We hung out there for a bit enjoying the sunshine.
We spent the rest of the day playing with Nate and his toys. We went back outside for a little while, and when it was time for Nate to go to bed Jessie helped Jacqui read him a story and get snuggled up.

Reverse Course
April 13, 2009
Nate spent his 5 month birthday back in the car returning home from Buffalo. At least this trip he had some extra good company with him - Cousin Jessie.
Jessie has school vacation this week, and we decided that it would be nice if she came for a visit. So, we packed her into the back seat with Nate for our long journey home. Jessie did a great job keeping Nate entertained in the car, and helped out a lot with pacifiers and teethers when Nate started to get fussy.
The trip seemed to go quickly. We passed the time playing Road Sign Baseball, singing "Black Socks" and "The 50 Nifty United States", and learning to say the alphabet backwards. We did have to make a few extra stops on the way back home, but overall everybody did pretty well considering how long a trip it was.

Happy Easter!
April 12, 2009
Nate celebrated his first Easter at Aunt Lori's house. Thankfully Mom remembered to pack his Easter basket, and when Nate woke up in the morning the Easter Bunny had visited. His basket was filled with plastic eggs, some new pacifiers, a few new toys, bubbles, two incredibly cute stuffed animals, a Baby's 1st Easter bib, and some chocolate (that must have been for us moms). Nate dug right in to the basket pulling out whatever he could get his little hands on. But what was his favorite thing in the basket? The plastic Easter grass of course!
For the rest of the day Nate watched Cousin Jessie hunt for Easter eggs that the Easter Bunny had hidden. Nate could have found the eggs quicker himself if he could just get himself around. Grammy and Grampy came over, and Aunt Lori & Brenda hosted a yummy ham dinner for everyone.

Aunt Linda's Birthday Bash
April 11, 2009
Today Nathaniel finally got to meet Grandpa's side of the family at Aunt Linda's big birthday party. All of his aunts, uncles and cousins were there, and after Nate finally woke up from his nap he got a chance to work the room a little.
Nate was a little shy at first, but he warmed up fairly quickly and did pretty well getting passed around the room meeting all his relatives. There were a lot of people and a lot going on, but he did great taking everything in stride. He enjoyed playing with a party balloon and he didn't even flinch when it popped right in his face.
He had a little face time with his cousin Cooper who is a couple months older than he is, but it was Cousin Andrea who was the real hit. He just couldn't help laughing and smiling at her.

Buffalo or Bust!
April 10, 2009
Bean took his very first road trip today, a big 8 hour trek out to Buffalo to attend Aunt Linda's 60th birthday party, and celebrate Easter with Aunt Lori and Aunt Brenda. We hit the road early knowing that it could be a really long day, but thanks to Bean being so good in the car we made great time. We made three stops along the way for diaperings, feedings and playtime to help Nate stay in good spirits. He napped a bit in the car, but also had some quiet awake time playing with his toys and listening to his "Toddler Tunes" CDs.
We arrived at Aunt Lori & Aunt Brenda's around 4:30, right before Nate exploded a diaper (good timing). He was in a great mood and of course everyone was happy to see him. He even got a quick visit from neighbor Jen, and Brenda's Aunt Ellen and Uncle Ken who are expecting their first grandchild next month.
Aunt Lori arranged to borrow some baby gear from Joanne (thank you so very much), so Nate was all set up with everything he needed for his visit. We have a full weekend of activities in Buffalo, and then we'll be on the road again for the long trip home on Monday.

Hammock Time
April 9, 2009
Over the weekend we dragged out the hammock from the garage and set it up. We are so eager for the warm weather and the opportunity to use our backyard. Well, today was nice enough and we got the chance to sit out on the hammock for a while this evening. Sitting there we had an instant flashback to when Jacqui first felt Bean kick in Sharon's belly last summer. Bean seemed to like the giant swing effect and it was fun curling up all three of us.

A Snuggly Walk
April 8, 2009
We received a baby carrier from Aunt Donna as a shower gift. We've tried it on inside the house before, but hadn't used it outside since those bulky winter coats kind of get in the way. Since the weather was nice today, Jacqui strapped Nate into the carrier and we took a walk around the neighborhood. Nate seemed comfy snuggled in there, and seemed to like looking around from his new vantage point. Jacqui was a little pooped after carrying him around, but it seems like it's going to work out pretty well.

Opening Day
April 7, 2009
Of course Sharon is planning on raising Nate to be a NY Yankee fan, but unfortunately they don't cover a whole lot of their games here in the middle of Red Sox Nation. So, since today was the home opener for the Sox, Sharon decided it might be a good time to introduce Bean to baseball. She got him dressed up in his baseball outfit, and they settled in to watch the game. Sharon gave Nate the play-by-play and practiced cheering, doing the wave and singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the 7th Inning Stetch. Jacqui got home in time to see the end of the game and feast on hot dogs, french fries, and Red Sox ice cream.

Better Sitting
April 6, 2009
We've been giving Nate some additional opportunities to try sitting on his own. He's slowly getting better at it. We caught one of today's attempts on video. Check it out in Home Movies.

Early Easter
April 5, 2009
Since we are going to be away next weekend, Nana & Papa stopped by today to celebrate Easter a little early and deliver Nate his very first Easter basket. His basket was filled with a stuffed bunny, some bath toys, musical keys, a Berenstein Bears Easter book and a few other goodies. Nate did a pretty good job reaching in and grabbing for his presents. He really seemed to like the bunny, and we'll have to give the bath toys a try soon too.

Laughing Fit
April 4, 2009
Nate is quickly developing a sense of humor. Sometimes it's obvious what he's laughing at (usually mom's silly faces), but sometimes he just busts out into spontaneous laughter for what seems like no reason. He had an extended laughing fit today while bouncing on Sharon's belly. Check out the video in the Home Movies Section.

Sitting Pretty
April 2, 2009
It looks as though all of Nate's practice sitting in his Bumbo has begun to pay off. Today he managed to sit unassisted with no Bumbo, or pillows propping him up. It wasn't long before he toppled over, but he sure seemed happy sitting there by himself looking at his mommies from across the playmat.

Sunday with the Family
March 29, 2009
Nathaniel got to spend some time with Nana, Aunt Merry & Uncle Evan today. It had been awhile since we had all been together, and Nate had the chance to play with everyone. We went over to Nana's mid-morning with the the plan to visit for a little while and then all head out to lunch together.
Nate was in a pretty good mood right from the start and seemed to enjoy playing on the floor with everyone. He was standing up and checking out all that was going on and practicing taking some steps. He spent some time on the floor both on his back and on his tummy rolling around and grabbing for his toys. He noticed Nana's cat Nimbus pretty quickly and got a chance to pet him with some help from Mommy and Auntie Merry. Merry took out some stuffed animals from her vast collection and showed them to Nate. He was definitely curious about them, and couldn't help inspecting each one with his mouth.
We all headed out to Bertucci's for lunch together. Nate fell asleep within minutes of getting in the car to go, and miraculously stayed asleep through the entire meal. Maybe it was the soundtrack of Italian standards playing over the sound system. He slept the whole way back to Nana's. Nate woke up for a bit more playtime with everyone when we got back, but the fun ended abruptly when he exploded a diaper on Auntie Merry. Ewww!

Rockin' and Rollin' All Night
March 28, 2009
Nate seems to have gotten used to sleeping in his sleep sack instead of all swaddled up. He seems pretty comfy and has been sleeping through the night. Sharon still wakes up several times a night just to check on him though. Last night when she woke up and peeked in on Nate he had flipped himself over and was sleeping on his tummy. She went down to the kitchen for a glass of water contemplating whether or not she shoud flip him back over to his back and risk waking him up. Well, when she got back upstairs a few minutes later her decision had been made for her. Bean had flipped himself back over and was still fast asleep.

Frontyard Picnic
March 27, 2009
Another beautiful day and another great opportunity to get Nate outside to enjoy our yard. Sharon and Nate headed outside this afternoon, picnic blanket in hand, and got comfy on the grass in the front yard. They spent time laying on their backs looking up at the blue sky and the few passing clouds. They spent time laying on their tummies watching the cars and the people going by. They even spent time talking to a few neighbors (and a very cute labradoodle named Molly) who stopped by to chat and meet Nate.
When Jacqui got home from work and it was still sunny and bright, Sharon decided to have a picnic dinner out in the yard. Sharon went in to prepare a quick dinner, all the while hearing Jacqui and Nate laughing and playing outside. We had a nice meal sitting on our picnic blanket in the front lawn with Nate, but had to pack it up when we heard the familiar sound of a messy diaper.

A Restless Night for All
March 27, 2009
Since Nate managed to flip himself over all snuggled up Wednesday night, we got a little worried that he might do it again and end up stuck on his tummy all night long (a real no-no). So, we decided to try to get him to sleep in a sleep sack last night, instead of all swaddled up. We thought that if he did flip to his stomach, he would have a much easier time flipping back if he wanted or needed to.
It took a little extra snuggling to get him to settle down at first, but he fell asleep pretty soundly by 8:45. Success! He was still sleeping comfortably when we got into bed later in the night. Then, at 1:45 Nate woke up. At first we tried to ignore him, hoping he would settle himself back down. No luck. We took turns snuggling, cuddling and rocking him back to sleep, but as soon as we put him back in the crib he would wake up screaming. By 2:45, Sharon decided she would just give in and nurse him since he had been awake so long and was probably hungry. Nate ate well but was still wide awake. Sharon finally got him back to sleep by 4:00am. And how late did Nate sleep-in after his long night? 6:15. Ugh!

Back Flip (Back to Tummy that is)
March 26, 2009
We put Nate to bed last night snuggled up tight in his SwaddleMe blanket. He slept through the night as he usually does, and was still sleeping peacefully on his back when Jacqui's alarm woke her up for work. Then, after one of her snooze button naps, she looked in on Nate in his crib and found him flipped over and sleeping on his stomach. Nate hasn't been able to flip from his back to his stomach even when he has full use of his arms and legs, but somehow he managed to do it this morning all swaddled up like a Bean burrito.

Visiting Momma Bee and the Monkeys
March 25, 2009
We finally found a day when it would work out for Sharon and Nate to go visit Jacqui again at work. It had already been 2 months since he had visited, and we suspected that he might actually enjoy seeing the monkeys in the lobby of her building.
Sharon and Nate arrived around lunchtime. Jacqui had packed a picnic lunch for Sharon and herself, and they enjoyed it at one of the picnic tables outside. It was a beautiful day, but it was a little cold, so we didn't stay outside very long.
Then we went inside to check out the monkeys in the lobby. The monkeys are common marmosets and they are tiny and very cute. They noticed us and Nate noticed them. He couldn't take his eyes off them, and was tracking them as they jumped from vine to vine. A couple of them came over to the glass for a closer look. Seeing how interested Nate was in the marmosets makes us want to take him to a zoo to see what he thinks of the other animals.
When we were finished with the monkeys we went up to Jacqui's office and Nate got to see Jacqui's co-workers again. He was very happy and social for a while and let a few people hold him, but it wasn't too long before he started to get a little cranky and we decided it was time for Nate to say his goodbyes to Jacqui and the monkeys.
We all had a lot of fun, and Jacqui hopes that Sharon and Nate make at least one more visit before Sharon goes back to work.

Nate's Kitty Cats
March 24, 2009
So far both Bailey and Nemo (our poor neglected cats) have been super with Nate. They've been remotely interested in him at times, but typically keep a distance. Nemo does like to curl up as a guard cat of sorts next to Nate's crib, but thankfully has not ventured inside while Nate's been resting in there.
Nate has been paying more attention to his kitty cats and when he's sitting up in his Bumbo or highchair he tracks them around the room. Well today Bailey was brave enough to come within arms reach of Nate and he seized the opportunity to reach out and touch her. In fact he really lunged for her with both hands. I wish I could say that he pet her, but that's not the case. It was more like he grabbed a chunk of her fur and skin. He even got a death-grip on her tail. Bailey was great about it, and actually seemed to appreciate the attention. She made a few more passes and rubbed her head on Nate's hands giving Sharon an opportunity to help Nate learn how to pet her gently.

Nate's Favorite New Toy
March 23, 2009
Nate really seems to love being on his feet and standing up. As a result, we have been considering buying him an ExerSaucer to give him a safe way to be up and about. While we were in White Plains, Nate impressed everyone with his ability and eagerness to be on his feet. When Grammy saw what Nate could do she decided she wanted to buy him an ExerSaucer. So, on our way home last night we picked one up. Jacqui put it together after getting Nate to bed, so we had to wait until today to see him give it a try.
Sharon put Nate in his new barnyard themed ExerSaucer as soon as she could. It took a minute for him to get his bearings, but it quickly became obvious that Nate loved his new toy. He was reaching for all the animals, smiling, laughing and bouncing around. It's a fantastic energy outlet for him.
Nate's slowly figuring out how to move himself around in the seat and how to use each of the different toys. It's a great new activity for Nate, and us mommies are having so much fun watching him enjoy it so much. Thanks Grammy!

Stuck in a Tree
March 22, 2009
We spent most of Sunday visiting with Mimi & Grandpa at their house. It was another good weather day, so we decided to spend a bit of time exploring their yard. Sharon took Nate to sit on the stone wall in front of the house and they counted passing cars just like Mimi & Grandpa had done with Sharon as a kid. She also insisted on helping Nate climb the big tree in their backyard. Nate perched on a lower branch for a little while, but started crying when he realized he was stuck in a tree and couldn't get down.

White Plains Walking Tour
March 21, 2009
While we were in White Plains, Sharon wanted to take Nate for a little hometown walking tour. It was a sunny Saturday so it seemed like a perfect way to spend the afternoon. We walked through Sharon's neighborhood and she narrated the whole tour with details about where she played as a kid, where her friends lived, families she babysat for, and good trick-or-treat houses. We even took a detour to the Jacob Purdy House, George Washington's headquarters for the Battle of White Plains. It's never to early to squeeze in a little history lesson.

Worst Car Ride Ever
March 20, 2009
We were off to White Plains again today for our monthly visit. As usual we left after Nate had been fed and changed - we try to set ourselves up for success. The ride typically takes between 2 1/2 and 3 hours, and Nate usually sleeps most of the way.
Today, was a totally different story. We hadn't even made it one exit before Nate was hysterical in the back seat. We pressed on a little hoping that the car ride would lull him to sleep as it usually does, but no luck. We got off the highway and checked things out. Everything seemed fine, but we decided to have Sharon sit in the back with him to keep him company and hopefully cheer him up. We unpacked the back seat and moved all our stuff around and were on the road again.
Nate seemed a bit happier at first, but it wasn't long before he was crying and screaming again. Sharon tried talking to him, digging out some toys, letting him play with her hands and making funny faces. Nothing seemed to help. He just kept crying. We finally decided to stop again and give him a little bit extra to eat just in case he hadn't had enough. We pulled off a random Conn. exit and found "Pizzeria Pomodoro" - how fitting.
Back on the road Nate continued to cry. We contemplated making a third stop but before we could get to the exit Nate finally conked out. Thankfully.
In the end Nate cried for 2 hours straight. We don't think he's cried so long or so hard ever before. It was kind of strange. When we arrived in White Plains he woke up and was in a perfectly good mood. It didn't seem like there was anything wrong, just a bad case of cranky overtiredness (and maybe a little teething mixed in). It was heartbreaking for us though and we can't help but think what our 7 hour trip to Buffalo is going to be like in a few weeks.

Napping Troubles
March 19, 2009
Nate hasn't been much of a daytime napper for some time now, and he has been getting by on just his overnight sleep. However, lately we've been noticing that he's been rubbing his eyes, and getting cranky a lot more during the day. Despite all these obvious "I'm tired" signals he's been sending, he still refuses to nap at home during the day with Sharon.
When Nate is getting tired, Sharon swaddles him up, takes him upstairs and does a miniature version of his bedtime routine complete with rocking and his same lullaby CD. He'll start to drift off, but as soon as he gets put down in the crib his eyes pop open and he's hysterical. Sharon's been giving him some time to try to cry it out, but often has to take several trips up and down the stairs before it becomes obvious that the nap is just not going to happen. Today she spent an hour trying to get him down for a nap that he certainly needed, but never actually took.
Our hope is that it will be a bit easier to get a real nap schedule going, now that Nate is a little older and his routine is a little more established. If anybody has any advice we're all ears.

Nate's 1st St. Patrick's Day
March 17, 2009
Nate celebrated his first St. Patrick's Day today. He donned his green and headed to Diane's for an international playdate of sorts. No, not Irish friends, but Diane and Annette's niece and nephew who were visiting from Japan. Hey, everybody is Irish on St. Patrick's Day.
We ended up back home for dinner and practiced making a festive St. Patrick's Day dinner that we can make for Bean once he's eating solid foods. Green mashed potatoes, carrots and peas make for a very Irish-looking plate.

4-Month Check-Up
March 16, 2009
The two months since Nate's last doctor's appointment flew by and we were eager to get him back in for his check-up. It was obvious to us that he was growing by leaps and bounds, and learning all kinds of new things, but we were curious about what Dr. Garnett would have to say about his development. We were thrilled when it was all good news yet again.
We're not kidding when we say Nate's been growing like crazy. He weighed in at 16 pounds (the 75th percentile), and measured 26 1/4 inches (the 90th percentile). He's one big boy! We had been concerned that maybe he wasn't getting enough to eat since he's been spitting up so much, but clearly that's not a problem. He'll stick with nursing exclusively until his next visit, and then we'll talk about introducing some solid foods.
Nate did demonstrate his superior spit-up skills during his appointment. In fact, he wowed Dr. Garnett with the quantity and duration of his spitting-up episode. By the time we left the office, the whole exam table was covered. Yuck!
We talked for a bit about Nate's exploding diapers, his typical schedule and sleep habits, as well as what he's been up to with his physical development. Everything seemed right on track. Dr. Garnett agreed that Nate does appear to be teething, but that's perfectly normal for his age too.
Before we left Nate did get three more immunizations. One oral vaccine and two shots. He held up pretty well, and only cried briefly until Sharon was able to scoop him right up.

Dining Out (Without Nate)
March 14, 2009
Nate was back at Nana and Papa's today so Sharon and Jacqui could go into Boston to celebrate their anniversary at "The Chocolate Bar". Shortly after getting there (and before we had even left for Boston), Nate exploded a diaper all over himself. Nana was kind enough to clean it up so we could make it on time for our reservations.
We were both really looking forward to our date, but it was hard to leave Nate for another day. We chatted about him the whole way there and Sharon even made reference to Nate in the backseat, before realizing that he wasn't there.
We really enjoyed The Chocolate Bar - 125 chocolate desserts is pretty impressive, and we would certainly recommend it to any true chocoholic. It was so good in fact, that Sharon managed to sample and indulge in more chocolate than Jacqui. The chocolate crepes bar was particularly tasty and worth a second trip.
It was nice to have some time to ourselves, but Nate was never out of mind. We didn't think "The Chocolate Bar" would have been fun for him, but there was a little guy in a high chair two tables over from us who was having a great time smearing chocolate all over the place. If we ever go back (and if Jacqui has her way we certainly will), maybe we'll bring Nate along too.

A Day With Nana
March 13, 2009
Jacqui's parents are off on Fridays, and they have been very generous and have offered to watch Nathaniel on Fridays when Sharon goes back to work. This week we decided that we would do a trial run and let Nana watch Nate so Sharon could run a few errands in the morning.
The three of us got up extra early so that we would have time to get Nate dressed and fed, and Jacqui could make it out the door in enough time to drop Nate off at Nana's and still make it to work on time. Jacqui got Nate up and dressed in a very cute outfit (one that Nana had bought for him on one of her vacations), and then handed him off to Sharon to get fed. Things were going pretty smoothly, until Nate had another of his dirty diaper explosions. It took awhile for Jacqui to clean him up and change him, but we all decided that we would stick with the plan even though Jacqui would be a little late to work.
When Jacqui and Nate got to Nana's she had his playpen set up in the family room, a blanket on the floor for him to play on, and toys at the ready. Nate had fallen asleep in the car, so Jacqui was able (sadly) to make a quick exit. She didn't make it too long without calling Nana to check in on how Nate was doing.
Later in the day, after Sharon had done some laundry, updated the website, gone to BJs and to the bank, she arrived at Nana's to get Nate. Nana and Papa gave Nate a good report. They had lots of fun playing and eating and napping, and Nate had been in a good mood that day.
It ended up being a good day for everyone. Nana and Nate had fun, and Sharon got some chores done a little quicker than she can with Nate around. We are looking forward to doing a few more trial runs before Sharon goes back to work. Thanks Nana and Papa!

Raspberries
March 12, 2009
After quite a bit of trying to mimic Mom's silly faces and noises, Nate has finally figured out how to do raspberries. It's a little hit or miss right now, probably because sometimes the excessive drooling helps, and sometimes not. Regardless, he's got a good thing going and it cracks us all up.

Patty Cake with Etan
March 11, 2009
Nate's been noticing mirrors for a while now and really enjoys playing with them. In fact, Sharon has made it a pretty regular activity for him during the day. They sit in front of the mirror together, make funny faces and sing songs with silly hand motions. Good times!
Today's playtime was a little different though. Instead of just sitting there looking at the mirror, Nate decided it was time to reach out and interact with that little boy on the other side of the glass. He scooched closer to the mirror (with mom's help of course) and laughed and smiled as he put his hands and feet on the glass to play with Etan for the first time.

Nathaniel's Birth Certificate
March 10, 2009
It's funny to think that on this day last year we found out from Sharon's doctor that we were officially pregnant. This year we took our nearly 4 month old son down to Auburn Town Hall to pick up his birth certificate. A dream come true!
It took a bit longer for Nate's birth certificate to be processed due to the whole two mommies thing. It needed to be sent to the state for some additional approval. In the meantime, we've had a copy provided to us at the hospital that lists Jacqui as Nathaniel's father. So, we were pretty excited to get to pick up his new and improved birth certificate today. The new one reads...
Father * Jacqueline Geneva Bixby
* Second Parent
Ugh! Come on Massachusetts! We needed special approval from the state for a birth certificate with "father" scratched out and " * second parent" scribbled in at the bottom? Really? How official. How inclusive. Ridiculous!

3 Explosions!
March 9, 2009
So, we've been having a bit of a diaper situation lately. It seems that everytime Nate poops, his diaper explodes. Really, every time. Today, was particularly bad. Nate exploded three diapers. Three! That's a lot of poop all over the place. The poor boy ends up with it on his belly, back, legs, and sometimes even in his hair. Yuck!
After doing a little research, it seems like leaking and exploding diapers are a really common problem with breastfed babies. It should get a bit better once Nate starts on some solid foods, but that probably won't be for another month or two. In the meantime, it's extra baths for Nate and lots of extra laundry for Mom.

Shopping Spree
March 8, 2009
Nate really doesn't need more clothes (as least not yet), but when Nana happened upon a good coupon for Carter's she decided she would like to take us and Nate on a shopping trip. We all met at the shopping center and enjoyed a nice lunch at Applebee's before we got going with the shopping. Nate didn't really feel like staying in his seat at the restaurant, but after we scooped him up he did a pretty good job staying on good behavior and letting us enjoy our lunch.
When we were done eating (just in time because Nate was getting fussy), we headed over to Carter's. They had a ton of new spring and summer clothes that were on sale. Sharon & Jacqui usually shop exclusively on the clearance racks, so it was nice to get the chance to check out some of the newer items that we hadn't seen before. Nana was incredibly generous, and we all picked out several new shirts and shorts for the warm weather. Nate even got an adorable pair of sneakers. Now all we have to do is wait for the warm weather to come around so we can dress Nate in his new duds.

Family Fun in the Yard
March 7, 2009
We were blessed with another beautiful day today, and fortunately it landed on a weekend so we could all enjoy the good weather together (and have enough hands to snap some photos along the way).
We got up and out for a brisk walk around the neighborhood. We put Nate in his stroller without his car seat attached, so he definitely had a better view of where we were going. He stayed awake the whole walk, looking around, playing with his toy, and talking to his Mamas.
After our walk we decided to spend some time out in the yard. Again, Nate seemed interested in the passing cars and people. We sat around watching it all go by in the warm sun. We explored the yard (it wasn't quite so muddy today), and played with more rocks, sticks and leaves. Nate really loved being outside, spending time being passed between mommies. The mommies loved it too.

Nate's Big Boy Voice
March 6, 2009
Until recently Nate has been a pretty soft spoken guy. He's been cooing very quietly and even his laughs have been on the soft side. Now, all of a sudden, Nate has found his big boy voice and is talking up a storm. He's got a whole new set of sounds and he's found a loud, strong voice. It's incredibly cute to watch him test his lungs and contort his face to make all his new sounds.

Look What I Found!
March 5, 2009
While playing on the floor today with some of his toys. Nate inadvertently found his own feet. He was stretching and reaching to get one of his toys and grabbed hold of his bare foot instead. He looked so surprised! He held on with his hands and kept wiggling and clenching his toes. He hasn't figured out how to get them up to his mouth yet, but it's probably only a matter of time.

Squeezable Cheeks
March 4, 2009
Nate has been interested in faces for a while now and seems to really enjoy studying them up close. Now, with his improved motor skills, he's been reaching out to examine them a little closer. He loves touching (and squeezing) our cheeks, noses and lips. He will even grab hold and pull us closer so he can see things even better.

5000 Visits!
March 3, 2009
Today the Baby Bean website has officially hit 5000 visits. I guess there are a lot of people who are checking in with us here. It feels great to know that Nate is loved so much. Thanks everyone!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
March 2, 2009
We want to be the kind of moms who plan special surprises for our kids. Although Nate is too young to appreciate our efforts, it's never too early to start some fun family traditions. So, when we realized that it was Dr. Seuss' birthday today we decided we had to celebrate. We all got dressed in our Dr. Seuss clothes (yes, we all have some), and curled up for a Dr. Seuss story marathon. Nate really seemed to like the illustrations and the rhyming text, and he actually stayed interested for a while. The night was a success and we're already talking about what we can do to celebrate the day next year. Green eggs and ham anyone?

Documenting Bean
March 1, 2009
We had grand plans of documenting Nate's early days in scrapbook form. A customized baby book of sorts that would be personal, and more accurately reflect our family. Unfortunately we've discovered that chunks of free time are hard to come by. We often struggle to find enough time to keep this website updated with short little blog entries, so finding enough time to pull our all our scrapbooking supplies is out of the question. Thankfully, Cousin Jessie scrapbooked some Bean pictures and shared them with us online. They look great Jessie! Thanks for sharing!

A Visit to Nana Bixby's
February 28, 2009
Nate made his first trip to visit Nana Bixby at her apartment to celebrate her birthday. He settled in and got comfy on her lap very quickly. He surveyed the living room, and got his first glimpse of Nana's extensive Santa Claus collection. Santa didn't really hold Nate's attention though. He was much more interested in the flag flapping in the wind on her balcony.
It had been a while since Nana had seen Nate and he's much more entertaining then he was during their last encounter. He scanned the room for familiar faces and continually gave Aunt Donna the cold shoulder, refusing to make eye contact with her. In the end he put on quite a show smiling and laughing for everyone.

A New Funny Face
February 27, 2009
Nate has made funny faces since he first arrived on the scene. We've managed to catch many of them on our camera and you can see some of them here on the website. Well, he's added a new facial expression to his repertoire the last few days and he can't seem to get enough of it. He's been practicing his new "no lips" face all the time. We finally managed to snap a picture of it, and we think the spit bubbles just add to his charm.

A Beautiful Day
February 26, 2009
The weather was so nice today that Sharon just had to take Bean outside to enjoy it. The temperature was mild for February, and the sun was shining. We put on our coats and ventured out.
Hoping to instill an appreciation for the outdoors and a passion for camping, Sharon gave Nate some leaves, rocks and sticks to feel and hold onto. He inspected everything very closely. Luckily Sharon intercepted each attempt Nate made to put the natural wonders in his mouth.
Nate was very interested in looking around and checking things out. We watched people passing by walking their dogs, teens riding past on bikes, and kids getting off the school bus. Nate seemed most interested in all the passing cars. As soon as he could hear one approaching he would scan to find it and watch it drive past the front of the house. Together we counted 22 cars rolling by our house before it was time to head in.
It was so refreshing to be out sitting in the sun and breathing in the fresh air. We're definitely looking forward to the coming spring and the opportunity to get out and enjoy the yard even more. There's a hammock with Nate's name on it.

Virtual Visits
February 25, 2009
This year for Valentine's Day, Grampy bought us, Lori and Grammy all webcams. The idea is for Nate to have virtual visits with everyone. We created a Skype account and have been connecting with family online. Nate sits on our lap or in his high chair and watches the monitor. I'm not sure how much he notices what's happening on the screen, but he definitely hears the familiar voices.
So far Nate's visited with Grammy & Grampy, Mimi & Grandpa, Aunt Monique, and Aunt Lori, Aunt Brenda & Jessie. Jessie even read him a bedtime story one night until he fell asleep in Jacqui's arms. He's had a few good sessions, and a few not so good ones. Sometimes he's attentive and talkative, sometimes not. But, all in all, we think it's a nice way to stay connected especially with people we don't get to see often enough.

First 100 Days
February 21, 2009
We try to take things one day at a time, and make the best of each and every day together. We enjoy Nate for who he is and what he's doing each day. It seems like he's always changing, and every day brings something new. 100 days have brought a lot of changes...
For starters, he's growing by leaps and bounds. He's practically doubled in size since his first days. His chicken legs are a thing of the past, and he's developing those oh so cute chubby baby legs. His newborn cry is long gone and instead he occassionally wails from teething pain. He nurses better than ever, and when he's bottle feeding he easily scarfs down 6 ounces. He sleeps through the night (with rare exception), and only takes short naps (if at all) during the day.
He's been a mover and a shaker right from the start, that hasn't changed one bit. He barely sits still and he's astounded us with his abilities. Rolling over at barely 3 weeks old, and now nearly rolling back the other way to his belly (it's going to happen any day now). He can lift his head and chest when he's laying on his tummy, and holds his head steady when being held upright. He's more interested in his toys, and he holds and even grabs for them.
His personality continues to develop and we see more and more of who he is. He's still a thinker, very observant and serious while taking in his surroundings. He's grown more and more social, and is comfortable with most people. He knows and loves his mommies, and greets us with big smiles. He appreciates silliness and laughs with his head bouncing from side to side. He's developed quite a repertoire of funny faces and strings them together in hillarious displays of emotion. He responds to voices and coos in return. You can just tell that he has something to add to the conversation.
He's truly come a long way in his first 100 days and has accomplished a lot. He's off to a great start!

The Big W.P.
February 20-22, 2009
We took off for another weekend visit to White Plains. And although Nate didn't do quite as well in the car on the way down this time, he did have a very good visit. He managed to stay much more in routine and it definitely reflected in his mood. He was a happy guy throughout the trip and never seemed to get into that overstimulated, overtired, cranky mode.
As usual Nate spent most of his time visiting with Grammy & Grampy, and Mimi & Grandpa. But this trip he also got a visit from Auntie Angie, Donald & Nina, and Dana & Danny. He also met Aunt Mary for the first time, and had a mini playdate with Mary (one of our David Terrace neighbors) and her 8-month old daughter Alexa.

Teething?
February 18, 2009
So lately Sharon is convinced that Nate has started teething. It seems awfully early, but after consulting with "What to Expect the First Year" it does seem possible. Most babies get their first tooth sometime between 5 and 9 months, but teething symptoms can start a few months before the first tooth emerges.
We've noticed some tell tale signs. First off, he's been waking up in the middle of the night lately. A big change in routine since he's been sleeping through the night for months now. He's been drooling a lot (as if spit-up wasn't messy enough). He's putting everything in his mouth and chomping on his hands (granted that could just be the age). And our mellow little guy has been unusually fussy for no apparent reason.
Seems like classic teething symptoms. Looks like it's time to break out the chilled washcloths and teething rings!

Our Little Boy is Growing Up
February 17, 2009
With Nate hitting the three month mark, and space in his closet at a premium, we decided it was time to pack up all the clothes he's grown out of. It was quite bittersweet. It's hard to believe that he's gotten so big. He was practically swimming in his clothes for so long, and now all of a sudden so many of them don't button or zip up well anymore. It's exciting to see how much he's grown and it will be great to see him in a new set of clothes, but we're really going to miss those tiny onesies. So for now, all his little outfits have been retired to the basement waiting to re-emerge whenever Sprout arrives on the scene.

Bumbo
February 16, 2009
Nate is so strong and has such good posture, that we decided it was time to encourage him to sit upright a little more. It will give him a new vantage point on things and hopefully it will help with his baby pattern baldness too. We went out and purchased a Bumbo to help him practice sitting on his own. He was a little unsure of it at first, but now he really seems to like it. He's pretty steady sitting in it, and is able to turn his neck and head to check out what's going on around the room. Unfortunately, he's gotten so good at it that he can turn to see the tv no matter where we put him.

Alone Time with Nana & Papa
February 15, 2009
Nate got to spend the afternoon at Nana & Papa's house while Sharon & Jacqui went out for a belated Valentine's Day dinner. Nate had a chance to snuggle with his grandparents, play on the floor, and Nana even bought him a new giraffe toy to play with. Papa took the opportunity to do a mini photo shoot and ended up with some really cute pictures (which was a great surprise for us). According to Nana & Papa all went well and everybody had a great afternoon together.

Valentine's Day
February 14, 2009
Our little Bean got to celebrate his first Valentine's Day today. Apparently he has a lot of Valentine sweethearts, because he received lots of 1st Valentine's Day cards in the mail over the last week. Thank you everyone.
Being the thoughtful, sensitive, new-age male that he is, Nate remembered to buy both his Moms Valentine's Day cards. He even picked up a special box of chocolate for his Momma Bee. How sweet!

Nate's 3 Month Birthday
February 13, 2009
Nate celebrated his 3 month birthday today. Jacqui was home sick with a cold, so Nate got to spend the whole day with both his Moms. We had a fairly low key day overall, but Jacqui did make good on her promise to bake Nate some dinosaur cupcakes to celebrate. Although Sharon had to eat his cupcake for him (sometimes it's so hard to be a mom), he did seem to enjoy putting his hands in the frosting (and then all over everything else).

Walking Tour
February 11, 2009
The weather was absolutely beautiful in Auburn today - bright sunshine and temps in the mid-50s. The perfect day for Nate to get his first walking tour of his neighborhood. Sharon got him all situated in his stroller and took to the streets (we don't have sidewalks in our quiet neighborhood). Along the way they met some other neighborhood moms and babies out for a walk and Sharon proudly introduced Nate. It was a great way to get some fresh air on such an unexpectedly warm February day. Sharon got in a brisk 45 minute walk, and Nate took a relaxing 45 minute nap.

A Change in Plans
February 9, 2009
After some thoughtful consideration and a lot of number crunching over the weekend, we've decided to postpone Nate's start at daycare. Instead, Sharon will extend her maternity leave a while longer so that she can remain at home with Nate during the day.
It's not that we don't like Nate's daycare program, we just both agree that right now the best place for him is at home with his family. He's been getting Sharon's undivided attention all day every day and is just thriving. So, why mess with a good thing? He's still so little (especially compared with his classmates), and we don't really think he'll benefit too much from daycare at this point. The only thing he really stands to get out of it at his age is a cold.
So, we'll be sticking to a strict budget over the next several months to make it work, but we truly believe it will be worth it in order to give Nate the best start possible.

First Visit with Auntie Amanda and Uncle Dan
February, 8 2009
Today, Nate finally got to meet his Auntie Amanda and Uncle Dan (Amanda is Jacqui's best friend from elementary school). With everyone's schedule so busy lately, we hadn't seen Amanda and Dan in a long time. They had yet to meet Nate, and Sharon had yet to see their award winning remodeled kitchen. It was the day before Auntie Amanda's birthday so we brought over some cupcakes, and were planning an afternoon of games.
Nate woke up as soon as we got to their house, and smiled at his Auntie Amanda right away. They were both really good with him. Nate really enjoyed sitting on the couch with Uncle Dan, and was very content in his arms. And, Amanda fed him a bottle while Jacqui and Dan picked up a pizza. Nate was very content the whole time we were there, and was very happy to watch the Food Netwook and then watch us play Playstation. For a Christmas present they gave Nate a very cute and educational puppy which we are looking forward to playing with. We are looking forward to hopefully seeing them again soon. We had a really great time, and we think Nate did, too.

Nate Care 101
February 7, 2009
Auntie Merry and Uncle Evan came over to visit today. They wanted to spend a little more time with Nate and to learn how to take care of him in case we needed them to babysit in a pinch. Well actually, they wanted to learn just enough to get by in an emergency until someone else who knows what they're doing could get there.
We had a nice lunch with them at Friendly's, and then headed back to the house to spend time with Nate. Nana stopped by for a little while, too. Merry and Evan did a great job with Nate. They both fed him a bottle and burped him, and got a lesson in diaper changing from Nana. They walked him around when he was getting fussy, and Auntie Merry did a finger puppet show for Nate. Later, Nana held Nate so that we could play a few games.
We were very impressed at how much more comfortable Auntie Merry and Uncle Evan are with Nate now, and we would let them watch him anytime! We hope to get to see them again soon, since we don't see them often enough.

Finally Friday
February 6, 2009
Jacqui was really happy to get home tonight after a long week at work. She had been looking forward to some playtime with Nathaniel all day. She and Nate spent much of the evening playing on the floor in the living room. Jacqui offered Nate his zebra rattle, and for the first time he actually reached out and grabbed it. It took him awhile to grasp it, but after much concentration he took it in his hands and held it close. This was the first time he reached out and took one of his toys from Momma Bee, and she couldn't have been more proud.

Daycare Visit
February 4, 2009
Today we went to visit Nate's daycare over in Westborough. We had some paperwork that needed to be filled out and Nate needed to check the place out before he is scheduled to begin.
We got a very warm welcome from the front office staff and directors which was very nice. Everyone remembered us from our previous visit and our many phone conversations. They were so excited to finally get to meet Nathaniel.
The three of us were escorted down to Nate's classroom where we got to meet his lead teacher Miss Rosie, her assistant Miss Margaret, and his future classmates. Miss Rosie showed us around and explained a lot of the classroom procedures and schedule. It was very organized, clean and tidy.
Nate will be the 6th baby in his class. He is by far the youngest baby in his class (and in the whole center). He's quite a peanut compared to the rest of the babies, and it made us realize that although we think he is getting so big he's really still just a little guy.
We spent a good bit of time in Nate's classroom. Nate didn't really interact with any of the other babies, but he did seem to pay a lot of attention to the things around him in the room. He played with some toys, had some time on the floor, and spent a little time with Miss Rosie too. He took a bottle and had his diaper changed. He seemed very comfortable being there and didn't fuss much at all.
We are scheduled to return in two weeks to check things out again and leave Nate for a few hours so he can get used to his classroom and we can get used to leaving him.

The Pooper Bowl
February 2, 2009
Yesterday may have been the Super Bowl, but today was the Pooper Bowl!
Nate has had a particularly messy day today, and Jacqui has been on the receiving end of all of it. Just before leaving for work Jacqui changed Nate after he had an exploding diaper, and then within the first 15 minutes of her getting home she changed another exploding diaper that was worse than the first!
We decided that Nate needed a bath as soon as possible. Jacqui decided that she would give him a bath in the real tub with her today for something fun (since her only quality time with Nate so far today was chaning dirty diapers). Well, Jacqui got in the tub and as soon as Sharon handed Nate off to Jacqui, he pooped in the tub. Yuck!
Now Nate is finally clean, and the night is still young, so there is still time for another poop incident, but Jacqui is hoping to get some clean quality time with Nate later.

Nate's First Super Bowl
February 1, 2009
Today we went to Diane and Annette's house to watch the Super Bowl with them and some other friends, including Deb and Trish who are expecting a baby in July. (Yay! A friend for Nate!) Nate was a little bit of a distraction from the game for everyone, but he is so cute and the Pats weren't playing anyway so it was OK.
Nate slept a little while on Annette's mom when we first got there, but he was awake and moving almost the whole night. Diane had put a blanket down on the floor for Nate to play on, and it was near the TV. He wanted nothing to do with his toys and instead was fixated on the TV and watched a good bit of the game.
We ended up leaving before the game was over, and tried to listen to the rest of the game on the radio on the way home. Hopefully the Patriots will be playing in Nate's second Super Bowl next year. Now that the football season is over, Nate will be gearing up for Baseball's Spring Training! GO RED SOX! GO YANKEES!

On Our Own (Sort Of...)
January 31, 2009
Today, Sharon went out to run some errands so that Jacqui and Nate could have some time at home together. Jacqui wanted some time alone with Nate since she doesn't get to see him enough, and because she wants to feel more confident taking care of him on her own.
Jacqui and Nate did really well together and enjoyed each other's company, but....they weren't alone the whole time. Nana and Papa came over for a little while because they hadn't seen Nate lately. They had a nice visit with Nate. Papa gave Nate a bottle for the first time, and Nana changed a diaper. Nate had a very nice visit with his grandparents and even showed them some of his babbling. When he started to get cranky they decided to leave so Jacqui could put him down for a nap.
Jacqui was really happy with how the day with Nate went. They got some good quality time together, and when he napped she even got some cleaning and laundry done. They both did miss Sharon though, and they think she kinda missed them, too.

Mom's New Toy
January 30, 2009
We decided to buy ourselves a new toy with a little of the Christmas money from our parents, a Flip Video Camcorder. Our hope is to use it to catch more of Nate's extra cute moments on video and upload them here to the website. The Flip is supposed to be extremely user friendly and easily uploads to a computer hard drive or website (like this one) through the USB port. We're going to spend some time playing around with it this weekend, and hopefully there will be new clips in the Home Movies section before too long.

Nate's First Playdate
January 29, 2009
Nate went on his very first playdate today at Diane's house. It really happened just by coincidence because Diane was hosting Sharon & Nate, and Julie & Jackson for a visit on the same afternoon. Jackson and Nate are only about a week apart in age (Jackson was born on Nov. 5th), and it was funny to see just how similar, and how completely different they were.
The boys were both born at the same length and almost the same weight, but Jackson is definitely outpacing Nate now. He's a big boy! Nate is rolling over, Jackson's not quite there yet. Both boys have recently discovered their own hands and were clasping and playing with them throughout the afternoon. They also have both found their voice, but Jackson's is definitely louder and stronger than Nate's.
The boys had very limited interaction with each other. To be honest I'm not sure they even noticed each other much. They had a little face-to-face time, but they were on opposite schedules practically the whole afternoon. It seemed as though one was always sleeping while the other was awake. They did share a little time playing on the rug, and then sitting at the table while their moms ate lunch.
It was really nice to give Nate a little social interaction with another baby and to compare notes with another new mom. Hopefully we'll get the chance to do it again.

Mama's Favorite Time of Day
January 27, 2009
Mama Sharon loves spending all day with Nate, but she does have a very favorite time of day when she feels like Nate is at his very cutest.
It happens pretty much every morning. Jacqui usually wakes up with Nate and gives him his first bottle of the day. He usually falls back to sleep after and winds up back in his crib. After another hour or so of napping he wakes up and it's Mama Sharon's turn. Nate's usually squirming around all swaddled up, not crying but talking to himself. As soon as Sharon appears above the crib Nate immediately lights up and breaks into his huge smile beaming from ear to ear. What a way to start the day.

That Sweet Smell...
January 26, 2009
It's gone! Nate's baby smell is gone! We were warned this would happen, but I don't think we were quite ready for it. We're not exactly sure how or when his sweet smell vanished, but there doesn't seem to be any trace of it left. Instead, he smells like a combination of various Johnson & Johnson products and sour milk.

Speaking Whale
January 25, 2009
Nate's been babbling and cooing for a short while now, but his talking really seemed to spike over the weekend in White Plains. He was talking back and forth with everyone and really seems to like it, smiling the whole time. Right now he has a limited repertoire of sounds. His favorite seems to be "hoooo", kind of like an owl.
Nate will pretty much talk and babble to anyone, but his favorite conversation partner seems to be a whale wall hanging that's over his changing table. It doesn't matter how upset he is about his dirty diaper, as soon as he lays down on the changing pad and looks up to see his whale he is laughing, smiling and talking a mile a minute.

White Plains Weekend
January 23-25, 2009
We decided to bring Nathaniel down to visit White Plains for the weekend. It had been nearly a month since Grammy, Grampy, Mimi & Grandpa had seen Nathaniel and we all agreed it was time for another visit. He's getting so big, doing new things, and every month makes a huge difference.
We had a nice visit, although it did seem that Nate was a bit extra spit-uppy while we were there. He went through way too many bibs and burp clothes, not to mention several outfits. In fact, we all were on the receiving end of some cheesy spit-up at some point over the weekend.
While we were there, Nathaniel showed off some of his new hand tricks, watched some fishing on tv with Grampy, marveled at the swinging pendulum on the clock, and sat at the table with everyone for dinner. He even got to take a bath in Grammy's sink after an explosive diaper. He had some real quality time visiting with everyone, and taking turns napping in everyone's arms.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow
January 22, 2009
Before Nathaniel was born, the ultrasound techs had told us that they could see his hair flowing in the ultrasound images. So, it was no surprise when Nathaniel was born with quite a bit of hair. He usually sports a caesar style hair-do, and has on occassion been known to rock a faux-hawk.
Unfortunately though, Nathaniel has been cursed with baby balding and has developed a stripe-like bald spot on the back left side of his head. So now Nate has a new hair-do. It looks as though he's sporting a fade or maybe even a bowl-like haircut on half his head. On the plus side, Nate does seem to be growing some new hair elsewhere on his head, and he's finally getting some eyebrows.

He's All Hands...
January 21, 2009
Nathaniel seemed to have figured out the whole thumb sucking thing a little while ago. He was having moderate success opening up his hand and getting his thumb to stick out just enough to pop it in his mouth. But, over the last few days, Nathaniel has discovered his hands! He actually seems to have developed a new-found control over them and he's facinated. He's been bringing them up to his face to look at them, folding them (almost like he's praying), and wringing them together. He's even doing a better job holding onto his toys, touching and feeling the different parts and textures. It's incredibly cute to watch because he's having such a good time figuring it all out.

Inauguration Day
January 20, 2009
Sharon was super excited to watch all the Inauguration Day festivities, and insisted on sharing the occassion with Nate. They spent most of the day camped out in the living room watching the news coverage. Sharon took the opportunity to tell Nate all about what was happening, and had a mushy "you can be anything you want to be" moment. The whole thing was pretty incredible to see, and a terrific moment to share.
Overall, Nate was pretty oblivious to it all, but he did seem to notice some of the music during the parade. So, maybe he's destined to be in the marching band just like his Mama. If that's what he wants to be, that's fine with us.

Rub-a-Dub-Dub
January 19, 2009
As a special treat (for us and him), we've started giving Nathaniel some baths in the big tub. He really seems to enjoy being cuddled in the water, holding his squirty toys and splashing around. He seems comfortable in the water as long as Mama has a good grip on him. We were suprised to find that he's actually quite buoyant and floats fairly well on his back (with assistance of course). I guess we'll be signing up for some Mommy & Me swim classes before too long.

Frosty the Snowman
January 18, 2009
We had another snowy day at home, and since it was so cold, we decided against bringing Nate out to play in the snow again. Instead, when Jacqui came in from shoveling the driveway, she brought some snow to Nate. He got to hold a tiny snowball that Jacqui made him and even got his very own miniature snowman that has since taken up residence in our freezer.

A Visit from Rusty Putterson
January 17, 2009
Sharon & Jacqui's friend Jill made a trip to visit for the day. She had yet to meet Nathaniel, but finally had her chance. She held him for the first time and admitted that he was only the second baby she had ever held. When he started getting a little fussy (after only a minute or so) she was quick to say the word "word" and hand him back to Mama.
All in all we had a nice visit, and Nate actually seemed to like Jill a whole lot. He couldn't take his eyes off of her as she Wii Bowled, and made faces at her all through dinner. Jill also came bearing Christmas gifts, and Nate got a Baby's First Christmas ornament, and also a really soft and warm blanket that looks like a puppy. He'll enjoy plenty of time on the floor with that.

Happy 2 Month Birthday!
January 13, 2009
Nate had a jam packed day to celebrate turning 2 months old...
Nathaniel made his first trip to see Jacqui at work and visited with all of Jacqui's co-workers. After settling in and having a bottle, he was in a very good mood and was smiling and batting his eyes at everyone. Before leaving we made a trip to see the monkeys. Nate seemed to notice them jumping and climbing around, and the monkeys definitely noticed Nate. They came right up to the glass to take a good look at him. He'll have to make another trip when he's a little bit older and able to see them better. Jacqui hopes it isn't too long until they're back because it really made her day.
Back at home Nathaniel was being his usual active self. He learned a new trick while playing with his ball rattle on the floor and we were quite impressed. Apparently he's going to be a soccer player, because he's got great footwork. Check out the video in the Home Movies section.
Nathaniel just gets more entertaining as time goes on. He definitely recognizes his Mommies and loves playing with us. He has become so social, constantly smiling and cooing. He's learning something new practically everyday, and seems so much more aware. We can't wait to see what he'll do in his third month.

2 Month Check-Up
January 12, 2009
Nathaniel had his 2 month check-up today with the pediatrician. As usual he did super and got loads of attention from the staff at the office.
Nathaniel is continuing to grow by leaps and bounds, and we can hardly believe how big he's gotten. He measured in at 23 3/4 in. long landing him in the 75th percentile for height. It seems like he's going to dwarf his moms one day. He also got weighed and he's up to 11 lbs, 12 ounces, right at the 50th percentile.
Dr. Garnett checked his eyes, ears and listened to his chest and lungs. He got a glowing report and a clean bill of health. While he was there he also got two shots and one oral vaccine. He did pretty well with the shots and went home sporting purple dinosaur bandaids. He ended up with a slight fever from the immunizations, but otherwise is his happy, healthy self.

Auntie Brenda's Visit
January 11, 2009
Auntie Brenda just left after spending a weekend in Massachusetts with us to attend an athletic trainer's conference in Boston. She got here late Friday after registering for her conference, and was gone most of the day on Saturday for seminars and career workshops. It was a quick visit with us, but she did get to spend a little time with her nephew. They spent some time cuddling and she fed him some bottles. It was nice to see her, since we don't often have much time to talk with her. We wished that Auntie Lori and cousin Jessie could have made the trip too, but unfortunately this time they were stuck in NY with school and work.
We had other visiters too this weekend. Nana and Grandpa Bixby came by to visit with Nathaniel and help chop the ice in the driveway. And Diane and Annette stopped by for a visit Saturday afternoon, and we had Chinese food for dinner with them and Brenda. It has been a busy weekend that is going by too fast, and we are already looking forward to next weekend when we are supposed to see our friend Jill and it is a three-day weekend for Jacqui!

Napless in Auburn
January 9, 2009
Nathaniel has been doing terrific sleeping through the night. We never expected that we would be able to get a full night sleep before he was even two months old. But, since he is getting so much sleep at night, Nathaniel doesn't want to nap at all during the day. Some days he will take very short naps, but today he didn't nap at all. He was far to interested in playing with his toys and cuddling with his momma to even think about sleeping. Maybe he was afraid he would miss out on something, but he didn't. Instead, Momma missed out on lunch.

Hot Stove, Cool Music
January 8, 2009
Nathaniel has really been loving spending time in his highchair recently, so Sharon has taken to putting him in it in the kitchen as she cooks dinner. She cranks up the music from the IPOD, gives Nate one of his favorite rattles, and he wiggles and giggles in the highchair while Sharon sings and dances around preparing dinner.
When it's time to sit down and eat, he's been sitting between us at the table during dinner. He loves looking around at what's going. He spends the whole meal smiling and giggling and adding his cooing into the dinner conversations.

Bouncy Fun!
January 7, 2009
With the holidays finished and Jacqui back at work, Sharon has been working hard to get Nate back into routine. She tries very hard to structure his day and make sure he gets lots of stimulating things to do. Lately he seems to have a new favorite activity - his Rainforest Bouncy Seat that Nana & Grandpa Bixby bought him for Christmas. He loves listening to the music, watching the waterfall and making the animals bounce around. He's such a wiggly, active guy now that he can really get that thing moving when he wants to.

Nana's Adventures in Babysitting
January 6, 2009
Jacqui's mom had been saying to us for a while that if there was anything that we needed to do, she would gladly babysit for Nate. She was supposed to babysit for us back in December so that we could go to Sharon's work Christmas party, but we ended up not going to the party due to Jacqui being sick and the ice storm that left us without power. Well, tonight we finally took her up on her offer, and Nana finally got to babysit for Nathaniel.
We decided to use our night without Nate to go to BJ's and get some shopping done. We needed to stock up on some bulk items, and BJ's was one of the places we thought might be too hard to take the baby.
While we were shopping Nana and Nathaniel were busy playing in his bouncy chair and with his toys on the floor. She fed him bottle and changed him. Then he fell asleep in her arms while watching TV. When we called to check in they were doing great, and Nana was watching the Biggest Loser, so we extended our date to include a stop for ice cream and appetizers at Friendly's.
It was nice to get out, and to get stuff done, and we were glad that Nana and Nathaniel had such a good time. I'm sure she will be babysitting again soon when we use the gift cards we got from Merry and Evan for another date night.

Jacqui is back at work
January 5, 2009
Jacqui went back to work today after having nearly 2 weeks off for Christmas break. She was very disappointed to be going back to work, and the first day seemed really long. She spent all day thinking about Sharon and Nate and wondering what they are up to at home. She is looking forward to next week though, as Sharon has promised to bring Nate to visit her at work one day. He hasn't come to visit yet and Jacqui is looking forward to their upcoming visit.

Bixby Family Christmas
January 1, 2009
We finally all got together with Jacqui's family to celebrate Christmas today. We went to Jacqui's parents to celebrate with them, Nana Bixby and Merry and Evan. We had a really nice day with everyone. We all had a nice time opening presents and having lunch and dessert.
Nate got great stuff including a book and a cute outfit from Auntie Merry and Uncle Evan, and a rainforest bouncy chair from Nana and Grandpa. We got lots of wonderful gifts, too. The best present though was our gift from Merry and Evan. They gave us gift certificates to the Outback and movie theater, for dinner and a movie along with free babysitting to be provided by Nana. We can't wait to get use them. We may even spread it out into two dates, dinner one night and movie another. Thanks guys!

Happy New Year!
January 1, 2009
Happy New Year! Welcome to our second calendar year with Nate!
We spent our New Year's Eve in front of the TV switching between Dick Clark's Rockin' Eve and CNN's coverage with Anderson Cooper. Unfortunately we didn't quite make it until midnight. We both remember seeing 11:49pm and saying that we were almost there. The next thing we knew Sharon was jolted awake by a text message alert on her phone from Lori and it was 12:01am. We just missed the ball dropping in Times Square. Luckily we now have DVR and were able to rewind the TV and watch the celebration on about a 5 minute delay!
We are so excited to be starting the year with Nate. 2008 was a great year for us, although we lost some loved ones, we got our most wonderful gift. Here's to a happy and healthy 2009! Happy New Year!

Updates Galore!
December 31, 2008
With both Mommies home for the holiday week, it's been a little easier caring for Nate and getting things done around the house. In fact, we even found time to get a lot of work done on the website. Check out the newly updated Photo Albums and Home Movies sections.

A Visit from Nana, Grandpa and Auntie Merry
December 30, 2008
Nana called the other day and told us that she couldn't wait to see Nate until Thrusday when we were going to celebrate Christmas together. She had to come see Nate sooner. So Nana, Grandpa and Auntie Merry all came over to visit today around lunchtime. We ordered a pizza and Nana and Auntie Merry played with Nathaniel, while Grandpa cut up the branches in the backyard that had fallen during the ice storm. After lunch we all played with Nathaniel a little more before our company had to leave. Nate was sad to see them go, but we will see them on New Year's Day for our Christmas celebration.

Out and About with Momma Bee
December 29, 2008
Jacqui realized that she hadn't taken Nate out of the house by herself yet, and decided that she would take him out on the errands that she had to run. This also allowed Sharon some time alone at home, which she hasn't had yet.
First Nate and Jacqui went to Target to get some stuff that was on sale this week. Nate had already been to Target a few times. This time he was awake the whole time, but he was very content and stared at Jacqui the whole time. He was very entertained by the Playstation demo that was running in the electronics section. Looks like we have a video gamer in our future.
Then they made Nate's first ever trip to the supermarket. Again, he did very well while Jacqui went up and down all the aisles. He got a little fussy right at the end in the check out line when he needed a diaper change, but he quickly calmed down and they decided to just come home to change it since they were only a few minutes away.
Nate and Jacqui had a really nice outing, and Jacqui is looking forward to many more outings just the two of them. Sharon also enjoyed her time alone. She was able to get some laundry done uninterupted and she got to upload all of the photos we took of Christmas.

Heading Home
December 28, 2008
After a really nice holiday visit at Grammy and Grampy's it was time to head home. We wanted to get back to see Jacqui's family, and Nate really needed to get back into his own space and back into his routine. We loaded the car with as much of Nate's new stuff as we could fit, and we actually had to leave some behind since he was spoiled with so many presents. It was hard to leave, but it was certainly harder for Grammy to watch us go. We'll have to plan another trip down before too long.

New Toys
December 27, 2008
Nathaniel had a lot of playtime with his new toys today. We laid him out on the floor on his blanket and surrounded him with a pile of his new toys. Jessie got down on the floor to join him, and they had a great time together. Nate seemed pretty interested in the toys and even grabbed and held on to some for the first time. It was pretty neat watching him shake his rattle and keys without any help. He also really liked his new mirror. He's been paying particular attention to his reflection lately and Jacqui has named his mirror image playmate "Etan" -- "Nate" backwards.

Christmas Visitors
December 26, 2008
The Christmas festivities continued for us on Friday with lots of visitors stopping by Grammy's house. Monique traveled down from Vermont to join in family Christmas, and she brought Savannah and Georgia along with her. Teresa stopped by with her dog Buster too. Sharon was happy to expose Nate to so many dogs. Hopefully he'll have his own dog in a few years, if Sharon gets her way. Nathaniel got to meet Sharon's friend Melanie for the first time too. We got a surprise visit from Diana who had missed our baby shower. It was so nice to see her and we were glad that she got a chance to meet Nate.

Nathaniel's First Christmas
December 25, 2008
Nathaniel woke up in a great mood on Christmas morning, and so did his mommies since he let us sleep until 7:15. We got him dressed in his 1st Christmas pajamas (since we feared they wouldn't stay clean overnight), and headed downstairs to wait for everyone else to wake up.
When we finally made it into the living room with the Christmas tree we were absolutely shocked by how many presents Santa had left. Jacqui helped Nathaniel with his stocking. Santa left him a few small toys, a hat & mittens, new pacifiers and a "My First Christmas" onesie.
After digging through the stocking, we started on the gifts under the tree. Nathaniel had a ridiculous number of presents (mostly thanks to Aunt Lori), and we really enjoyed opening them all for him knowing that next year he'll be tearing up his own packages. He got some a few baby's first Christmas ornaments, cute new outfits, his first pair of sneakers, books, and lots of toys. He even got a custom painted stool that matches his nursery decor (an incredibly thoughtful gift from Laura, Douglas, Dee & Peter). Everyone was so generous.
The rest of the day was very low-key, especially compared to Christmas Eve. Mimi & Grandpa spent the day with us and we all enjoyed sitting around with Nate, watching him play with some of his new toys, and enjoying some of our new toys and games too.

Christmas Eve
December 24, 2008
We were so excited for Nathaniel to get to experience his first big family holiday with Sharon's side of the family. Sharon's family always does a traditional Italian Christmas Eve dinner with the whole extended family invited. The last few years Grammy has hosted the dinner at her house, and this year she did again.
All of the Belmont family was there, and it was the first time many of them had met Nathaniel. Nate hung in there for quite a while being passed from relative to relative (even Cousin Peter took a turn - we were so proud of him). He didn't seem to mind all the unfamiliar faces, although we're not sure he liked Douglas rubbing his beard on his face.
Nate nearly crashed right before dinner and we attempted to put him down for a quick nap while we ate. No luck though, and we switched off for baby duty between courses. Not too big a deal since neither Jacqui or Sharon eat all those traditional Italian fish dishes. We brought Nate back down after a little while and he finally ended up getting comfy and falling asleep in Dana's arms.
The rest of the night went well and Nathaniel stayed pretty mellow despite all the overstimulation of people, noise and change in routine. After company left Nate hung his stocking on the fireplace, and Jessie read him a bedtime story - "'Twas the Night Before Christmas".

Holiday Travel
December 23, 2008
We will be spending the Christmas holiday in White Plains with Grammy and Grampy. We decided to head down early in hopes of getting ourselves and Nate settled in a bit before the big Christmas Eve dinner at Grammy's house with the whole family.
Aunt Lori, Aunt Brenda and Jessie were already there when we got in. We thought we'd have some extra hands to help carry in all the presents and bags, but we were wrong. Everyone was much more interested in fighting over Nate. Grampy helped us lug everything in though. We don't travel so light now that we have Nate (and all his stuff) in tow.
Lori and Brenda couldn't believe how much Nate had grown since they last saw him after Thanksgiving. We all had a great time passing him around and watching him play on his new Yankees blanket that Aunt Pam made him.

Bedtime Routine
December 22, 2008
Sharon is all about routines (maybe it's the OCD in her), and has been determined to get Nathaniel into good patterns and routines as well. So, over the last several nights, we have been trying out a new bedtime routine for our little guy.
We've been trying to give him a little quiet playtime in his room, followed by a little washing up. Then a diaper change, baby massage (with great smelling lotion) and pajama time. Next we snuggle into bed for a last feeding and bedtime stories until he (hopefully) drifts off to sleep.
We're still working out the kinks and trying to figure out the optimum timing of it all, but so far so good. The last couple of nights he's been asleep before 11:00, and staying asleep until 5:00ish. Needless to say we're happy with that.

Dinner Party
December 20, 2008
Nathaniel attended his very first dinner party today over at Diane and Annette's house. It was the first of what we hope will be many trips there, but this time there was no football involved, just a nice dinner with friends.
Bean was relatively well mannered with only a few crying fits for food and diaper changes throughout the evening. He gladly participated in several rounds of "pass the baby," and he got particularly snuggly with Trish who is working on cooking him up a friend. He cuddled right up near her belly, and hopefully shared some encouraging words. He even sat well through dinner (fascinated by the light fixture) so we could all enjoy.
It was so nice to have a night out with friends. We really enjoyed ourselves and hope that we can all get together again sometime soon.

Snow Day
December 19, 2008
We got hit with a big snow storm today that ended up dumping about 8 inches of the white stuff on us. It was Nathaniel's first real snow storm, and we thought it would be fun to take him outside for just a little bit and let him experience snow for the first time.
We bundled the Bean up in his coat, hat and mittens and went out on the porch so he could feel the cold air and see the flakes falling. He didn't seem to mind it so much, so we ventured out into the yard. He was looking up at the sky and the snowflakes were sticking to his eyelashes (all of a sudden he has enough that snowflakes would stick). He even opened up his mouth and caught snowflakes on his tongue (ok, so it was just a coincidence).
He didn't last too long out in the cold, and when he had enough we brought him back into the warm house. It was a lot of fun though, and we can't wait until next winter when he'll be big enouigh to be tottling around out there.

Christmas Lights
December 18, 2008
Tonight we took Nathaniel out hunting for Christmas lights, something Sharon and Jacqui have always enjoyed doing. We ventured all the way out to Millis, MA for a house completely decked out with lights, figurines and window boxes (this house is so well done it has been featured on the Today Show in the past). Of course Nate slept through practically the whole trip, but he probably wouldn't have been able to see much from his rear-facing car seat in the back anyway. Sharon and Jacqui thought it was a great night out, and a tradition they would like to continue with Nathaniel every year.

A Visit to Crossroads
December 17, 2008
Since Sharon missed the Crossroads School holiday party last Friday (that darn ice storm), she decided to make an trip into school with Nate so she could catch up with all her work friends. Sharon and Nate arrived just as the students were leaving, and they ran into Dougie (one of Sharon's students) on the way out to the bus. Dougie seemed to care less about Sharon or Nate, but was pretty interested in Nate's monkey toy.
After the students were gone, Sharon and Nate got some visiting time with the Classroom 4 teaching staff, and some of the other Crossroads staff too. Ms. Allison even made an announcement that Sharon and Nate were in the building, and before too long their was a whole crowd of people just standing around staring at Nate as he slept in his car seat. He slept through most of his visit (including the whole time Mr. Greg held him), but he did wake up enough to give Miss Kristin a smile, and to mess a diaper for Ms. Allison.
It was great to see everyone back at school and hear about how things were going. Although as much as she misses everyone, she's in no hurry to get back to work. Spending all day with Nate is just too much fun (and not nearly as dangerous).

One Month Check-up
December 16, 2008
Nathaniel went back to Dr. Garnett's office today for his one month check-up. While we were waiting to be called, we met another baby named Nathaniel. Our Nathaniel was much cuter though (even the nurse said so). In fact, the nurse thought that Bean really looked liked a Nathaniel, and the name suited him perfectly. We agree.
Nate did great at his appointment. He got weighed in, and he's plumped up to 9 pounds, 12 ounces (Mama Sharon's weight at birth). He's really filling out, and the doctor was quite pleased. She listened to his chest, checked his reflexes and gave him a good once over and everything checked out well. He didn't cry at all until it was time for his Hepatitis shot. A little wailing right when it happened, but he settled down really quickly after being scooped up and kissed by Mama Sharon.

Four Generation Visit
December 14, 2008
Nathaniel finally got to meet Mimi and Grandpa thanks to our unexpected White Plains trip. We made a trip to their house and Grammy came along too. That made for a very special visit with four generations of family in the room.
It was such a sweet moment to see Mimi get all excited and giggly when she first saw Nathaniel. She couldn't get him out of his car seat fast enough. Grandpa couldn't stop smiling and commenting about how strong a grip Nate had (finally the boy he's been waiting for). We was calling him "shortstop" the whole time. Too cute. I don't know who was happier with the visit. Mimi and Grandpa were both pretty ecstatic to finally meet their great-grandson, Sharon was thrilled to show off Nate, and Nate was on some of his very best behavior. A good time was had by all.

One Month Old
December 13, 2008
It's hard to believe that we've been blessed by Nathaniel's presence for a whole month already. Time is flying! He's growing so fast and has changed so much since those first few days at the hospital.
Nate has really impressed and amazed us with his physical strength, and entertained us with his vast repertoire of funny facial expressions. We're so thankful that he's such a happy and mellow baby, not to mention such an overachiever (not that we're biased or anything). He's more and more himself every day, and we fall more in love with him.
We're so excited to see what this next month has in store for us all. We're sure he'll keep us laughing, smiling and exhausted.

An Impromptu Trip
December 12, 2008
With the power and heat still out and the temperature dropping, we decided it was time to hit the road and find somewhere warm to spend the weekend. It's one thing for us to be cold and bored in the dark, it's another thing to make Nathaniel miserable.
Luckily, Grammy and Grampy were more than happy to take us in for the weekend, and we ended up making our first trip to White Plains. Nate did terrific in the car. He slept the whole way down and didn't need to stop at all.
Nathaniel woke up when we got to the house and Grampy got to see him all bright eyed for a change. Grammy was spending the night at Mimi and Grandpa's house, so Nathaniel and Grampy got some uninterrupted male bonding time.

Lights Out
December 12, 2008
Thanks to the nasty wind and ice storm that hit the North East overnight, we lost power. We're not exactly sure when it happened; the power was still on when Sharon and Nate finally made it to bed at 1:00am, but it was lights out when he woke up at 5:00am. As a result, Sharon got the fun of changing and feeding Nate by flashlight. Good thing the flashlight was still under the bed since our last game of Flashlight Tag.

Mommy's Sick Day
December 11, 2008
Last night and all day today Jacqui has been really sick. It seemed to come out of nowhere, and she hasn't been able to keep any food down. She feels worse than she has in years.
Jacqui is nervous about Sharon and Nate catching whatever it is that she has so she has been keeping her distance. It has been really hard for her to not be holding and kissing Nate. She can't wait to feel better so she can cuddle up with him again and take some of the burden off of Sharon.

Smiley Face
December 10, 2008
Nathaniel gave Sharon his first genuine smile while they were curled up and snuggling in bed tonight. Bean has smiled before, but we always suspected that it was a coincidence (or gas related). This was the real deal, and it was so cute. Unfortunately it only lasted a few moments and the camera wasn't nearby, so you'll have to wait for a picture. He's a happy guy though, so you shouldn't have to wait too long.

An Off Day
December 9, 2008
Bean didn't seem quite himself today. He must have woken up on the wrong side of the bassinett, because he was in a really fussy mood all day. He wasn't at all interested in playtime, or tummy time, or even storytime. Nothing seemed to hold his attention. He was out of his usual sleep pattern, and he just wasn't his mellow self. Not even a visit from Nana seemed to snap him out of it. (although he was awake during her visit this time). Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.

Spit Happens
December 8, 2008
Nathaniel seems to have a bit of a spit-up problem. The poor boy practically lives in a bib, because he just can't seem to keep his shirt clean without one. In fact, not only does he make a mess of himself, but he's hit the couch, throw pillows, blankets, his bed, our bed, his playmat, his toys and most notably... Jacqui (a lot). He actually seems to target Jacqui with his spit-up episodes. All she has to do is pick him up, or look at him the wrong way and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, he's spitting up big time.

|
Play Time
December 7, 2008
We've been making a point of giving Nate a lot of tummy time on his Rainforest playmat lately. He really seems to enjoy looking at all the toys, batting at things and squirming around. He's pretty strong, and holds his head up to look at himself in the mirror.
While we were playing today, Nate did something completely new and different. He rolled over all by himself! We had put him on his tummy, and he must have had enough of that because he rolled himself right back over to his back. We couldn't believe it since babies don't typically hit that milestone until 2 or 3 months. We were so shocked that we made him do it again to be sure it wasn't just a fluke. He ended up doing it three times before he tuckered himself out. Luckily we caught the last attempt on video and you can see it on our new Home Videos page. Check it out.

Family Dinner
December 6, 2008
Nathaniel got to meet another one of his relatives today, his Great Aunt Donna. Aunt Donna was visiting for the weekend from Virginia and she put in a special request to see Nate on her trip. We were more than happy to oblige. We gave him a bath (which he still hates), and got him all dressed up in a collared shirt and his owl sweater that Aunt Donna knitted for him. He looked so preppy.
We went to Nana and Grandpa Bixby's for dinner and like always, Nate spent most of his time snoozing. It was only when we sat down to eat that he decided to wake up. He did get to join us at the table though, trying out Nana's new high chair.

Silent Night
November 5, 2008
So, we don't know exactly what constitutes "sleeping through the night" for a newborn, but we think we're doing pretty well. Typically, Nathaniel is a night owl like Sharon. Sharon has been staying up with him until 12:00 or 1:00 before they both finally settle in for the night. Nate usually wakes up once in the middle of the night (Jacqui's shift) and then lets us sleep until almost 7:00. Not bad. In fact we were feeling pretty lucky.
Last night, Nate made it to bed with Sharon at 12:45. He had a quiet night, and we could hardly believe it when we were up before him this morning and noticed the time on the alarm clocks -- 6:10am. No middle of the night diaper change or feeding. We were in total shock. Now, we're not expecting him to make a habit of it or anything (we were probably just really lucky), but it was really nice to sleep the whole night through. Thanks Nate, your Mommies really appreciate it.

Back to Work
December 4, 2008
Today was the day that Jacqui had been dreading.... she had to go back to work today. She packed her lunch and picked out her clothes the night before so that she would have a few extra minutes with Sharon and Nate before she left. It was hard for Jacqui to get through the day at work, and she had to call Sharon at home several times to check in on them. She did find a few other things that seemed to help: telling everyone at work all about Nate, putting a photo of Nate as her wallpaper on her computer, and getting a picture message of Nate on her phone from Sharon. Also, it helped that it was a short day at work for their holiday party and she got to leave a little early. As awful as it is to be back at work, it is a wonderful feeling to walk in the door and come home to your wife and baby boy.

Shopping Adventure
December 3, 2008
Today we decided to venture out just the three of us to try to run some errands and do a little more Christmas shopping before Jacqui heads back to work. We packed everything up again and took off for the shopping plaza with Nate in tow. We stretched the trip to about 3 1/2 hours (longer than we anticipated) with only 1 bottle feeding and 2 diaper changes all performed in the car.
Nate really seemed to enjoy being out and about. He slept for part of our trip, but seemed to wake up when we hit the Carter's store. Maybe it was those other babies crying, or maybe he just wanted to add in his opinion as we shopped for his Christmas outfit. He got a lot of attention from shoppers and store employees wherever we went. Mostly compliments on his head of hair. We had a good time out and about as a family and we actually accomplished some of what we set out to do. Not too bad.

Back On Our Own
December 2, 2008
With our houseguests gone and Jacqui's time at home running short (she'll go back to work on Thursday), we decided to have another day at home just the three of us.
We spent a lot of time playing with Nate's toys and making funny faces for him to mimic. He's getting pretty good when he's not too tired and seems to particularly like Sharon's monkey face and noises.

Future Babysitter Extraordinaire
December 1, 2008
With her visit quickly coming to a close, Jessie wanted to pack in as much as she could. She woke up early, picked out an outfit for Nathaniel to wear and dressed him for the day.
Next she got comfy on the floor of the nursery with him and had a good playtime session with Nate and Aunt Jacqui. It was the first time Nathaniel was able to hold on to any of the link toys by himself, and he even was able to focus on the rattles that Jessie held for him.
Nathaniel was tired out after his play session and he had to go down for a nap. Jessie took the time to help out with a few chores around the house for us. She helped Aunt Sharon prepare pancake breakfast for everyone and washed bottles with Aunt Jacqui. She was a great help and we just know that she'll be a terrific babysitter for Nathaniel in a few years.

Stepping Out
November 30, 2008
With all the extra hands around to help out, we decided it might be a good time to venture out of the house for a little outing with Nathaniel. He's been out for his doctor appointments, and he made the trip to Nana and Grandpa Bixby's for Thanksgiving, but that's about it.
We packed up the diaper bag, and the stroller and then the six of us loaded into two cars (we can't all fit in one anymore). We car caravanned over to The Whiz, a really cool toy store a few towns over. Nate did great in the car, but immediately needed a diaper change as we pulled into the parking lot. Sharon did the honors in the back seat with her butt hanging out of the car in the rain. We wandered the store for awhile trying to get some Christmas shopping done and Nate just rolled around with us in his stroller happy and content.
When we were done shopping we decided to head over to Friendly's for lunch (a real treat for the Buffalonians since they don't have a Friendly's near them). We expected Nathaniel to be due for a diaper change and a bottle, and were anticipating that he would end up as that fussy baby in the restaurant. As it turned out, we were pleasantly surprised yet again. He napped and sat quietly in his car seat in the booth with us the whole time and let us enjoy a meal out (complete with ice cream dessert). Thanks Nate!

Family Game Day
November 29, 2008
It wouldn't be a visit with Lori, Brenda and Jessie if there wasn't some serious gaming going on. It's just what we do when we're all together. Today was no different. Nate cooperated and napped enough that we could squeeze in several games of Bananagrams (one of our new favorite obscure games). Diane and Annette came by to hang out for a bit too, and they joined in on the gaming action. In fact, Annette ran the table for several rounds.
Jacqui had her 10 year high school reunion at night, and she decided to go for a bit to brag about her "new mom" status. Sharon stayed behind with Nathaniel and they teamed up for a game of Killer Bunnies with Aunt Lori, Aunt Brenda and Jessie. Nate didn't win, but he did prove a valuable teammate when a card came up benefitting the newest player at the table. Bonus!

3...2...1... Aunt Lori!
November 28, 2008
After counting down the seconds until Aunt Lori's visit, the magical moment arrived. In fact, Aunt Lori beat the countdown clock and actually made it here to Auburn early. I guess she was pretty motivated.
Aunt Lori, Aunt Brenda and Cousin Jessie got their first glimpse of Nathaniel, and like everyone else quickly scooped him up. Aunt Lori had the honor first, and even jumped at the opportunity to change his first messy diaper of her visit. Brenda of course looked like a pro with Nate and was happy to help and share her baby tips.
Jessie did a great job holding Nathaniel and getting him to fall asleep in her arms (apparently he likes being pet like a dog on the top of his head). Jessie even read him a bedtime story before she went to bed. Nathaniel went to bed much later.

|
Cordless
November 28, 2008
Nathaniel finally lost his dried up umbilical cord in the middle of the night. Jacqui noticed during a late night (or should I say early morning) diaper change and put it aside for the morning. It briefly went missing, but we found it again so we could take one last look at that shriveled up raisin of a cord before throwing it away. We're sentimental and all, but not sentimental enough to keep it. Besides, we'd much rather look at Nate's actual belly button.

First Thanksgiving
November 27, 2008
Today Nathaniel celebrated his first Thanksgiving (one of Mama Jacqui's very favorite holidays). We got up early to watch the Macy's Parade, but Nate was pretty uninterested. He didn't even open his eyes to see Santa when Jacqui held him up by the TV screen.
Nate got dressed in his Thanksgiving outfit (complete with turkey bib) and went to Nana and Grandpa Bixby's house for Thanksgiving dinner. He got to meet Great Nana Bixby for the first time, and saw Aunt Merry and Uncle Evan again. He slept through all of dinner, but woke up just in time to interrupt Mama Sharon's dessert.

And Nathaniel Makes Three...
November 26, 2008
We had a great day at home as our family of three. Nathaniel was awake for a good part of the afternoon and we enjoyed spending some awake and alert time with him. As the night wound down Jacqui settled into bed with Nate and read him a quick bedtime story, "And Tango Makes Three."

Nathaniel's Check-Up
November 25, 2008
Nathaniel went back to the pediatrician's office today for his 2 week check-up. Granted, he isn't quite that old yet, but it might be tough to get an appointment on Thanksgiving Day.
Nate got weighed first thing and we were happy to see he had plumped up to 8 pounds, 2 ounces. He gained 11 ounces since his visit last week. It seems like his feeding has greatly improved. The nurse also measured his length, and he grew to 22 inches. We were so proud of our growing baby boy.
When Dr. Garnett saw Nathaniel she immediately commented that his color was better. He didn't look as jaundiced and we were relieved to hear it. She checked out his umbilical cord and his circumcision site and everything looked really good. He is definitely on the mend.

Bye-Bye Grammy and Grampy
November 24, 2008
After a nice visit with Grammy and Grampy this past week, we all piled into the car first thing this morning to drop them off at the train station. They both squished in the backseat with Nathaniel so they could get in as many glimpses as they could before heading off. It was hard to say good-bye, but we'll see them again for Christmas, if not sooner.
We came straight home after our trip to the train station. Nate slept the whole way in the car, but woke up soon after coming into the house. He ate and then was wide awake for over an hour. Quite unusual for our little sleepyhead. We enjoyed every minute of it, watching him looking out the window, staring at our faces and checking out the ceiling fans (which makes Sharon a little nervous).
When Nate finally drifted off to sleep for an afternoon nap, us Mommies came to the realization that with Grammy and Grampy gone it was time to get back into the routine of washing our own bottles, doing our own laundry and fixing our own meals. Bummer. Well, it was nice while it lasted.

Go Pats!
November 23, 2008
Sunday is football day and we all settled in to watch the Pats game at 1:00pm. It technically wasn't Nathaniel's first game since the Pats played Thursday the 13th, but we were all a little more with it for this game.
We got Nate all dressed up in his football gear complete with his Patriots bib (a gift from Diane and Annette) and his football rattle (a gift from Annette's mom). Nate curled up on the couch with us, and with Grampy and Nemo for a little male bonding during the game. He didn't stay awake to watch the Pats win, but it sure was fun watching together.

Grampy Is Our Hero!
November 22, 2008
Grampy had a very busy day on Saturday. He made everyone his famous dippy eggs for breakfast and then went out shopping with Jacqui to pick up all the supplies he needed to hang up some Christmas lights for us. He spent the afternoon out in the cold on the porch hanging up icicle lights that really look great.
Diane and Annette came over for another visit, and yet again restocked our fridge with even more food. They even brought us brownies that were still warm. Yummy.

A Lazy Friday
November 21, 2008
We had a low key kind of day since Sharon was still recovering from her hospital visit. Nathaniel spent a lot of time cuddling and posing for pictures in his dinosaur outfit.
Nana and Grandpa Bixby treated us all to Chinese food for dinner and the seven of us spent a quiet night here at the house.

A Trip Back to the Hospital
November 20-21, 2008
Sharon hadn't been feeling so well Wednesday night, and was waking up with chills and sweats throughout the night. She felt a bit better Thursday morning, but was ready for a nap come the afternoon. When Jacqui came up to check on her she was burning up and had a temperature of 100.5. Too high for a post-partum mom. Jacqui called the doctor, and before we heard back from the office, Sharon's temperature had spiked to 102. Sharon's temperature didn't come down quickly enough even after some Tylenol, so we listened to the doctor and headed to the emergency room.
At the hospital Sharon got pumped full of IV fluids, had even more blood drawn, and napped while waiting to see an actual doctor. When the doctor did see her, he diagnosed her with Mastitis and gave her some IV antibiotics and a prescription for some more. While she waits for the infection to clear up, she has to keep pumping but throw the milk away. Nathaniel will be stuck with formula for a while.
Luckily Grammy and Grampy were staying with us, and gladly watched Nathaniel for the eight hours that we were at the hospital. The three of them had a nice night together and Grampy even took some pictures so we would know what we had missed. We were disappointed to have to leave Nathaniel so soon, but at least he had some great babysitters to take care of him.

Great Aunt Monique's Visit
November 20, 2008
Great Aunt Monique made a special trip all the way from Vermont to visit Nathaniel. Sadly, she made it all the way here, before Mommies and Nathaniel made it downstairs (morning routines can take a long time now).
Monique is convinced that Nathaniel is the cutest baby she's ever seen, and thought he really looked a lot like Sharon. She held him for quite a while until we put him in his swing so we could eat lunch. Monique had brought a ton of food from Whole Foods, and all paper and plastic utensils. We really enjoyed the meal, and the easy clean-up. Good thinking Aunt Monique!
Our visit was short, but she's planning on making another trip in early December. We can't wait.

Four Doting Grandparents
November 19, 2008
We all spent much of the day waiting around in between naps for Nathaniel to wake up (Grammy just wanted to pinch him). Jacqui and Grammy made a trip out to the store to stock up on some extra bottles and baby gear, and Grampy did some odd jobs around the house. He even mowed the lawn and raked leaves one last time so Jacqui wouldn't have to.
Later in the evening Nana and Grandpa Bixby came over to visit too and we all sat around in the living room just staring at Nathaniel sleeping. One of these days Nana will see him awake.

Grammy & Grampy's Arrival
November 18, 2008
Sharon's parents couldn't wait to come up and see their grandson Nathaniel. They took the train up from White Plains and were scheduled to arrive into Worcester on Tuesday night.
We spent the day fixing up the house a little while Nathaniel napped. We even gave him his first sponge bath so he would be all fresh and clean when he met his grandparents.
